Pittsburgh’s First Winter Bike To Work Day Was a Blast

Pittsburgh’s First Winter Bike to Work Day Was a Blast (…of Cold Air)!

If I had a nickel for every time I’d encouraged friends, colleagues and total strangers to ride to work in the cold, I’d have exactly one nickel. As a general rule I don’t bike in temperatures below 20 degrees, but I was willing to break that rule in for little bit of adventure and a lot of free hot chocolate.

Last week I joined dozens of Pittsburghers to participating in some frigid fun — BikePGH’s first Winter Bike to Work Day. Held on Friday, March 6th, people from across the area rode to one of our eight participating coffeeshops to grab a free hot coffee or other hot drink. And it was so cold.

In our defense, we were really hoping for a much warmer morning. The event was originally planned for February 27th, the final Friday of what turned out to be Pittsburgh’s second coldest February on record. We moved the event in hopes of getting better weather, but that didn’t happen.

A huge thanks to our participating coffeeshops: Crazy Mocha, Marty’s Market, Commonplace Coffee, Local Press, Voluto, Constellation Coffee, and Simpatico Espresso.

VIEW THE PHOTOS. Can’t wait for next year’s Winter Bike to Work Day.
