“People’s History” also cites Bike Pittsburgh’s advocacy work

Another day, another accolade for biking and sustainable transportation in Pittsburgh, this time from the New York-based transportation philanthropy TransitCenter.

The organization’s recently released “A People’s History of Recent Urban Transportation Innovation” seeks to understand the recent surge of bus and bike lanes, pedestrian plazas, bike share systems, and other people-first transportation solutions in American cities. It compares stories from a shortlist of cities, including Pittsburgh, in order to identify the common factors behind their successes.

The recipe for innovation includes a combination of factors: the vision and management skills of municipal leaders, the transforming practices of city staff, and, above all, civic advocates driving public engagement on transportation issues.

The study puts Bike Pittsburgh front and center in the city’s adoption of a progressive transportation vision, embodying new alliances between local civic organizations and city leadership. Bike Pittsburgh’s successful campaigns for new bike infrastructure are cited as “one facet of the city’s developing sustainable transportation agenda” that includes “public spaces, placemaking … and street-reclamation projects.”
