Petition calls for safety improvements between Coraopolis and Monaca

PA Route 51 serves as an important cycling connection between Pittsburgh and communities in western Allegheny County, Beaver County, and beyond. While it is part of the state-designated Bike Route A, high-speed car traffic and narrow shoulders pose serious threats to cyclists; PA 51 has been the site of three biking fatalities in the last 25 months.

Ohio River Trail Council has launched a petition asking Gov. Wolf and the state Pedalcycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee to consider safety improvements on PA 51 between Coraopolis and Monaca. The suggested changes include lowering speed limits for car traffic and adding additional “share the road” markings and signage.

ORTC is also asking the state to expedite funding for the Ohio River Trail Project, which would establish a parallel bikeway along the Ohio and provide an alternative route along this dangerous corridor.

Consider signing the petition and supporting much-needed protections for cyclists in this area.
