Here’s some more inspiration from Portland’s Pedal Palooza. Last year we had 80 events. Can we break it this year? So far 10 events have been submitted and it’s June 13th. BikeFest starts in about two months. Get the best dates by getting your events in now.

Pool Ride will return this year! I have way more time to plan it also, and will top a thread when I am internetting a little more.

I think Try-A-Bike will be Saturday Aug 24th this year.

Scott,

Did someone submitted this event from PMTCC?

Just throwing this out there: A “violas and cellos” ride. What do violas and cellos have? G strings and C strings. This would be as close to a naked ride as I think we dare try in Pittsburgh.

G-strings are tiny. C-strings are tinier still. They barely cover the essentials. I recommend doing your Internet searching *not* at work.

But hey, any swimsuit would do. I just don’t plan on visiting a pool.

How about it?

Hey Mikhail, not sure. Mike on my staff is in charge of the calendar of events.

I have been kicking around the idea of doing a bike/swim/bike along the Allegheny, getting in near Millvale — I have a place in mind, but I have only swam past it, I need to figure out how to ride to it.

However this ride stands a good chance of being cancelled if it rains either the day before or the day of, due to river conditions.

How big of a problem is that? Should I plan a “rain date” or just scrap it if it’s a no-go? Or is it best not to try for something with such an uncertain probability of success?

Hi Sarah,
Great idea. You could just put in the description of the event (“Rain x days prior and/or day of cancels due to CSO concerns”). I think even 2-3 days prior is potentially problematic.

cool, I just need some good weather to scout this plan out and then I will submit. I need to be able to walk into the river @ where I am thinking to launch the group to make sure the riverbed isn’t covered in broken bottles and crap. Hopefully we will get a break from this rain soon.

Sarah_q!

I’m in!

And while you’re checking for glass, maybe keep an eye out for poison ivy?

What do you guys think about a light up ride? Do you think doing it directly after the bikefest party would be good or on a different night?

^ A light up, night ride would be great. If someone does lead this, I’ll likely join in. I’m torn on the timing – after the party could be great fun, but more dangerous considering the typical condition of post-party riders.

that was my thought, dan. I don’t want to be responsible for people who may hurt themselves, though i don’t recall any injuries post-party ride in the past. I will probably do it on a different day.

I scheduled it for the 10th. I don’t like the idea of drunken bicycle crashes.

I am really excited about Bikefest, as always! It is such a wonderful collection of informative and enjoyable events.

I just wanted to share one aspect of it that I find highly useful: the Google Calendar feed listing all the events, available at http://bikepgh.org/campaigns/bikefest/ . I’ve imported it into my own calendar page, so I can easily see when the events are and easily copy them over to my personal calendar and not miss anything.

Also, for those of us still contemplating organizing some event and looking for inspiration, it looks like the Portland website has redirected to this year’s (as yet incomplete) calendar, but the archives are available at http://www.shift2bikes.org/cal/viewpp2012.php and this year’s is at http://www.shift2bikes.org/cal/viewpp2013.php .

the moonlight ride entry currently says:

Ending at Eat n Park in Squirrel Hill, and there’ll be a group heading back into Lawrenceville from there

Ending at Ritter’s Diner – bring cash, or be ready to use their ATM.”

can you or someone delete the part about ritter’s? it’s ending at eat n park for sure

How’s the pool ride coming?

it’s still not on the calendar

I think we lost people last year, but I think I enjoyed the more relaxed pace with less stops
