You can ride a brevet/populaire at your own pace. Check out Kent Peterson’s (http://mile43.com/peterson/) or Joel Metz’s (http://blackbirdsf.org/randonneuring/) rando pages, and you’ll find many folks prefer to the distances alone. It’s only a group ride if you want it to be.

Philly is most convenient just because we have family there, and the kids get to hang out with their cousins. I wish they lived in Ohio though–I’d much prefer flat to the arse-kicking hills in the east (last fall’s 100k/200k course was nearly one half up and one half down–there was I think at most one mile of flat roads).
