@Dave it’s worth a try! Won’t cost you more than a cog and lockring. I also recommend something to keep your feet attached to the pedals.

@troyer

Already one step ahead of you. The bike came with a flip-flop hub, cog, and lock ring. I got some toe clips, but quickly abandoned those as I need some practice getting my foot into them without falling over.

@Chemicaldave: I have an Earl as well. (Black though, and I’m not really riding it now cause I upgraded to a faster ride.) It rides fixed nice. To me, toe clips are a must. And you do need some practice with them. Totally worth it once you get the hang of it. Then again, you posted this 3 weeks ago, so you probably have a method by this point. :)

Yes. I went fixed, tried the toe clips, couldn’t get my other foot in with it fixed. I switched back to singlespeed so I can coast down fast hills easier.

Right on. I’m thinking of converting mine to an internally geared hub next summer. For now, it’s just sitting around lonely.

I don’t have a good picture but here goes…

Name: Tim

Neighborhood: Lawrenceville

type of riding: urban commuting, shopping, etc.

# bikes I own: two, the Novara Transfer that members here on the message board helped me get back a few years ago after it was stolen (bike pictured as avatar) and a Trek.

Music listening to: seem to be bouncing back and forth between Sun Kil Moon and Ella Fitzgerald. What that suggests, I have no idea.

Glad to finally become a member after much procrastination.

Hmm, interesting, if you’re that guy, maybe you’re the guy to put the word out about how badly somebody needs to develop a hostel in this ‘burgh.

Welcome!

Thanks, guys…..thanks again to you Erok for helping me get my stolen bike back back 09 or 10 or whenever it was….I seem to recall you had a sighting of my stolen bike, didn’t you? Yeah, I have no idea how those stories about Lawrenceville came together like that for this week’s paper…I feel a little weird about it. I’m not sure whatever happened to the mission to establish a new hostel in Pgh. I know there were some fundraisers for it in 09 but then it seemed to go quiet. Obviously not the best time to pursue something like that.

4 others from the board, or total 4 people on bicycles?

Dan1981

Just 4 others while commuting towards/from town, but I’ve seen others riding for presumably other reasons. Of course since our direction of travel is the same, that’s a limitation. Once I get down Sycamore I see cyclists everywhere and it’s great to see!

Welcome to the message board, Mike!

Those New Hampshire woods look great! Do you happen to have much experience with riding roads in the Peterboro area? I am looking for some route advice since I’ll be visiting that area soon.

I don’t have any experience in that part of the state (never lived there, just visit). I had a road bike in NH in the summer of 2004 and did some riding on the Kancamagus Highway (nice but strenuous) and east of Woodstock (also nice, with very few motorists). There is also a crit on a Nascar track in the middle of the state that I did twice – fun and pretty safe. Last summer was mountain biking only around North Conway – really nicely sculpted trails.

I wrote a lengthy tutorial on posting images to this board. Can’t find the thread though, sure would be swell if it got stickied.

You can use standard html to post photos. img src and all that. upload to tinypic.com and use the code they give you.

I suppose I should actually introduce myself at some point, now that I’ve even ridden with a couple of y’all…

Name: Jonathon, though Buffalo works fine

Neighborhood: I’ve lived all over the city, from Squirrel Hill to Fineview, but I’m in Lawrenceville currently

(no, i’m not from new york–actually, i’m from michigan originally, and may just be the only person in pittsburgh cycling in Red Wings shorts…)

type of riding: urban/commuting, though I’d love to get into touring

# of bikes: 2 (the functional one’s a Specialized Allez; the other is a hundred-dollar Target Special that was recently rescued after having been in my parents’ garage for five years and probably needs everything rubber replaced)

Music: i’m slow and easily distracted, so there’s been about fifteen tracks gone by on itunes since i started this, from Gogol Bordello to the Tim Malloys to the Dead Kennedys and back again.

fav picture of you on a bike (optional): there aren’t any that I know of, but here’s one of my bike:

Hey buffalo(x), I finally got around to patching your tube from the other night. It was snake bit (pinch flat)so you were most likely low on air prior to the flat since I don’t remember any extream potholes just prior to that dreaded hissing sound. BTW, nice intro other than that Red Wings reference… sheesh.

It wasn’t a pothole–it was one of those damn rocks that were all over the shoulder. I dodged something else and went right over it.
