Welcome, John! There are several people on the message board from that end of town. I too am a commuter, though I live north and don’t get east all that often.

There are plenty of group rides to meet up with, many but not all advertised on the board. Keep an eye out for the couple of riding games we have here, too, Tag-o-Rama and Wheelset of Fortune. Plenty more beyond that, too.

# of bikes: 1 Bright Yellow Iron Horse 2.0

Been lurking om this board for a little while now and wanted to say hi! I’ve been biking to work off and on from various neighborhoods to Downtown since 2009. The cycling bug bit me at church camp when I was little and I continued with it in the Boy Scouts and Venturing until I came to Pitt. Didn’t bike too much during that time, but getting a job Downtown and a need for cheap transportation got me back into it.

Currently, I only have time to bike once a week or so due to the time involved and being a new father/husband, but I love every minute of it when I can!

Probably won’t have a whole lot to offer due to my limited riding, but I’m looking forward to chatting more with you fine folks!

Board addict over the last couple of years, general poster of too-long messages. Haven’t posted to this thread I didn’t have a picture of me on a bike I liked. Thanks to fine folks at thick bikes for this one.

Urban riding, mostly commuting with some erranding in the mix (and am hoping a lot more in the future). Generally annoying cat-6 racer, jail trail vs. roadies, Forbes/fifth vs. cars.

1+? is complicated.

The 1 that works is the backup of the backup, a too short, remarkably heavy and clunky huffy mountain bike that doesn’t fit me and with a fairly comical super-wide comfort seat fitted.

The +? is in the probably vain hope I might resurrect the old trek 700 that I pronounced dead back in the polar vortex. Will probably try a new chain, hope for the best, and if that’s a non-starter give up on it. The clown bike that (mostly) carried me through from then till now, sadly, probably even more dead. After putting the message here, do you take dead bikes to freeride, leave out for the garbage man, something else??

At some point I’ll get something nice and take care of it. Maybe even the bike in the picture.

Welcome, Michael! I ride through West View three or four times a week, typically in the morning, riding in on Perry Hwy and up the steps behind McDonalds. So we’re bound to run into one another sooner or later.

Novice rider checking in!

Name: Jordan
Neighborhood: Regent Square/Point Breeze
Bikes: just one – an FBIKE folding bike that is kicking my butt right now.
Type of riding: commuting. Once I get better at bicycling, we’ll see about advancing past that.

I’ve been in Pittsburgh for about 4 years now, from San Diego originally. Any tips or advice anyone has for me is EXTREMELY welcome! Before this month, my last time riding a bike was over a decade ago.

Welcome! Lots of all types on this board so don’t feel intimidated by being a “novice”, and in fact being new to biking helps us reconnect with some of the challenges that some of us don’t even remember any more. Your input is much appreciated here, and don’t feel bashful about asking questions.

Something you may want to try is a 412-Flock ride. The next one is next Friday.

It’s a slow paced social ride of ten miles or so and is intended to help people get comfortable riding on city streets. It’s also a great way to meet other cyclists and ask questions, seek advice and whatnot.
