Something bright – new stadium lights in Station Square:

And I’ve been dying to use this one for something – a homemade DeeFence on Noblestown Rd:

And wow – Joanne – was that yesterday? We were biking by Station Square when the trail went icy, so we ended up going downtown and then trying the North Shore instead because it gets more sun. There was definitely some iffy spots!

It was yesterday! I was surprised–I figured someone had just forgotten to take down the fence/sign. After that I thought the Jail Trail and Junction Hollow were going to be a mess on the way home, but they were fine. Weird.

As far as fences go, this is as close to a “compound” as we get in my neighborhood:

I am pretty sure the driveway gate is electric, or can be remotely operated!

Time’s up. OK, this is the first time I did this part and here’s what happened… Made the lists:

Something Bright
1)Stu
2)srpit
3)Joanne
4)TD
5)Pinky
6)Marco
7)Swalfoort

Gate/Fence
1)Stu
2)PBeaves
3)Joanne
4)TD
5)Pinky
6)Marco
7)Swalfoort

Did the random number generator and got 2 and 2. Felt a bit guilty for picking myself and when I looked at it again I realized that I had included Pinky in the ‘Bright’ category and I shouldn’t have, so I re-did that one with just six entries and that time it came up 4. So… If I screwed that up, apologies to all. The new tag setters are: Team Decaf and PBeaves.

Extra points to Pinky, BTW – that was just the sort of fence I had in mind when I picked that!

Update on the Dino search: We got all of the ones you gave us here with the exceptions of the Oakmont and Center Ave ones. Couldn’t find one at Steel Plaza either. We have all the others though, so thanks very much. If you see any more we’d appreciate the info.

Tag 1
I have lots of favorite on-my-bike places.
Show me yours. It can be anything…
an unusual house, garden, park, bridge, business,
restaurant, public art, back road
– post your favorite
(or one of your many favorites).

The way I do the picking is to continue the numbering from the first list, so the second bunch would be numbered 8 to 15. Then spin the wheel twice and pick two differing numbers.

Topping this. We only have one tag right now – favorite on-bike places. This is the West End Bridge on my way to work:

Love that photo, Pinky!

OK, trails are too soft to go to a really favorite place (way out on the GAP), but I do like this spot on the North Shore trail at the Dockmaster’s house:

Thanks! As much as I gripe about the bad infrastructure west of the city, it does give me some damn beautiful sunrises on my way to work :)

And srpit – I also love that waterfall/koi pond/house place on the trail. Have you ever noticed, just past there heading towards the city, there is a camper suspended on I-beams hanging out from the trail?

I can’t figure out for the life of me how the heck it got up there/stays up there. I’ll try to snag a pic next time.

Perry Traditional Academy, a.k.a. Perry High School, on Perrysville Ave at East St on the North Side.

I like this spot because, when I bike the whole way in, like I did this morning, this is a bit more than half way, and it’s about at the highest point on the trip in terms of elevation.

This is the camper – I was mixed up and it’s right past the pond heading away from downtown. You can’t really tell from my pic, but it’s resting on these crazy supports out over the drop-off going down to the river. Whose idea was that?

@pinky , given how often I’ve seen the dock area under that camper flooded, I’m not surprised that the owner decided to have at least one structure that’s likely to stay dry…

Top. We only had one tag this time and no expiration date, but it’s over two weeks now. How about a new round? Weather should be improving – maybe some more folks will be ready to resume (or start) play.

One tag, only three participants; I’d say let’s give it a couple more days, but set an end time. We have a snowstorm coming, so that’s going to keep a damper on people getting out, but Thursday and Friday are supposed to be very nice.

How about let’s cut it off Friday night, March 8, 23:59. Maybe we can drum up some interest at Friday’s lunch meet-ups. Then spin the wheel overnight and get a fresh start over the weekend.

I think all in all this has been apretty mild winter- not as nice as last year, but there were only a few (maybe 3 or 4) days where I hesitated to ride. Over the last 12 years there were often a few weeks worth of days that I felt I had to drive to work because cycling was too dangerous.

Let’s tie up Round 59 and get rolling on the next one. We had only one tag, “Favorite Places”, and only three pics:
1) Pinky
2) srpit
3) myself
TeamDecaf set the tag, so all three count. I will exclude myself, so Pinky and srpit can set the tags for Round 60. Second person gets to set the closing date and time, which is usually a minute before midnight on whatever day, usually two weeks out.

Lions. Stone lions, cement lions, cardboard lions, real lions… I’ve seen some cool, old guardian lions around town. Show me some more! (NO mountain lions, please – different species)

It’s that time of year again – signs of spring! There aren’t many right this second, but I bet you can find them if you look carefully.

I’ll put in two weekends to give people a chance. Tags expire at midnight on Sunday, 3/25.

That’s fabulous! Is that on Prospect? There is one on Prospect toward Windgap that is just mind boggling.

It’s on East Crafton Ave, between Noble and Grace. This part of the borough has a number of the original Craft houses designed by/for Charles Craft and his family.

I’m not sure if this is a Craft house, but it’s gorgeous and well maintained.

If you ever want to check it out, hang a right on E. Crafton off of Noblestown (hard, hard right onto something that looks like an alley). Swing left at the T onto Grace, then bear right to stay on E. Crafton.

It’s about halfway down the hill on the left.

Stu found the lion that inspired it all.

I love the symmetry with TD & Pras!

TD, is that Dino in the background in someone’s yard? We don’t want to map any that might encourage people to trespass, but if it were right by the street we’d include it.

@srpit – yes, the dino is in someone’s yard. It’s visible from Devonshire (where this shot is taken), tough to see on the Ellsworth side. Ellsworth is on the right side of my shot.

Tag #2, signs of spring: Buds poking out through the snow and fallen leaves

Sign of spring: buds!

This is right outside my back door. They’re a little difficult to see, but they’re almost dead center in the photo, just a couple of green shoots sticking up barely an inch.

Ooooo, TULIPS!!!

Here’s one of the lions flanking the entrance of Linden Elementary–I’ve heard they’re modeled on the lions outside the NY Public Library.
