Tag #2 Home away from home:

Not at all creative, but this is my home for the next 2 years at least, fourth floor (translation: fifth floor, because Germans, like much of Europe and computer scientists, like to start counting at 0) on the right (because apartments don’t usually have numbers here). My kitchen and bathroom window are actually behind the leaves, fail! I did lay on the ground on the sidewalk in the middle of the day to get this picture, so that counts for something.

EDIT: and I technically missed the deadline, so double fail!

Tag #1: Places to cool off

Since we’ve talked on another thread about places to swim or cool off, let’s tag some.

I’ll let RustyRed set the end time and date.

Tag #2
*Emergency!*

I got a nice shot this morning of my bike in front of some rainbow graffiti and nearly pulled a rookie move of using a previously used tag. Ooops. Thankfully I got a back up:

End date: August 5th… sometime in the AM. :)

End time is usually 23:59 of that day, just to make it simple.

Since I don’t know of any good place to *legally* swim/cool off, I will have to trust the judgement of the geese I saw while riding yesterday. Altoona Reservoir, near the HorseShoe Curve.

Here’s the waterfall sculpture on the North Shore. There are signs posted that you shouldn’t, but I see folks like these kids wading in it all the time…even on a ‘chilly’ day like today.

Tag #2: Emergency: A Pittsburgh city police car.

The evening of July 26, three of us (@buffalobuffalo, @pbeaves and I) were on a bike ride through the East End, and found ourselves on the receiving end of a negative interaction with a nasty motorist. We called 911, and in a few minutes had a pleasant conversation with the driver of this car. Thus, a real, bicycling related emergency call.

A place to cool off.

Leslie Park Pool

Well, it used to be, anyway.

(Ok, here’s a real one, the spray fountain in the same park:

This sign cracks me up because, well, does it look visible from any road? So if it’s really a snow emergency, you’re never going to see this one.

Tag #1 – Cooling off. Evergreen Park, Ross Twp.

They don’t let you swim, but there is shade and you can dangle your toes in the water.

Some time ago here was a theme of “animal and bikes”. It’s “a little bit too late” but I still put some pictures of racing cat:

Tag #1 Place to cool off: U-Bahn (Subway) Station. I’ve definitely “missed” a connection in some of the cooler, more underground stations just to enjoy the temperature, which is especially refreshing when the temperatures hit 100°F here in the land of no A/C.

Tag #2 Emergency!: I tried to get a picture of one of the really brightly colored ambulances, but didn’t succeed. Here is the garage of the closest volunteer and professional fire department.

good call on the subway… there’s this one spot along the Ghost Town Trail that I love because the cut-out through rocks on either side feels like nature’s air-conditioning due to the mineral water dripping down on both sides of the rock face and cooling the breeze as it bottle-necks through.

Crap, did I do it wrong? Am I supposed to pick a # between 1 and 6 and then 7 and 11?

EDIT: oh, wait… I see what I did wrong! I was supposed to kick myself off of the tag I set… gotcha. Sorry…

The only ones that should slink off in shame are those too afraid to try! This is a confusing game, and I know that keeps people away (I’m talking to YOU, mysterious person).

I’m still getting a feel for the rules, myself.

In the past week, I encountered the irritating issue of a parking garage removing and not replacing its bike rack. Simply put, we’re not welcome there anymore. A couple of days later, I needed to tie up my bike in West View but there wasn’t a rack anywhere in sight, so I U-locked it to a gas meter.

So, Round 69, tag #1 is: Coping strategies. Where did you tie up your bike when you couldn’t, close to where you needed or wanted to?

TAG #2: entrance to nowhere

There are many doors that lead to nothing even streets that do to so go forth and go nowhere.

Stairs to nowhere:

These are the remnants of a path and stairway from Point State Park up to The Ft Duquensne Bridge. I had to get it from 3 angles.

Thanks!
Actually, funny you should mention names…I’ve been thinking of naming her. I keep calling her The Purple Bike. *yawn*

“Belles N Whistles”?
Add a green question mark and call her “The Riddler”?

Tag#1 Lockup coping…

When we go to Pirates games, I prefer to lockup at the Maz statue here:

But with the upsurge in attendance lately, and the dozens of bikes I see locked up to trees (ACK!) and lampposts around the Park with the removal of the parking meters, I’ve scoped out a spot with a iron fence I can hook to:

Tag 1: Parking Coping Strategies.
This jackwagon apparently couldn’t find a place to park, so he/she drove across the trail and parked in the weeds. (And I understand if this doesn’t count, but it made me laugh in a not so funny way yesterday.)

Tag 2: Entrance to Nowhere.
This entrance to a little room in the West End Bridge pillar was just recently fenced off. I was OK with that, since it was always a little sketchy to bike past.

( RANT )Ugh, I’m about ready to fire off a letter to the Casino about these asshats. They kick up the lot’s rocks all over the trail and the casino employees who park there use the trail as an exit/entrance and frequently don’t LOOK TO SEE if there’s pedestrians or cyclists on the trail first before driving on it. Sometimes they park with half the vehicle on the trail! ( /RANT )

^ I have called 911 (not 311) to report cars parked on the trail here a few times. I’m not sure how often they respond, but I did see them tow once, albeit on a steeler sunday. But I think reporting these vehicles creates a paper trail that might be useful down the road should trail issues arise with the casino.

Um, pardon my ignorance, but isn’t there a multi-story parking garage about 500 feet away? I find it hard to believe that it’s filling anywhere near capacity on a commuter weekday.

Coping strategy: Still no bike racks at Kelly-O’s diner, so we usually use the guard rail around the parking lot. I didn’t actually put the lock on today – just leaned the bike in the usual spot for a quick photo:
