Steven – awesome suggestion! I’d never used Google Docs before and it was just the ticket for this! Here’s the link for anyone interested in the list of the ones we know about but haven’t gotten to yet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AkUVpELyxQ4ydE5RLWhySUxvU3Jzem42ekF6LWpDOHc#gid=0

I haven’t had the time to transfer the list of the ones we already have yet, but those photos are posted and that link is above.

Thank you!

Thanks, Stu. I’ve added those to our search list. This is turning into a much larger project than we first realized. We have 50 still left to ride to. Should keep us amused for several weeks. :)

That’s a fantastic collection you have already. This city is rich with these things. Great project.

I just thought of another nice one in Carnegie.

There is also a mural near the top of Brosville street, below the old terminal for the Knox Incline, and a mural on the daycare in Allentown, across from Alla Famiglia. The latter is by Lucas Stock, a seriously talented guy, as are many of the murals linked above. There is also one on Brownsville Road in Carrick on the side of this strange little building which I think is owned by a utility, between the Shop n Save and a mini-mart, near the top of Noble’s Lane.

Welcome to Mt. Lebanon!

Side of P&G Diner, Route 19 at Peermont (one block past Scott) as I recall.

This is great stuff! We’ll be looking for these things into next year at this rate. :)

@Marko82 – We have the Southside one; adding the Carrick one to the list. Thanks!

@Jacob McCrea – I’m not familiar with the streets in Mt Washington. Is the one on Brosville near where it intersects with E. Warrington?

Is the Lucas Stock one the one with a trolly car on it at 813 E Warrington?

I’m looking at a map of Carrick (again – not at all familiar with this area). Is that third one near the Southside Cemetery? Thanks for all the help!

@/Swalfoort – Nice one! Thanks.

^Yes, yes (but check the address) and no. The one in Carrick is next to the grocery store on Brownsville Road. It is a mural of mountains next to an ocean.

The carrick one that Jacob mentions is next to the shop n save (brownsville and minooka). I forgot about that one.

@swalfoort There’s another mural on the side of the T building about a quarter mile from that mural.

Chris, do you know the address or cross-streets?

I took a ride on the 2 Mt Royal bus and found several.

* North Side, Cedar Av just S of EOhio facing W.

* Millvale, end of Meade St, just as you exit 28 outbound.

* Millvale, Attic Records.

* Millvale, church playground by Grant/North.

* Millvale Lanes has a small one.

* Sidelines Bar & Grill has a football themed mural.

* Sometimes it’s hard to tell the diff btwn a mural & graffiti. e.g., Jesters Tavern in Etna.

* Etna, Small bldg next to ballfield has a mural. Might be tile.

Some of these are less public murals and more commercial advertising for whatever business it is. The Attic Records one, however, really stands out. Two of them, actually, and superbly done.

Also, I think Thompson Run Rd is open. I rode past both ends within the past two days and saw no orange signs.

@Vannevar

Shady Dr E across from the police/fire station. 555 Washingon is the for the safety building. Walk to the Shady Dr E corner and you’ll see it.

Ha! I see it’s not on Google Streetview. The address above gets you there though. Apparently the alley next to the mural is listed as Parse St. on the map.

Have the first two, Stu, but none of the others. Thanks. We knew there were some in Millvale, but didn’t have the specifics.

Glad to hear Thompson Run is open again. I haven’t paid much attention the few times I’ve been through at that end of Babcock lately. If memory serves me, there would be more climbing on Thompson Run than if we went out Babcock. We’re thinking maybe some Sunday morning might be the best time to attempt it – what do you think?

If you have proper gearing, Thompson Run shouldn’t be that difficult. You’re following a stream, so you climb a natural valley.

If only all roads in the area could look like Babcock running north out of Millvale. Check my arrow picture on the Wheelset game for a good view of the wide shoulder [scroll down to 2nd photo]. The problem is what to do when you get to the corner by the car wash, and it becomes a four-lane, shoulder-less speedway with a high curb, on a hill, on a curve. [StreetView] There just isn’t any good way to ride it, nor is there much of an alternative.

That said, if you want to ride out to the elephant mural, I’d be happy to meet you in Millvale, though this Sunday morning might not work since I will have out of town company.

Stu, I know exactly what you’re talking about on the stretch by the car wash.. I used to drive through there a lot and can’t imagine attempting it with a bike.

@srpit – Tomorrow/Sunday might work after all. My company was only overnight into this morning. It’s next weekend that might be tougher to do.

@StuInMcCandless – That sounds great! Would an 0630 departure from the Millvale Trailhead under the 40th St. bridge work? Is that too early? We could meet you by the gazebo.

I’ll set the alarm for 5, get underway by 5:45, meet you at the gazebo by 6:30. I’ll send you a PM thru the board (ck upper right corner of page).

Wow! That’s amazing. Great find.

EDIT: Here are a couple mural projects that I didn’t see on your list:

– Larimer: House on Omega Pl half a block up from Larimer Ave

- Troy Hill: This one’s pretty recent, but cool – https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.273659972667782.74283.224113760955737&type=1

I’ll post again if I think of any others. This is a sweet project.

That Troy Hill one went up last Oct. A pair of really nice ladies have an orginization called Colorize Pittsburgh.

I helped them paint it. 2 days and I still have concrete primer on my samba’s.

Good times.

@edmonds59 – Any idea how high the water got to on those buildings after Ivan in 2004? Are those murals all done since then?

The last one is actually dated ’05. The water in ’04 would have been about to the top of the bench on the left.

anybody point out the Kaleidoscope Cafe on 43rd in Lawrenceville? They painted the building’s outside to look like… well, a kaleidoscope. Not sure if that counts as a mural or advertising or just a beautiful paint job. I love it. Google Street View has the old cafe in that location with a boring paint job (I submitted a thing to try and get them to update Street View), but the current operators have a picture of part of it up on their home page: http://www.kaleidoscopepgh.com/index.html

I’ve not eaten there yet, but go past it all the time to get to the Ice House. Someone there bikes to work regularly too. My husband is in love with their build your own burgers.

We did get the Kaleidoscope already, ejwme. Thanks for the suggestion though. Please keep ‘em coming. I’m sure there are more that we don’t already have on our list to hunt down. BTW, anyone know of another bride mural? Besides the really awesome one on Penn Ave I mean. I found something on line about it, but the address they gave doesn’t exist. The web site said “Brighton Rd and McCollough St south of California”. No such animal as “McCollough” St anywhere in the area as far as I can find. Help, anyone?

I believe they refer to the lady who lives here

http://goo.gl/maps/WhKvh

..although she dosnt appear in streetview. She’s in the tag-o-rama game too.

Edit: tag #333

We missed two in Millvale. There is this huge one by the inbound off-ramp from Rt 28:

…and a small one on the side of a bowling alley at the corner of North and Lincoln.

No pic, but southbound Perry Hwy, Ross Twp, on a low brick wall in front of the gas station across from Brandt Funeral Home (Perry at Lindley Lane). Wide, not very tall.

Thanks, Steven. We’ll put it on the list.

Pinky, do you have an address or cross streets on that one? Thanks you for the help!

Stu – We got those two in Millvale. Will look for the one on Perry Hwy. Thanks again.
