Shall we commence "Breakaneuring" (includes "Egganeuring")?

So we’ve wrapped up the Soupaneuring, and we previously discussed moving on to Egganeuring. Van and I discussed Egganeuring could include anything made with eggs (waffles, etc) and then thought maybe the group would just like to go with Breakfast in general.

So – how about we get a consensus on this sorted out by the end of this week (9 Feb) and set the time frame until the end of March?

Same basic rules as Soupneuring. Just decide if we need to specify eggs and things made with eggs, or let people go with any traditionally accepted breakfast food.

What do you think?

going with anything “breakfasty” may be better to avoid exclusion of anyone whom chooses not to digest animal matter/byproducts.

it should also be fair game to permit off-hours dinning experiances, 8pm pancakes are awesome too. :)

I tried to do the coffee one, but restricting myself only to weekends made it difficult for me and I only managed to do about 3 or 4 before giving up. My schedule is weird and sometimes unpredictable. Anyway, I’d be much more inclined to participate if the day of the week rule was relaxed.

Breakaneuring #1 – with Vanevar – 7 Feb
Caffe Davio, 2516 East Carson St

Spent the day riding on streets because most of the trails were still just too slippy. We had a few pieces of public art to search for that we wanted to add to the new murals website (debuting next month) so that was OK. Before heading up to see if Sir Samelot had changed his seasonal attire, we decided to try Caffe Davio for our first Breakaneuring event. I got adventurous (for me) and went with a Hawaiian Omelet with spinach added. Not bad. The potatoes were really good and the bread is excellent.

A little over 22 miles on a fairly pleasant day for February.

Here’s a video of the ~10-minute ride to Valliant’s. Most of it is on a frozen trail. The glare ice on gravel part was tricky to ride on. So were the frozen puddles that my front tire did not fall into but my rear tire did. Twice.

Meanwhile, I don’t know of another spot where you can go from primitive trail to operating a pedestrian crossing button at a traffic light in so short a time.

1:30 fording the stream
3:40 glare ice
4:20 wheel-size hole
6:03 the first frozen puddle I fall through
6:50 almost lose it. After this, I moved to traveling between the ruts.
7:30 civilization again
10:14 driver didn’t give me 4 feet, but to be fair, I moved left a bit before I signaled my turn.

If you feel like watching more, this was my ride home, too. I did not use the trail, but rather Three Degree Road, which I hate because it’s uphill and has a sweeping right curve and a tall curb. I took the lane. Surprisingly, I had little trouble doing this, for it being a busy time in the middle of a nice Saturday afternoon with heavy traffic.

5:25 I think about getting to the right but think better of it because there just isn’t space for anyone to get around me
7:10 now on Perry Highway, where I’ve learned to stay to the right, for better or worse
9:04 camera inexplicably shuts off after only 30 minutes of use

The second video uses Google’s shakiness correction, so the timestamp flutters all over. The downside of this is that the image is cropped somewhat. In the original, for example, I could clearly see the prices at the gas station around 6:40-6:55. Also, I lose some of the left side of the image, so cannot ID the cars passing me.

Breakaneuring #1 at the Beehive on East Carson. Iced coffee on the left, iced cappuccino, right. Pumpkin walnut biscotti on the left, peanutbutter chocolate on the right.

Barista (or is it Baristo, if it’s a guy?) allowed us to bring bikes in since we didn’t have locks. Thanks!

26.26 miles today, lots of riding, photographing. Awesome February day.

Breakaneuring-2 at Braddock Community Cafe with SR.PIT, I’ve been wanting to go there since I read about it in the Post-Gazette.

No photo available, camera operator error (me).

This place really exceeded expectations. The food was fresh, excellent, reasonably priced. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and a yogurt parfait, and I expected pretty much a McD kind of deal. What I got was a fresh tasty sandwich made from local food, whole wheat bread – and the parfait, they took out a bowl and started mixing yogurt, fruit, granola. It’s the healthiest thing I’ve eaten in a week. I think we spent $10 between the two of us.

You enter through a double-door into a hallway that goes to the Cafe and also (further down) to a gym, we moved our bikes inside to the hallway so we didn’t have to sweat leaving them outside and that was very nice.

They have a multi-mission thing going on, they’re trying to serve fresh food in a town where you can’t buy a meal, they’re serving healthy local food instead of fries and burgers, and they’re supporting a youth program. Very ambitious and they’re working it.

It’s definitely a startup in Month-Two, but Sabrina the honcho seems to really know what she’s doing, and I’ll go back there again.

Though only 1/4 mile from my house, I took the long way around — Perrymont, McKnight, Babcock, Three Degree, and Perry. Total of about four miles. I captured video of this trip, too, just to get a view of what climbing Three Degree Road looks like with the camera pointed backwards.

Breakaneuring #3 last Saturday with Vannevar:

Whole Foods for custom made omelets while out on yet another Dino hunt. We started on the North Shore, stopped in town to find the Mosaic Tunnel by Virgil Cantini, then off to hunt dinos. Got the one at the W. PA School for Blind Children in Oakland; swung by a Bloomfield mural to re-shoot our photo; down Friendship to Whole Foods. Yum. I’m starting to like the Whole Foods cafe thing a lot. Our omelets being cooked:

After we polished all of that off, we went for the dino Pseudacris (I think) told us about on Centre. Then to another mural to re-shoot the photo in higher resolution; a stop by Sir Samelot to see if he was getting ready for St Patrick’s Day yet (he wasn’t); then to the Strip District to catch up with a mutual friend of ours.
27.88 miles total
Nice to get in a ride after the cold, crummy week of weather.

Breakaneuring #3 – the bagel place that used to be Kiva Han, Forbes and Craig. Bagel Factory? Anyway, not the Starbucks across the street!

This had to be fast, so fast I didn’t even tweet it, as I had to get back to the TEDxCMU event up the street. Technically it was lunch, but it was the first meal I had all day, so to me it was breakfast: A bagel and a cup of coffee, $2.99.

This was after a quick ride down from the University Center, following a ride into Oakland from McCandless. At this point in the day, I had maybe 13 miles under me. By day’s end I had a bit over 20, making for the first 60-mile week since November.

The tweet went through, but I’m still looking for the picture I took.
Anyway, at OTB, after the Pedal for the Pantry ride, I had one of their $10 “Advocate” burgers, which includes a fried egg! Enormous! I ate the fries, took one bite of the sandwich, boxed the rest. It’s so big it will probably make for two more meals!

Hey I realize this is sort of past, but on my way to work today, I spotted something new. This is on Main Street in the West End, I noticed it mainly because they have this old ass bike permanently stationed on the railing outside. It’s called apparently “Tartine”, there’s a facebook page but no website that I could find. It alleges to have French style breakfasts and starting Wednesday, lunch. I might get a chance to try it on my Wednesday commute, but somebody who goes out for breakfast, do try it out and report. It looks like the most adorable little place.

So I stopped at Tartine, 400 South Main Street, West End, this morning, risking missing the bike count, and high cholesterol. It’s a French themed cafe that is over-the-top adorable. I had a fresh crispy croissant with scrambled eggs and chevre, potatoes on the side, so good it almost made me want to cry. While traffic stacked up a hundred cars long going toward the WEC, heh, heh. Suckers. That was $8 so, not cheap, but then egg-mc-muffins do not make you want to cry in that way. They are only open M-F 7:00 am thru lunch, but god we have got to talk them into some weekend hours. Owner is a lovely gentleman named Lou. I highly recommend heading over for breakfast or lunch, check out the West End. I can provide my smooth clean relatively stress free route to there thru the WEC if anyone likes. Make sure they notice if you go by bike. I have a diabolical plan, I will be posting later……….

Stu, I re-checked their hours, it’s M-F, 8 until 2, not 7 am. So don’t bother getting up early. I’m a little bummed because that to me does not seem like a business plan for success.
