This is making my head spin, so I’ve added the new stolen bikes to the stolen bikes page on the Wiki. See http://bikingpgh.com/index.php?title=Bikes_reported_stolen
At least this puts pictures of the stolen bikes all in one place to make it easier to check them.
I added the bikes I saw here on the message board. Please PM me if you’d like an account to add more. Anyone can do it. Just send me your preferred account name and email address.

It’s so sad to hear about all the stolen bikes! Wonder what is causing the uptick in theft.

Hopefully they are found! (I was fortunate enough to get my bike back when it was stolen last year).

And another one.

Sarah P. has shared a report on FB of a Jamis Coda Comp (two tone silver) that was stolen yesterday (Monday, 7/14) from a lot downtown.

I added it to the page. Thirteen bikes there now, two missing pictures.

I thought I read recently that someone had their rig stolen from in front of Jimmy John’s in South Side, distinctive bike, if I remember correctly.

I bet that’s up there. I added something referenced from @pearmask’s FB page. She works there.
Er, maybe not. The one from @pearmask says it was stolen from One Oxford Center. Anyway, send the info out through the usual channels, and I’ll try to catch it; or you can edit the page yourself, just PM me for an account on the wiki. I need username + preferred email.

There’s almost too many to remember to look for now

Please add mine – I have a photo I can send: Scott 29 Team
(size small), Rock Shox front fork, Shimano components, all white with an orange & white Bike Nashbar woman’s seat with cut-out, front & rear fenders. Stolen on June 30th from the Graduate School of Public Health at Pitt (covered parking garage – surveillance camera does not cover the bike racks), locked with an OnGuard Doberman cable lock (had been sufficient for 2 years in another garage – just started parking at this new location after changing jobs & hadn’t had a chance to get a new U-lock big enough for the 29er). I have the serial number. Pitt Police emailed a few days later to tell me they’d spotted a guy arrested last year for bike theft. Great … Thanks for getting the word out.

@Writedit, done. You can upload the photo here and I’ll pick it up. Just click the tiny picture button above the edit window and enter the URL or click upload, and apply the image to your post.

Here is my Scott 29 Team, stolen June 30, 2014 (no snow but did have fenders on – and was not upside down – looks fine on my Mac, so I’m not sure how to right-side it here …):

I haven’t figured out why the photos post upside down (in fairness, I haven’t really tried) but it seems to be a problem with the page itself since the orientation is fine on my computer before u/l a photo.

Whatever the case, if anyone clicks on the photo, it will open with the correct orientation.

As I understand it, Apple decided to start generating jpeg files in a non-standard way.

Jpeg files had an optional “orientation” field that meant “By the way, when this picture was taken, the camera noted that it was at an angle of (0/90/180/270) degrees.” It didn’t affect how programs were to display the jpeg. If a camera wanted to generate a rotated image, it had to actually move the bits around to rotate it.

But then, mostly to speed up image processing on an early iPhone model with a slow processor, Apple decided to reinterpret the field to mean “When displaying this image, first rotate it like so.” They generated images using this convention, and their own programs interpreted it too.

Except when that would break compatibility with earlier conventions. Images that are part of existing web pages sometimes had an orientation field set, and browsers ignored it. So browsers have to continue to ignore it to avoid misdisplaying earlier web pages.

Some programs ignore Apple’s convention (which was also adopted by some other phone/camera makers). Others follow it. Still others follow it sometimes. The result is a big mess.

Whatever the case, if anyone clicks on the photo, it will open with the correct orientation.

Sometimes. According to my tests:

Chrome and Safari: Display the photo upside down. Click and it appears right side up.

Firefox and IE: Always display the photo upside down. (I believe Firefox has changed its handling on this twice now. This is as of Firefox 30.)

And from what I’ve read, the iOS versions of Safari and Chrome, unlike the desktop version, displays the photo right side up always (meaning they will probably display older web sites incorrectly).

If you use an image editor to strip out all EXIF data, then rotate it if necessary, the result should look right on all programs in all circumstances. (This completely removes the ambiguous setting.) On Windows, Irfanview is one program that can do this. Not sure about Macs. Someday maybe this web site will do that sort of thing for you automatically.

@steven, thanks for that explanation.
Turns out Gimp will strip out the EXIF for you, too. Here’s the Scott 29 team, stripped and rotated.

BTW I updated it on the Wiki, too.

Could you please add my stolen bike to the wiki as well?

An old 1970s small women white road bike, made by Peugeot, last seen in Friendship on July 15th, 2014, between 6:30-8pm

To people who have had their bike stolen, I’d recommend contacting whoever you bought the luck from and telling them your bike got stolen

To those of us who know to use U-Locks, I suggest we take the time and stop and leave notes for people using cable locks. I really wanted Bike-Pgh to take the lead on developing something like a door hanger, but in their inaction, I might take the lead on this project myself

Incidentally, they’ve spent a bunch of resources on taking photos of people with their bikes, but an ounce of prevention is a lot more valuable right? Especially since the people who are getting their bike stolen probably aren’t part of BikePGH and the tags if from BikePGH could pull them into becoming members

@jonawebb – great idea to consolidate these on the wiki page

@steven – thanks for explaining why my photos won’t orient correctly ever since I gave in and upgraded IOS on my Mac. I thought I’d screwed up some setting!

Question/suggestion: Could getting some sort of group deal on a good quality U-Lock through Bike-Pgh be something worth doing? A member benefit? A quality lock (perhaps with the Bike-Pgh logo on it??) for a good price available to members?

Here is my setup. Kryptonite Keeper with mount. The blue thing used to be swim goggles but a piece broke off. It keeps the lock from flopping around while I ride.

From that comment, CW, can we assume that the H300 Marko spotted and posted here WAS yours? Or am I reading too much into your posting?
