I notice that neither of us did a wide shot for context. Sorry about that. Annoyingly there doesn’t appear to be an up to date photo online. But I did find this (from 2009):

At present the (original?) concrete steps have been restored. It looks much nicer.

stefb and I agreed on a location for the next tag and discussed some possible perspectives. Should be up later today.

I’m curious what “nom” means and what nom things are going to happen across the street?

Ahh well, ahem!

Nom means “food”, and accross from the Hill House-Kauffman Center, a new Shop-and-Save grocery store will be built. This is HUGE for the area, since they haven’t had a grocery store in the community for decades.

A bit of history: This tag is on the Hill Distric part of town, which is currently pretty ghetto compared to the rest of town. Back in the day it used to be a booming hotspot for jazz music and culture, but after the Civil Right’s riots of the 60’s, and the constuction of the Mellon Arena which destroyed the most of the lower hill area close to downtown, the community never quite-recovered. However, over the last 10 years some things seem to be finally happening in there -specially on Centre Avenue. The new Carnegie Library, the new business-building, the grocery store, and what I think is a new apartment building… shessh, I think this is the most action I;ve ever seen in the Hill!

BTW -those are all new steps, installed after the renovation of the center

I’m pretty sure that’s in reference to a future grocery store going in there. Shop n Save, maybe?

Glad to see a tag in the Hill. It’s one of a bunch of places in the city that have gotten very few tags. Oddly, Oakland has very few tags, for all the chasing through and our gathering within it. North, West and South-of-MtWashington have gotten scant attention, too.

Riddle me this.. Actually I am not too much of a riddler. Just wondering how such a monolithic tag sits unfound for 5 hours. Here is another clue:

yep, the clue is the tag from a different angle.

Fun fact: not only will this building be in the new batman movie, its colonnade is made of the largest monolithic columns in the world.

Ah! I think that first clue was even worse now. Worse = I was way off, thinking financial institutions. Interesting angles though.

Additional, not so fun fact: (unless you use animal models) Animal research is conducted in that building

Nice wedding shoots, nice guards

Personal interesting fact: My great-great gradfather was an iron worker who helped build that building!

Pierce, I encourage you to break in and free the animals. Then they will bite you, and you will become a zombie. Then we can have a zombie apocalypse. I am ready for it. I think I can outrun a zombie on my bike, and i learned what i need to know from Zombieland.

On closing the loop — the stone on that building is Indiana limestone which by way of 30-year-old movies takes us back to cycling, and European bike racing, and then of course to exoskeletons. Or more directly, if you lean close up against the stone of many of the buildings around there you’ll see tiny shells and fossil remnants of ancient sea creatures. Invertebrates, naturally ….

On another interesting fact about that Tag:

@Pierce: you are right about the animal testing :(

@all: back when I was a student at CMU, I was “locked” overnight in the building twice with other friends while we were making a student-horror film (I was in charge of special effects)…. anyhow, on breaks from shooting, I would go and explore the building, the highlights: got to dance in the helicopter pad on the roof, got lost on the mechanical plenum area ((it was like a jungle!)), and found an abandoned locker room that –seriously– I don’t think had been touched in 20 years. There was stuff left on the lockers, boxes on the floor, everything covered by a very fine layer of dust. It was SO COOL!! It was very odd, must say.

Oh, and inside the building, I don’t know if is the experiments they’ve done there or what, but at night, some of the corridors seemed to give this very low-glow.

Ok ok…… done!!

The batman scene will have a motorcycle ride up the steps, explode off the doors, and ride into the building.

@Stef Thanks! It was indeed awesome to be there! I think those were the only times I was ever on that building. Since I was an architecture major, I didn’t really have any other reason to be there.

Unfortunately, that happened in the last decade before cellphones became popular or had cameras, so I did not take any photographs of the experience :( Also, I don’t have a copy of the movie -which pisses me off! It was done on a 8mm camera and the director/guy friend was too lazy to make copies. Afterwards he moved to germany so don’t know what ever happened. It was only 9 minute short film, B&W, BUT it came out awesome! I was the special effects AND bug ranger for it… the movie was called “The Artifact” and it involved crawling insects -madagascar roaches- that I got to “act”, plus I also had to make an “artifact” that dissolved in “blood”…… and I did it!

ahhh…. memories are pouring in! It was so much fun!
