I drooped a pin right on it in google maps. If it is still there in the morning, I will go after it. I have to pack for the 5 boros ride tonight though (*excitement!*)

I rode around the east end for a while trying to find a creative tag. I saw quite a few but I’d like to make you guys work a bit for it. This one is at what I belive to be the highest point between the rivers. It is just outside city limits. There is a giant water tower just outside the field of view on the right. The buildings in the pic are downtown. I belive this is one of the furthest points downtown can be seen.

Here is the view, you can see part of the fence on te right that surrounds the water tower.

Here is another photo:

This water treatment plant is nearby, maybe about 1/2 mile north east. This is not the tag.

Sorry for the crappy iPhone photos. If you what more clues just let me know. I might be able to get a daytime photo in the morning depending on what is going on.

Surprised that Pgh. Montessori school tag went so fast.

Here is a google earth snapshot of what you might see in the day time:

Photobucket

Here is the water tower on street view (note the steep hill the google car is on, if you come from the other direction it is not nearly as bad):

Here is another street view photo, if you look real close you can see the Cathedral of Learning, you can see downtown through all of the haze:

Photobucket

My best guess by looking at google it that is at about 1225 to 1250 feet in elevation.

That no pets sign and fence is so stupid. I guess dog owners were abusing the grass so they put up giant ugly signs and a fence in front of another fence. Way to beautify the neighborhood.

after about a half hour of work, i found the current tag. i was thinking of heading that way after work for a ride/errand. perhaps i will consider it more strongly now.

@rsprake: um, most fences around schoolyards are probably more about keeping kids safe from abduction, and probably less about dog poo and aesthetics.

rsprake

The giant even uglier 20 ft chain link fence probably has more to do with keeping kids inside, the black fence serves no other purpose other than to keep people off of the grass.

I’ll bet the kids can get through that hole at the bottom of the fence, and I’m sure that some can climb it. I think they need razor wire, and probably Dobermans in the no-man’s land between the fences.

@rsprake – keeping them in, keeping them out, maybe both. One thing is for certain, that fence keeps predators out, and you will find one around every school yard.

That black fence has probably been there for 80 years though. Nobody – and certainly not Pittsburgh Public Schools, is going around installing wrought iron fences these days. And certainly not to keep out dogs.

I am thinking something like this Lyle.

When I was a kid playgrounds weren’t prisons and we liked it!

Lyle

oh, yeah! INVISIBLE Dobermans, even better/worse.

the Herron tower tag is at 1260 ft

the new tag is at 1261 ft

I have a ‘between the rivers’ tag to drop at 1350 ft… there’s just a pinch more elevation to be found out there :)

Montessori fence: the tall one surrounds the playground behind the school & also serves to keep kickballs, footballs, etc from flying into the street. There’s also a garden on the one side between the iron & chain link & trees scattered about, so it’s not entirely unpleasant aesthetically. FWIW, the side playground w/ slides & jungle gym doesn’t have the tall fencing, which reinforces my flying object theory.

the corner of cushing and brushton, up past lemington off mt. carmel. i did work for it, by the way! but i was planning on headed to dirty harry’s (my route there goes out lincoln) after work, and managed to do that, despite getting there after they closed (apparently they close at 6, but they were kind enough to let me make my purchase, and harangue them with my many questions–good folks!).

I was going to comment yesterday about spots between the rivers, not too far away, at better than 1300 feet, but now I will not mention it. :)

My statement about invisible Dobermans was not meant to be factual.

that orange public notice sign is the first i’ve ever seen on this place, as new ownership is coming. i doubt they’ll rebuild the gazebo that once stood here, though.

more info – for those of us in the dark?

Jason

I figured it out, now the issue is to find the time to run over there. I need to run some errands down that way. There are enough clues in the photo to find it even if you have never been there. Great photo!

Tag:

Doc’s Place on Walnut St in Shadyside. I saw the “lace” on the window on the picture and started googling “palace” thinking it was a Chinese restaurant. Next it tried “place” and this was the first result.

Actually, the China Palace, next door to Docs, was where the Gazebo was. At least when I worked there. I was convinced that’s wehre the tag was.

Jason

May 2 2011 at 5:35pm #

It is funny because when I searched Palace, the Chinese place next door was the first result I looked at.

Wherever this new tag is, saltm513 should be the one to get it. It would go well with her colorful bike.

Lyle

Oh, the thumbnail map totally gives it away.

dwillen

The thumbnail doesn’t, but the pixels in the redacted information do! I feel like David Caruso yelling “enhance that!” at my computer.

I found it using only Nate’s image above:

@Jason, if you’re coming from town, keep going, to the next big intersection. The restaurant is on your left as you approach. Less than a mile. Old-style fare.

You can also just read the name of the place on the sign in the original post, or at least, enough of the words to google it.

By chance, I had been thinking of biking up that way last Sunday, though in the end I took the bus instead. Didn’t hear any voices as I passed though. :-)
