for the record, i went to the gate on the trail and saw there were a bunch of construction workers milling about. i opted to double back to the office park where the fence ended to cut through to carson, instead of giving them a reason to lock the path that marko doesnt use.

Here is a somewhat earlier picture of the tag site

Now I’m going to spend my afternoon hunting down historic pictures. Thanks for reminding me of that image database, Marko!

Any idea how Allegheny County ends up with a pseudopod reaching the river?

What a pseudopod? Only references on the internet refer to biology.

melange396

when i saw it on that map, i guessed that it had to do with access to the river for a source of water. this is based off the pumphouse at the locked gate and associated ongoing ‘water st’ construction work there.

What I always heard was that when J&L wanted to put their research center on top of the hill (The Acadamy now) they wanted it to be in the city so they only had to deal with one municipality for taxes etc. Baldwin Boro was happy to ‘sell’ this to the city to comply, but they retained some school district rights in case homes or other things were ever built up there. When that developer from Beaver was trying to put a race track up there a few years ago this was talked about among the old-timers. I’m not sure how true it is.

This page notes that Baldwin has had many chunks cut out of it over its history, including Hays in 1901, but Hays didn’t become part of Pittsburgh until 1928. I’m not sure how that squares with Marko’s story.

Also, I’d think a fairly rural area like Baldwin, at that time, would have lower taxes that Pittsburgh, and no company would want to pay more taxes than it had to. This 1904 newspaper article talks about the fight in Carrick, then still part of Baldwin but not for long, between low taxes and the desire for public amenities like roads and firefighting.

It’s an interesting article in general. “It may be remarked right here that in the minds of most people who do not live on the South Side the mention of the name of Baldwin township brings up visions of Sunday beer drinking carnivals, baseball games law-breaking orgies of all kinds and mud roads, cows, roosters, dilapidated barns, country yawps, etc., adinfinitum. Many Pittsburgers, it seems never hear of Baldwin or read about it, either, unless it is in connection with a keg party, pounced upon by a constable or the county detective, or a baseball game that ends in a riot. Of late, however, such things have been rare in the township.”

A page about this sign, one of several temporary art projects by CMU’s Jon Rubin (Waffle Shop, Conflict Kitchen).

(ETA: Actually, while it’s on his blog, I’m not sure he’s the one who actually created the piece. More likely one of his students.)

my original idea was a distance shot (that i did with help from my buddy daryl — many thanks to him)

but i determined that the full shot was far too googleable (even if the billboards were cropped out) mostly due to the page steven mentioned above

new tag! sorry for the crappy quality. didn’t have much of a camera with me today.

was riding around and saw this fella milling about. i’m not sure i really want to grant you any clues, but i think if you’re paying attention, the vale will be lifted, and his location will be revealed.

Sorry, Stu. there have been times when I reloaded the page on my phone and it appeared that a tag hadnt been dropped yet. I will stop like 20 mins into a ride and check again and see that a new tag had in fact been posted nearly one hour prior; it just didn’t show up on my phone before I left the house.. In one instance, the tag was set and already picked up! I hope to have a new one posted After work tomorrow before the flock ride.

oooh, I know right where this one is. there are all kinds of other naughty bits to find if you look closely at adjacent parts of this building. bummed I missed the last tag as I did pedal right past it yesterday!

Not too long ago, the directional pylon on Allegheny Boulevard in Verona was set as the tag. At the time, I went out to photograph it’s counterpart, on Ohio River Boulevard in Emsworth, and found that it had been removed! Later I discovered that it had simply been relocated. The local newspaper, the Citizen, just did a nice story on the pylons, and the preservation effort for the Ohio River Boulevard pylon. I thought some of you might find it interesting: http://www.thecitizen.us/article/history-restored
