sheesh.
This is getting complicated.

The last post shows the plaque on the original tag (in Homestead).
The immediately preceding post is the new tag?

Yow.
What was that? Ice pellets?

More to the point, is this the (new) tag?

(Forbes & Murray)

Also, some kind of shindig across the street at the JCC:

please, let it not be a ba* mitzvah…

I believe the current tag is the photo Jon posted on Mar 4 2014 at 9:56am, and further clued in a post on Mar 8 2014 at 10:52am. The subsequent photos were merely comic byplay.

please, let it not be a ba* mitzvah…

I was thinking the same thing, but it turns out it was a fund raiser.

@Steven is exactly right.

ok, got it.
Good clues. But the first one now has me wondering about you.
(can’t get out there today, will try tomorrow; do post if you’re going for it.)

^ Something weird… I posted the image above yesterday and it disappeared somehow. Oh well, I may have deleted by accident.

We added the purple gloves (campV donated them).

We hope taking the picture doesn’t bring on a curse.

Four college-age-looking kids arrived at this tag location just moments after us. They were very patient and pleasant waiting for us to take our shots before they added their empty beer bottles. Seems this is a good spot for under age drinking.

The seated “person” in our photo could be called a troll, if you consider where she lives.

Oh, that’s a person?

I guess you can tell that I haven’t seen this yet, and have no idea where this is.

Troll under Charles Anderson Bridge, east end, Blvd of the Allies

So that’s where that is. I’d noticed that years ago, and thought it was a hobo encampment. Maybe it was, then. Kind of cool to know it’s there.

Go to Devon and Warwick – you’ll want to live there, it’s a beautiful hidden neighborhood.

YAT. This one under the Bloomfield Bridge, along Gold Way/ Melwood.

and congrats to Dan, campV and LindaP for actually climbing down to the sculpture; that’s steep. The sculpture is not credited, as near as I can tell. Anyone know more?

A good clue to the artist, Ahlir, ^that is bolted to the concrete pad, next to the troll.

Also, kind of interesting – there’s a birds nest under the left leg of the troll.

So you can see him from the front… well sort of the front. That was as far around the front as I could go. And yeah, it was steep and high above Skunk Hollow. Climbing around there was exhilarating, actually.

Fastest tag pickup in a month and a half. Coincidentally, the last fast tag pickup was near that spot, on Gold Way.

The Tag:

Your Clue:
Standing betwixt biscuits and buses, we all gaze wistfully towards…
the Boulevard.

This Photo:
It’s what’s’all is called a “perturbed image”. But all I did is run it through the Lomo filter in Picasa. Looks a whole lot better than that original I took.

Ah, that actually helps me figure out where to look. Now, if I could only drag myself out of bed at 4:30 a.m. to ride from the North Hills to that area with enough time to get my butt back downtown for work at 8am, I might have a shot at it. All assuming, of course, that I know where to go, which I still don’t, really.

That looks like the color scheme of a Home Depot in the background.

Ahlir

Private Message

Mar 27 2014 at 4:22pm #

Hm. I thought that was a pretty major clue. So, let’s try this again.

1) That is not a Home Depot. Though, actually, there’s one less than a mile away.

2) I cruised by on that ol’ Google and discovered something interesting: the giraffe used to be somewhere else.

Tell me if you want the hints to stop …

Nice. I use that route regularly to bypass the annoying ELB/Penn intersection (esp. now, given the BS2 construction).

Biker Tip: the pedestrian crossing button at Penn will trigger almost immediately.

NBD, but tagged before (551).

Well, not quite.
551 is the elephant, which is still on the Penn Ave side of the development (and is now facing away from the factory building). The giraffe used to be in front, but now it’s next to the cow/bull/? thing in the back. Someone must have had it in for the long neck…

Fun Fact: Nabisco Animal Crackers never included a giraffe, I think for obvious reasons.

I’m waiting to see a trombone next to the menagerie. Why a trombone? In Meredith Wilson’s musical “The Music Man”, there’s a scene early in the show citing the demise of traveling salesmen (the players in that scene) as deriving from the Uneeda Biscuit, hence making the cracker barrel obsolete. Uneeda Biscuits were made in what became the old Nabisco (National Biscuit Company) factory. Later in the play, Professor Harold Hill goes on to sell a lot of brass musical instruments and sing the song “76 Trombones”.

You knew all that, right?

Steven

Private Message

Mar 28 2014 at 3:52pm #

Not the Uneeda/Nabisco Factory connection; neat! But it’s Willson, two L’s.

Pittsburgh Filmmakers has an exhibit of photographs of faded building signs all over town in their Melwood gallery. One of them advertises Uneeda Biscuits. Some of the signs pictured there have been tags.

Jon, I just moved the Bakery Square tag on the map to near its eastern corner. If that’s still not right, please feel free to move it. (Log in to Google, go here, click page 4 at the bottom of the scrolling list, click Edit, drag the marker, click Save then Done.)

Giraffe got moved. So map is correct — it was there. And the current tag is correct — it’s a different place.

We had a blast picking up the giraffe tag, then we couldn’t come up with an idea for a good new tag… So here’s a sorta’ lame tag. Your orders are to march out and grab it.
