Martin Luther King Warren K. Branch Park

loc: 40.439663, -79.973528

The clue is a quote from MLK.
WKB was a private who fought in WWII.

That was quick!

I was curious who was Warren K Branch. Google finds this, but is it the same Warren K Branch? What’s his Pittsburgh connection? http://www.ww2enlistment.org/index.php?page=directory&rec=1089877

Good point. Sorry about jumping to conclusions re WKB.
Oddly, there’s not much on the web about this person. But I did find this OCR from the Aug 28, 1948 Pittsburgh Courier:

To (as Editor: I am writing In regards to .”Dark Laughter.” I think It is hold back to aa up and com ing group of people. It portrays all of the simple things expected of our race. I would like to sug gest a comlo short that will boost the race and not picture them splitting verbs. CORP. WARREN K. BRANCH Tampa, Fla.

The warm weather led me to take a ride
And drop a tag beyond the South Side
A race car builder owns this place
His habits and Industry let him set the pace
On the all neighborhoods ride he took us around
And when we got here we had a chance to settle down

Actually, it’s not the polo court, that’s in the same park, but down the hill next to the baseketball court. These are the newly refinished tennis courts, and they don’t want us playing polo or people playing street hockey there. And that’s ok, we have another court for that.

Oh, so tempting. I can see it from where I work. If I hadn’t gotten in so late this morning, I might be tempted to run out and get it right now.

Abandoned (Orthodox) church, corner of Reed and Vine in Uptown.
loc: 40.440194, -79.983884

Postscript:
This is (originally) St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church, built 1903–1910. Bonus fact: it’s apparently on the PHLF list of Historic Landmarks. But I don’t get the name. Russian Orthodox and Greek Catholic are two distinct religions. A (contemporary) source identifies it as Russian Orthodox. Maybe at some point it got sold to those Catholics…

It was a nice day so I went for a ride…
Anyway here’s where I ended up, still inside the city limits but just.
Snapped at 4:26pm. To get you in the mood try

Looks like rain until maybe Thursday. I won’t do clues until then.
If you just totally know where this is and just lost track of your rain gear, post.

I went out looking for it yesterday, unsuccessfully, but got to spend some time in some amazingly wild country that I never knew existed. Then today I figured it out. But need better weather to pick it up.

Great!

I had hoped it would a nice Sunday + great weather sort of day for a tag hunt… I don’t know where you went, but I like this tag area, lots of cool stuff to see.

I have a hunch I know where it is, but it’s 20 miles from the house and 10 from where I work.

@ejwme, where are you these days? I think this is right down-up the street from your house.

This is mildly OT, but if you’re participating in the “National Bike Challenge”, note that we have a Tag-O-Rama team. It’s open to everybody. You don’t have to be a player or anything else (well, other that a bike rider I guess). Go to their website to find out more, or check out the NBC thread that’s currently running on this board.

https://nationalbikechallenge.org/

If you use Endomondo or MapMyRide you can connect to the NBC and your data will be uploaded automatically.

Tag-O-Rama had a team least year and we did pretty well. I just checked and we’re already number one in Piitsburgh!!! (fine print: this is only the first day of the NBC and it’s still early in the day.)

It’s not visible on Streetview but nicely visible from the satellite. https://goo.gl/maps/o9e8a
BTW the wild area I ended up exploring while looking for this tag was the woods next to Allegheny River Boulevard. If you go through the parking lot right here you can climb up a hill and see some incredibly empty areas wedged between some suburbs and the golf course.

Ahlir

Ah, sorry about that.
I was hoping that the “just inside the city limits” clue would preclude people going out to Verona.
No longer a follow-up clue: “if you start hearing this song, you’ve gone too far”.

713 staircase streets in the city, but only a couple that look like that. Sounds like I’m going to have to get creative on my way into work next week, if nobody else knows exactly where this is.

Boy, do I wish I’d gotten a copy of Bob Regan’s spreadsheet when I had the chance. Which was Sept 8, 2000, at Cal.U., where we each gave presentations on our GIS projects. The steps research was his. This was before he wrote his book.

Mine was about signal capture before/after the GPS dithering was turned off May 2, 2000. So, hey, that’s 14 years to the day since accurate GPS signals have been available to Joe Citizen.

Study your Greeks, both writers and deities. OK, maybe Roman, but if Greek would be hard to miss.

@ahlir: “Ah, sorry about that.”
Not a problem. Since I achieved tag-hegemony I’ve been a bit more relaxed about the whole thing. I knew the tag was in the Pittsburgh city limits, but didn’t look at the map for Pittsburgh’s boundary, thinking it probably extended to Verona. I was happy to discover that canyon.

Diana, raining arrows down upon Homer, Spring Hill.
loc: 40.462498, -79.989012

Hymn 27, Homer:
I sing of Artemis,
whose shafts are of gold,
who cheers on the hounds,
the pure maiden,
shooter of stags,
who delights in archery,
own sister to Apollo with the golden sword.
Over the shadowy hills and windy peaks
she draws her golden bow,
rejoicing in the chase,
and sends out grievous shafts.

(Diana ~= Artemis)

a new tag!

No more climbing! This little sucker is right downtown.

You should be able to get it today, I think. But early tomorrow morning you’ll probably need either an all-areas pass, a number, or $90 for the VIP Package.

StuInMcCandless

I looked all around downtown for over an hour. I found four Toynbee tiles I didn’t know existed, but I didn’t find this. Guess I’ll have to try again on Monday!

Steven

I assume those are the same four tiles in the 2006 PG article about them: Oliver and Smithfield (two), Smithfield and Forbes, Forbes and Ross. The upside of our relaxed paving schedule, I guess. We’ve lost 2 of 6 to repaving since they first appeared downtown about 20 years ago.

There are a bunch that say 2012, including a couple on Blvd of the Allies. I messed up on a tag pick-up just a few months ago involving one of the newer ones.

If this is a Toynbee, I have not researched it. In any event, I walked the bike through the marathon’s VIP areas and and rode up and down various streets and Point State Park but did not see it.

Now that I’m seeing the image on a nice big desktop screen and not my iPhone, I can see that it’s on old concrete, so it’s one that’s probably been there quite a while.
