An interesting dilemma…

Nope, no problem at all. Well, yes, the flat tire is a problem, but I had no problem finding this tag!

Smithfield at Forbes, Downtown.

Uh, sorry to say stu, but that’s not the right Toynbee tile. Notice the details, it’s different.

Oh crap, it’s not the same one! The tag drop does not have the red patch underneath. The one at Smithfield & Forbes does.

This tag is still open, folks!

(I’m on a bus headed home, the bike has a flat & is locked up downtown. My chances of trying again are zero.)

I’m fascinated by Toynbee tiles, I remember seeing them when I moved here in 1989 and I find it hard to believe they haven’t been paved over. Really? Smithfield hasn’t been repaved since the late 80’s?

^Yeah, RR, I can barely believe they haven’t been paved over, scraped off by salt trucks or worn out by heavy daily traffic. I want them to stay forever.

Read more. Just Google Toynbee tiles, like RR says, it is fascinating.

The tagged one, I believe.

^ Correct, Smithfield and Oliver. And by the way, you can see them on street view too.

ok, I think this should be a reasonably easy one, provided you look up, now and then, on your commute into town.

Near a spirit forest
I came upon this road
Its name is quite a misnomer
As my journey showed

Happy Thanksgiving!

Is this it?

Industrial highway

Ted

Yes! Fairywood is a strange place, and that road is neither a highway nor industrial.

I’d been meaning to tag that, which is how I recognized it, but I couldn’t see your photo well enough when I was outside to tell if it was the right place.

Nerds and dramats
May find common ground
In solving this puzzle,
If puzzle be found.
Or perhaps business majors
Could add up the numbers
To some large sum
And know in their slumbers
Is it just art?
Perhaps there’s a clue
In the backwards quote
On the wall next to.

Many years ago the “industrial highway” above was used as the region’s illegal drag strip every Sunday night at around 8:00 p.m. I heard some crazy stories about street racing at that place, including a driver losing control and ending up upside-down in the creek, superbike guys who had no idea what they were doing riding wheelies, etc. The craziest one I heard was about a guy who brought down a Camaro SS on a trailer, backed it off started it up. The engine immediately caught fire and burned the whole front of the car the ground; they winched it back onto the trailer while it was still smoking and left, all in about 7 minutes from arrival to their unceremonious departure. Anyway, carry on.

I misjudged the speed of the DD ride today, arriving at the top of Tesla and wondering why no one was there. Did I get there too late? No, apparently. A gentleman from West Virginia drove and started a conversation. He was up here with a couple of cyclists doing the ride. We talked. He said that the people were maybe an hour behind. Eventually he said he was off to get a sandwich at a Rite-Aid he spotted somewhere down below (does Right-Aid do prepared food? I know they’re slowly turning into a corner grocery store, but anyway). Eventually I got my (maybe not-so) smartphone to load up the GPS trace one of the riders was broadcasting. Sadly her battery (or something) gave out just past Sycamore. What to do? I started to get chilled (what with the sweating and all). I rode off towards home, turning left on Frank. Yikes. Now I know why these races climb up, instead of down. Though come to think of it, this town is just so totally ripe for an urban downhill race…
But anyway, I feel like I’m getting off topic. Or did I just commit one of those dreadful thread hijacks? Sorry, my bad.

Here’s the next tag:

I apologize, but I’m not feeling all that poetic today, nor do I want to take a chance on song lyrics. So, um, here’s your

clue

And in a hat-tip to the DD: no climbing for this one.
(Well, hardly.)

So it’s called “Kraus Campo”, cool. I was introduced to this on the Carnegie International bike ride. I had no idea it was there. My son Peter thinks it has a puzzle-like quality, and I agree. If this was Myst, there would be something in the arrangement of the numbers that would give you a clue on how to unlock something else that would, eventually, let you win the game.

Hmmm, yeah, it’s a not-so-new tag. This one has been set before (we just plain didn’t look in advance to see if this had been used). Oh well, we have no other tag shot and no plans to get back out in the next 24 hours so it’ll have to do.

Our shot is tighter, giving far fewer clues to the location than the original tag.

He who set the original tag picked up a tag of mine immediately before he set the original.

Now I’m setting a tag having just picked up a tag from he who set the original tag of my not-so-new tag.

We need a few new taggers.

Set with LindaP

Recognized those hills immediately (and that mortar)…
I had to get in a bit earlier today so didn’t pick it up.

I’m happy to snooze for a day or two, in case a player who’s not Type-A wants to pick it up. (Well, I suppose as long as the other Type-As agree.)

hm, no takers so far. This can’t be that obscure, can it?

Unless someone is planning to swoop down on this one sometime soon, let me propose a group pickup. If you’ve been meaning to get a tag but haven’t been able to lately, this could be the opportunity.

If you are interested, post. I can be at the (library) corner of Murray & Forbes at (say) 5:15pm and we can proceed from there. I’ll be the one wearing a helmet.

Hmmm, no group, eh?

Well how about this clue… the original tag location was set by the second in this sequence. Find the sequence, find the tag:

ok, I’m inclined to go pick it up tomorrow morning and replace it with something else I have in mind (though not necessarily more obvious).

I can ride by Forbes&Murray, or not. It will have to be ~7:30am. So please post if you’re in. We’d manage to get back there by 8:30am.

This is taking too long. I’m seriously going to bruce bb, take the tag somewhere else, and drop it, if this keeps going on.

for the record, i blew out a tyre in the snowstorm friday night, had plans saturday am & so didn’t get it fixed until saturday evening, and, oh yeah, there was another fucking snowstorm sunday afternoon during which it was advised people stay off the roads, on top of which I was busy most of the afternoon.

now that I’m finally leaving work, i could go set a new tag, except that the same three people have something like 13 out of the last 15 pickups, so who even gives a fuck anymore?

New week, new tag. New pavement, semi-new handrail, less-new theatre… and if you’ve picked up a tag recently, I’d suggest leaving this one for a new player.

temper temper…

I agree that I’d be nice to see more variety in the tags set. But one condition would be that at least some tags are easy to spot. It’s ok to have ones challenging the obsessive cyclers who’ve pretty much ridden along all the streets around. But it’s also nice to have ones that lots of people can spot.

For my part I’ve been trying to alternate “interesting” and obvious tags. Maybe that helps. Offering to lead folks to a pickup is also a nice idea.

oh, did I mention it yet? Relax.
But we do want to keep the wheels rolling.

Ahlir

I agree. At this point “picked up a tag recently” is beginning to apply to a smaller and smaller number of people…
