Pseudacris, I think you’re right. The humps look similar to the ones in one of a photo here, where they were used for highway landscaping. Maybe that ties in with the location clue too.

I would tend to agree that these are probably retaining wall blocks. That’s fresh earthwork at the back of the lot…

If you read the clue carefully (and if I wasn’t totally opaque), there’s only one street in town that might fit the description (at least I’m pretty sure).

^Ditto that^

Welcome to tagging!

Cool shot. The red light illuminating the fence and bike frame looks cool against the grey/blue monochromatic background.

Nice, amyg.

That should have been the tag photo: mysterious gray hemispheres, marching off into the distance… yinzer daleks on the move.

I had a feeling it was on Fifth, from the clue, but am now glad I didn’t go out looking for it (also, it was really cold). Great to have a new player.

I figured West Carson: one way inbound, construction, retaining wall. Fortunately I didn’t go look.

Wash Boulevard is not fun to ride
But come ’round this way, and you’ll find
a slower pace on this Boulevard
with a magnolia tree that’s not in a yard
You’ll see the flowers at Winter’s end,
while cruising through the lovely East End.
Where this island sits, there’s a bike lane nearby
the Busway too, now give it a try.

N. Linden and Thomas Blvd in Point Breeze:

loc: 40° 27.240′, -79° 54.548′
Not to be confused with the magnolia at McPherson, a block away. It didn’t have any snow either.

I was going to say something about how it was shaping up to be a beautiful day for a ride, with the temp already in the fifties and the clouds breaking up… But now it’s raining; complete with lightning and thunderclap. Ah well.

Next Tag

This is A21. Even though it’s off by 10.
If you know about A22, A23 and A24, this should be easy.

I became quite the wet wharf rat looking for this. No joy tho. :-(

I’ll come up with a bona fide clue by evening.
But you are correct in believing that wetness matters.

Still no clue on how to clue this out.
I was out that way today after work, thinking that maybe I could get clever and get a snap of A24 for the clue. You know: a clue within a clue that might itself have been a tag and, uh, could then have turned into a whole meta-rama thing, full moon, etc.

But try as I might, I could not find A24! Disaster.

I was so sure that the A numbers aligned with streets… But I didn’t give up. Back home I took to the Google. No trace.
I did find this further up the street:

Anyone you know? (Yes, the lights were green.)

Anyway, here the clue:
The object has a bar-code sticker. I didn’t scan it but the human-readable bit says “ALCOSAN”.

New Tag (admittedly, I didn’t move the sticks far)

As a self identifying hipster, it’s nice to see even more bike shopping options in my zone.

New Tag:

cryptic clue :
FUEL→ for thought.

uninformative clue :
Do not drink this water, we have had our way with it.

pointlessly convoluted clue :
So yesterday I had this great idea for a visual clue but it involved riding out to A24, which I had the opportunity to do. I could not find it. I did see an object that was more or less the right thing on the Streetview but it was distorted, in that crappy-stitching way all too common in Streetview. So I went by there again today: the object really was gone. The (rather extensive) tract on which it bordered is being redeveloped (a warehouse was torn down and something new is going up, probably another warehouse). You know, sometimes you feel like you should always take snaps of interesting stuff, for no reason, just because it looks interesting. But you’re lazy. Then later you regret not doing it? This was one of those times. I even remember that I had then roamed around some trying to find the A25, with no luck. Which brings us back to today’s tag. If you look closely you will see that this object is an A-20Z. You will find several A20’s around there, depending on the day of the week and on your scrupulousness with respect to No Trespassing signs. As tag, this one is specific. And it’s completely accessible, and not just for the MTB crowd.

NOT A FIND. CONTINUE LOOKING I seem to have found A61. I don’t understand how Alcosan number these things! Everything from the Casino down to Heinz on the North side of the Ohio and Allegheny are EVEN numbered (in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s). Then suddenly, there’s A61.

I know I’ve seen a map of all the outflows, but I couldn’t find it last night. My hunch is that it’s on the city side of the Allegheny (the “A” is a strong hint), but I hardly ever go along there. My chances of getting over there in daylight in the next 48 hours are zero.

I’ve been a player of Tag-o-Rama
I’ve been to Fineview
I’ve been to City view
Keeps me searching for the next new tag
And it’s getting cold

It’s probably up in the shrubbery somewhere.

I actually passed by this (in a car, my bike’s in the shop) today and thought about being a complete smartass and claiming the tag by getting Hubby to take a pic of me in front of this pole while I pretended to be on an invisible bike.

uh-oh.

Now what? I think it’s either a re-snap of this tag or my previous tag is live again… technically the latter since it’s been 36h. On the other had it took a good while for anyone to notice the problem.

Y’all have fun.

I’m pretty sure I know where to find it but I’m out of town, again…

Well, it is the new tag. My bike is, indeed, up in the shrubbery. (Next to the benches.)

I was up at 6am this morning; hadn’t believed it when being told that today would have snow. Surely not that early! But I snoozed, and I losed…

The placard on the post displays a butterfly shape. This indicates a no-spray area (for herbicides); it’s a park after all (and one of the odder ones in the city).

Anyway, I like the new tag! But of course I’m compelled to note that the tagger pixilated the name of the establishment.
This is not right. I thought we had agreed that doctoring images was not ok (unless it included a fabulous sunset, if I correctly recall Stephen’s ruling on the last case).

Whinging? Perish the thought!
So let me add an (establishment related) clue:

And a version for the maybe impatient: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDL-gJmAniM

When Google’s camera last went through Gold Way/Melwood, the post that now shows a butterfly instead had a sign “THIS PLAY AREA HAS BEEN CLOSED” with the rest obscured by graffiti. I’m not sure if they meant the whole park, or an area within it.

We didn’t add a “doctoring images prohibited” rule last time, but I think it was frowned upon, and Austin Powers-style obscuring was encouraged instead. On the other hand, it’s COLD. Asking people to muck around for 15 minutes to create a perfect shot may be unreasonable.

I totally think obscuring names, addresses, etc. is Ok.

Ahlir

I stand chastened before the tribunal… and apologize yet again for complaining.

In my defense, I doubt it would take 15 min to find a shot in this case (or in any case). Besides, why would you want to spend time posing things? That’s boring. Take a bunch of snaps then just pick one that looks good. That’s what I do.

Anyhow, I’ll take all this as meaning that ToR has licensed the creation of perturbed images to augment its ongoing curation of found images contributed by the Pittsburgh bicycling community. Let’s see what happens.

Late comment and maybe I’m visually impaired, but “bike” – “benches” ? I see neither in the original Polish Hill tag. Can anyone point them out to me?

Steven

Private Message

Jan 27 2014 at 2:51am #

I think the benches extend to the right from the bottom right corner of the butterfly sign. There’s a hint of a round thing that could be a wheel leaning up against them, if you zoom in. I can’t see the frame, so I assume it’s either blending in really well, or made of transparent aluminum like Wonder Woman’s invisible plane.*

(* Take that, fictional universe!)

jonawebb

Steven has it right. The benches are up on the hill behind the butterfly sign. A nice place to sit and take in the view from Polish Hill in the summer, no doubt. And the bike is made of titanium so I guess it blends in.
My phone resolution was set too low — damn phone monkeys with the settings all the time.

new tag:

The name of the sculpture has the word “Steel” in it. (Yeah I know, about as useful a clue as “the guy on the ‘bent with a beard”; gimme a break, ok.) It looks pretty peaceful but the avenues around it are pretty nasty, if you’re a biker.
