Surely if a blind person can legally have a gun, they should also be able to operate a vehicle.

Are there any scientific studies showing riding while blind is dangerous?

I think as long as you are wearing a helmet it is prob ok.

Just noticed a small typo in my clue:

should have been

Sculpture in Mellon Park

The next tag will be a little past the 36 hr limit. I have to take the photo during the day Saturday morn.

One of Pittsburgh’s nomadic sculptures
Gloss:
Steel Cityscape was originally at the City-county building in 1978, then was in a park where the David Lawrence Convention Center is now by 1985. It was painted purple at one point! I haven’t been able to find any pictures of its purple state or any mention of why it’s not purple anymore.

Notes:
1) I happened to ride by there this evening on the way home from work (hey the weather was great, almost like summer; and I really needed a ride). Hardly any bike tracks in the park. This tag is next to what’s a well traveled East Liberty — points east bikeway. Where’s everyone?
2) Before snapping this one I checked up on Stephen’s Googl-a-Map to make sure I wasn’t duplicating an old tag remembered. I found two(!) earlier tags, of the other big piece in the park (exiled from the Squirrel Hill Library I now know). It’s the same piece, but in two different locations! Is this whole nomadic sculpture thing creepier that I figured? Paging George Romero! Or, uh, Tony Buba?

Still, I Ride
by Maya Campagnolou
You may run me off the road
With your two ton metal cage,
You may push me into the very dirt
But still, on my bike, I’ll ride.

Do my Spandex shorts upset you?
Do I make you feel weak inside?
‘Cause I need no oil wells pumping
Black gunk to move me as I ride.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
To the north and south and east and West,
Still I’ll ride.

Did you want to see me broken?
Scraped knees and injured eyes?
Collarbone broken and asymmetric,
Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my taking the lane offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got Shimano
Making parts in my backyard.

You may curse me from your driver’s seat,
You may cut me off at lights,
You may honk at me from feet behind,
But still, on my bike, I’ll ride.

Does my assertiveness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I ride like I’ve got titanium
Running down my arms and thighs?

Across the Commonwealth I ride
Up Pittsburgh’s steepest hills I ride
Passing near this tag on the GAP,
On the way to the Southside.
Though cold randonnée nights I ride
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear I ride
On the roads that the wheelmen made,
I am the dream and hope of every child with training wheels.
I ride I ride I ride.

across the street:That’s St. Francis.

I came down the Greys’ Bridge and thought I would ride back along the GAP trail. The bit past the Sandcastle was snowed up though with a few tire tracks through it. I got lazy and went back up the bridge. It looks to be warm enough in the next few days to next to melt what’s there.

next tag:

Sitting here at the computer, I now realize that I could have snapped a much more powerful tag—just across the street. I mean, like, literally.

Off-hand, I’m pretty sure that this place is not a blues bar.

sorry to take so long, and to leave yet another tag on my commute, after picking one up on my commute, but this is all i have time for:

NEW TAG!

every new bit of infrastructure deserves a tag at some point, though, right?

Shall I compare thee to a winter’s day?
Thou art more Loewly and more convenient.
Rough winds do shake the icy Mon,
And winter’s lease hath all too long a date.
Sometime too rough the Homestead bridge rides,
And often is 20 degree weather found;
And from every tire the air sometime declines,
By a flat, or a slow leak, unpumped;
But the game of Tag-o-Rama shall not fade,
Nor stop tagging bicycle infrastructure,
Nor shall death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,
So long as thou lookest out for cars.
So long as taggers play, and bikers ride,
So long lives this, and so shall riders glide.

It’s the weather that’s keeping anyone from picking this up, right? Or do you need another clue?

StuInMcCandless

A clue would help, but the weather would help more. I haven’t been anywhere outside my well beaten path to and from my bus each morning & evening. Three days in a row will go by & I haven’t even been on the board.

I have a pretty good idea where this is, but until the weather breaks some, I’m not likely even to get on a bike, let alone explore.

You’re missing the fun… this morning I biked down past a pickup truck parked to block off the road on a hill, my rear tire skipping a little as I braked on the ice, then past the guys waiting by the pickup truck at the bottom of the hill, their mouths agape. Being able to brake with just one wheel is a big advantage.
But as to a clue, I think you’ll find it a kick to pick up this tag as you catch up on the Oscar-nominated flicks.

Not sure I’ll have the time to fetch this one…
But let me note that of the 5 or so tags within a couple of blocks of there, I’ve set or picked up 4.
Sigh.

A very pleasant ride from McCandless, more riding on this one trip so far than I rode in all of February prior to this.

New tag!

[I'm having trouble getting the photo to appear. I think this Twitter link should get you to it, though.]

As we get closer to springtime, be careful not to get burned out on environmental issues.

Note: You should walk your bike to the exact spot.

(I opted not to take a selfie, despite the graffitist’s suggestion. My rack will have to do.)

Note from a neutral observer – I think pixelating some identifying material might be OK – if you at least point out that part of the pic is pixelated.

There was case once, with a Frick Park sign where I had mentally ruled out the location becuse I thought it was just a fuzzy log, not a pixelated sign.

My camera crapped out just as I took the photo. In desperation I used my video camera to capture the moment.

BTW, the Carpatho-Rusyn Church was a particularly prescient and apropos tag, the way things worked out.
The long and winding road that leads to your door
Will never disappear
I’ve seen that road before it always leads me here
Leads me to your door

Waddaya think, guys, do we believe that the old building in Jon’s marginal video is the same one I tagged?

Steven

Private Message

Mar 4 2014 at 8:23pm #

Sure, assuming the place you tagged was in fact the Carpatho-Rusyn Church. (Though it seems to be technically the Carpatho-Rusyn Cultural Center, formerly the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, and in Munhall, not Homestead. Unless there are multiple similar-looking Carpatho-Rusyn cathedrals in the area.)

jonawebb

For those of you who don’t know, Paul has made a career out of noticing (and fixing) subtle defects in rendering. So I imagine he found my crappy video of the Carpatho-Rusyn cultural center profoundly offensive.
Still, Munhall? Really? We need three boroughs (Whitaker, Munhall, and Homestead) between the Rankin and the Homestead High-Level bridge? Plus another, West Homestead, on the other side? When does the madness end?

Steven

Surely you’re not saying the concerns of the western half of the Petco in the Waterfront are precisely aligned with the concerns of the eastern half of the Petco in the Waterfront? Of course they need separate representation! To have it otherwise would invite anarchy, madness, human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together! Hey, wait.

I think Jon’s video proves that he photographed his bicycle in the snow leaning against an old stone building, in the dark. Does it demonstrate any more than that? We do not see the top of the building his bicycle was leaning against. Would a neutral observer, shown my photo and Jon’s video in a “lineup” recognize them as photos of the same building? Maybe Jon just pedaled down to some building at Murray & Phillips and shot a bad video. Got some friend to put on a gorilla suit and make grunting noises in the woods…

Today would be a good day to pick up my tag, don’t you think? So here’s another clue
A famous chef is giving a kick
Starting a place you can sit right down
And have a meal while visiting this town
