The National Bike Challenge

Over 30,000 people rode 12 million miles in this free program May 1 to August 31, 2012. The warm-up for the 2013 Challenge will begin in March 2013.

They’ve zeroed out the points, fyi.

There appears to be no maximum team size this year… weird

nice.
i missed most of the points for last year’s overall because i was tracking miles in a differnt app. :(

i need to sign up for this tonight, lousy work computers blocking login.

I didn’t do this last year, I’ve heard of it, but I know nothing about it, really. I read the FAQs, but I’m not sure why I should keep track of miles this way – does it help bikepgh.org?

Ah, and there are categories of teams: small (1-10 riders), medium (11-99), and large (100+). This will make the team competition quite a bit different this year

What TeamDecaf said above. When it comes to group rides and other bicycle activities I’m somewhat of a “joiner”, glad to help out and do my bit. I just need to know what the purpose and/or goal is. The web page for this thing is about as hard-info-free as you can get.

Lou was in charge of this – but I think it just shows how active the Pgh bike community is compared to other cities in the challenge (although unscientific) & gives them another piece of info when dealing with policy people of influence. There was also a free beer incentive from OTB which was way cool of them to do. Not sure if it’s happening this year though

The free beer from OTB was definitely cool, didn’t they have a party with some awards too? I’m glad they got rid of the team size restriction because that was a gigantic pain in my and my coworkers collective asses.

But, basically it’s trying to get you to use endomondo.

For me, last year’s challenge was an effective way to get me to ride more. They awarded one point for every mile pedaled, but 20 points for every day you rode at all. Since my typical daily mileage is roughly five miles, each day I rode got me — and the team — that 25 points. If I managed to bike all the way into the city, that would get me/us 35 points, 45 if I made it the whole way in and back.

Sure, those high mileage cyclists racked up the points, but just by riding at all, I contributed quite a bit to Team Tag-o-Rama Getters.

That was pretty much my experience too, Stu. The desire to rack up points for the team made it a heck of a lot easier to crawl out of bed and hop on the bike in the morning. And it also encouraged me to take a lot more short trips to the corner market instead of wussing out and driving.

Heck, I was out for three months with a broken wrist and I still manged to hit the platinum level. So it’s not hard.

Free beer?

apparently i’m more competitive than i’d previously realized. i enjoyed getting the points–and, perhaps since i didn’t have a real cohesive team, did so really more for myself–and especially enjoyed seeing how i ranked in the city. while I’ve always enjoyed riding, I never thought of myself as a great, frequent, or hardcore rider, so like comparing yourself favourably to a famous athlete or celebrity, i particularly enjoyed seeing myself apparently doing well against names I recognized from the board or from Bike Pittsburgh…

(the free beer was a nice thought, but apparently i need to go to otb more–I’d only gotten two before they quit taking them.)

Just signed up, and hot damn, already #20 in the city. And I’ve barely even ridden for two months…

did the thing start for reals or is this the “pre-game” thing again where they’re going to reset everyone to 0 in a month or two?

i’d be more excited about doing it again if they’d fix the bug I and a bunch of other people have harped on where if you import from garmin you have to go fix every entry individually to cycling/transportation. not sure if I want to deal with that again.

buffalo buffalo

Private Message

no idea about the garmin issue, i no longer use one, but they’re definitely doing the warm-up-period thing again. challenge starts for real on 5/1, as last year.

Since there is no size limit this year, I have Team Tag-o-rama-2013 listed as an open team so anyone can join if they want to. I’m not sure how the competition between teams is going to be handled, but we might as well get as big as we can – I’m sure we’ll still kick ass no matter what.

TeamDecaf

@Marko82 – I signed up, but something doesn’t seem quite right. I never had the opportunity to choose a team (I don’t think so , anyhow, unless it was when they asked for your company name???)

Is there a way once signed up as an individual to get on the tag-o-rama team? I can’t find it anywhere. Sorry to be dumb, but it’s just not apparent to me. Grrr.

Anyone figured out a good android workflow for tracking rides? I prefer the google my tracks app to endomondo but exporting and importing in endomondo doesn’t seem as trivial as it should/could be.

Hmm, workflow? I just use the Endomondo app. (Some have talked about battery issues, but I haven’t had any problems…)

mattjackets

I’d really like to join the tag-o-rama team this year, but despite having 14 members currently, it says it’s full & limited to 10 members!? This challenge really gets me out there….1138 points for this year so far :)

So, Marko if there’s something you can do to add me that’d be great. Maybe the team got set to “small” somehow.

EDIT: never mind, the endomondo profile of the team has the 10 member restriction, but not the search/join interface on the campaign site.

Good to see with hardly a blip of promotion that 65 people have already signed on. We’ll start promoting it soon.

The new team structure throws a curve to our team award category from last year. We’re thinking of asking PGH peeps to keep teams to 10, but that sounds like it was frustrating to some. If we expand the team competition to include the new sizes we need to figure out how to handle the awards, perhaps an award for each category. We’ll figure it out.

The Challenge is great advocacy. Your participation definitely helps!

considering that right now there are 4 teams it may be easier to have awards for the 6 people that aren’t on Tag-o-rama. ;)

I’m trying that, it presents me with a “join” link, I click the link, and then it rejects me with a message that says,
Someone wants you to join this team but there’s a max of ten members

and yet there’s 15.

if anybody can identify a different path I’d appreciate it. cheers, V.

BTW pittsburgh…. Cleveland is getting serious

They’re coming after our Rust Crown hard – and working with Rustbelt Wielding on ACTUALLY fabricating a crown for the champion that they’re ACTUALLY expecting will reside in Cleveland…

Its time to step up.

Communities > Restrict to “Class I only”

We’re on page 1 (third, in fact*):
135 – Pittsburgh, PA – 133.95 p.
293 riders, 36,300 miles

They’re on page 2:
543 – Cleveland, OH – 24.55 p.
137 riders, 6,776 miles

* behind Lincoln, NE, and Madison, WI.

(I wonder if there must be some kind of bizarre weighting going on, where areas with fewer people get bonus points or something. How does a tiny town with one rider marking 250 miles have over 3000 points?)

(ETA: Oh, there it is: “unit: points/1000 persons” I guess that sort of explains it.)
