hey @pearmask, I heard that our current totals get zeroed at midnite tonite (or some such).

Good luck keeping up…

(At the same time, I’m a bit annoyed that we can’t join multiple teams. They could divvy up the point to make it fair, or something.)

I just signed up (again), I’m looking to reclaim my 10th place spot.

20 points a day just for trying? It’s sure gotten me out on the bike more.

I do try to make my trips purposeful, not just riding around the block for the sake of riding the bike.

Since I was up and on the board right at midnight (bogus timezone notwithstanding) I got to wondering how many miles I could actually ride in 24 hours. I thought about just riding the river paths (didn’t someone do a “Century to Nowhere” that way?), although I’d worry about how safe that would be (for myself and other trail users) after fatigue really set in… the oval would be safer but that would get really boring. Could be fun. Could lead to horrible saddle sores. Could be fun?

I actually rode just now hoping to (very briefly) sneak onto the national leaderboard in a high position and broadcast my brief coup here. It did have another purpose. Saw a very bad motorcycle accident (a couple minutes after it happened, not the live event) on my way home and couldn’t really sleep. Trying to wind down.

Anyways, my (very slow) ride shows on my workouts (though the GPS didn’t catch, bummer), but I don’t show on there. Mostly folks with asian names at this point, which would make perfect sense except it’s a national competition that should’ve started EST and overall 38 minutes ago AND the point totals don’t make sense for half an hour of riding AND that I’ve seen so far none of their rides were May 1 (yes, I did make sure not to select “warmup as the period).

I guess if you try and kinda sorta cheat the system you can’t complain if it isn’t fair.

If it’s anything like last year there’s a long lag before the leaderboard updates (even longer than the “N minutes ago” would imply, IIRC…).

Although I don’t know how to explain the ones at the top – maybe it’s not limited to the US (although then I’d expect a lot more people on the leaderboard).

I usually wait until the end of the day to log my miles but I logged early to get on the board. This morning I was as excited as a little schoolgirl.

We should plan for a victory ride to Cleveland to collect our crown. I might be assuming too much, but some advance planning might help with motivation. Once you are over the ridge above the Ohio River it is a really nice ride. Early October should have some decent weather. My good friend is one of their chief organizers/promoters so we might be able to get hosted somewheres. And they would definitely be buying the beer. Just sayin’

And you could get back via AMTRAK.

I think I need to print the Tag O Rama team standings. I am almost certainly never going to be in the top 5 ever again!

@P-Rob we could make it a randonneur, maybe, with enough advance planning. It would be cool to do it as a 200K / 400K choice starting at Neville Island. I really don’t know how much work is involved in setting one of these things up (especially, does someone have to pre-ride it? Because I’m not doing that.) But I will look into it a little…

From Edomondo Pgh page:

Pedal for Pints at OTB Bicycle Cafe
April 15 at 11:28

Now that you’ve joined the challenge you can Pedal for (free) Pints at OTB Bicycle Cafe in the South side – the official 2013 Pittsburgh Bike Challenge Headquarters. Once the challenge officially starts on May 1, you can redeem every medal you earn for one free drink. Invite friends to join your team and you can strategize over pints or pop at OTB. 100 points = 1 drink!

BTW does anyone have a contact in Cleveland who would know when they are planning to have a ceremony or event to acknowledge the end of the challenge? It would be great if we could time the randonneur so as to show up at this event and collect our crown. I’ve searched on the web and can’t find any contact email though I did leave a message on one of the sites.

Funny thought occurred to me just now – in any other rivalry the loser would probably have to deliver the prize to the winner. Cyclists just take it for granted that the winner gets to take the long ride.

Starting logging my miles today. I would have benefited greatly by moving the start date to yesterday, or until the weekend. I did 40 miles yesterday, and I’ll be stuck in an airplane for the next two days =(.

I know all I probably need to do is read back through this thread but I will ask anyway. Do I log every mile I ride, or just my commuting miles? I ride everyday and some of it is for no go reason other than to ride. Does that count?

The categories are (commute, transport, sport, mountain biking), so pretty much anything.

FYI the cards are at OTB, picked mine up today.

I’m not one to insight violence, but destroy seems like a good word right now. It is good that we fight with the love of cycling rather than anything else.

We’re off to a fun start.

Madison, WI looks like the one to beat (they also won the warmup in the 200,000+ category).

In raw figures time of writing, we had 219 riders who logged today, Madison 199. They, 2,655 miles logged, us 2,468. So we should be ahead on total points, just scaled to population Madison is kicking arse.

Anyways, this is the comparison I’m going to be watching. Cleveland… they have to show me something.

Well, got a flat halfway home. Had a spare tube and pump, but the tube was the wrong size for this bike. Had Park tools glue patches and patched the other tube, that lasted 1/2 mile (fyi glue patches suck ass and are useless, do not rely on them). Oh also needed to be home by 7:30 to get my daughter something to eat and then to cheer practice. Called my son to come rescue me in the car. Damn it’s nice to have a Plan D.
I’ve calmed down now and no longer feel like my skull is going to explode, but day one of the bike challenge sucked for me! Bleh. Try another day.

It is funny how Cleveland wants to make this an “us or them” kind thing. If I can help you in some way let me know. Can’t top OTB but I do fix bikes through Kraynicks. Drop me a line.

I heard back from Bike Cleveland. They want to have a press event in “the winning city” to award the crown. So nix on the idea of our riding to Cleveland to pick it up. They will drop it off here.

I’m sure some kind of riding event could be arranged.

byogman

Private Message

The real competition is Madison.

They look like they’re dominating but we are beating them in terms of number of riders with points, and total miles.

If we sign up more riders (they actually have a tiny edge on us there, we’re WAY short of the 1250 goal), that seems eminently doable, and I don’t see why we can’t challenge them for the overall crown.

ok, sorry, forgot I more or less posted the same thing last night.

Had a very zen ride this morning to check out the bald eagle’s nest, then a not quite so zen trip up Liberty from the point looking for where the green bike lane starts. Bailed early because I had to be in the office already. Will have to scout that one later I guess.

@edmonds59: I carry one of these patch kits. You can find them for around $2-4 at most bike shops. These patches with vulcanizing fluid (which is not the same as glue) have yet to fail me.

I don’t know what comes in the Park Tools kit, but I once tried to use the same patches from my patch kit with rubber cement (as recommended by a local shop) and the cement just wouldn’t hold the damn thing on. Vulcanizing fluid makes all the difference.

These were the little “self-adhesive” things, I prob shouldn’t even have called them glue. Basically heavy tape. Not even worth carrying.

That WESA article is great! Did anyone else hear it on the news this morning?

Cleveland’s abc network did this story > http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/cleveland_metro/Cleveland-and-Pitsburgh-vie-in-National-Bike-Challenge

Keep in mind we’re going against everyone in Cleveland’s MSA > http://www.endomondo.com/campaign/national?view=975 (but they still don’t stand a chance)

and I agree, we should set our sites on Madison. Though they’re in the perfect situation for this challenge; a population thats just a hair over 200,000 and the headquarters of the largest US bike company. But if every pittsburgh rider gets one friend to join, we’ll hit the 1,250 goal and the crown will be coming our way.

I’ve tried those patches, too. Never worked for me, either. Honestly, I don’t know why they make them.

I used http://www.treefortbikes.com/cat/0/693/Patch-Kits.html#navbar=pro___333222335837___693 and similar one from Thick Bikes. No problem on my road tires which I keep with 120-140 psi.

Talking with Bike Cleveland, it sounds like they’re interested in some sort of joint ride. Some of them are riding down for Pedal Pittsburgh. So maybe something will happen. I’m betting that it will be pretty obvious we’re winning more than 5 weeks before the end of the challenge (actually, it’s obvious now), so that gives us time to set a (relatively easy) 400K randonneur route.

Those park tool self adhesive patches seemed to be all the rage at Dirtfest last year by the casual rider crowd. When I got 3 flats on a borrowed demo bike, every patch I bummed off of other riders was one of these type (I left my patch kit in my saddle bag on the bike I left at the demo station). They seem to work fine on lower pressure tires, but If you’re breaking 60 PSI I would stick with vulcanizing solution and patches.

I seem to have a huge issue with flatting on demo mountain bikes. I’m checking everything myself before I leave with another bike. I ride 18 to 20 psi on my MTB on 2.55 tires and have only flatted once in 10+ rides or so.

It looks like current city ranking is based on miles per general (not biking) population.
Madison, WI — 237,000
Pittsburgh, Pa — 307,000
Cleveland, OH — 394,000
Or all miles are divided by 327, 302, and 394 correspondingly.

Madison, WI — 593 riders, Total distance logged 4,619. Endomondo rank 41.70 p, 4,619/237=19.49 — not even close to 41.70

Pittsburgh, PA — 575 riders, Total distance logged 4,604. Endomondo rank
19.05 p. 4,604/307=15.00. also not close to 19.05.

Cleveland, OH — 238 riders, Total distance logged 1,691. Endomondo rank 5.69. 1,691/394=4.29.

Hm, does anyone know how rank is calculated?
