@stefb: Funny that you say that. My buddy keeps telling me that I should tie a 4 foot long pool noodle to my bike to insure clearance!! I thought it sounded more like tying a target to my bike.

I also stopped by the grate- it is 28 inches wide, and fairly level with the road. The grate across the street has slid towards the curb leaving a narrow tire sized gap on the street edge. I did not see any chalk outlines or blood stains.

I also heard 2nd hand (or ear?) from someone who spoke with the CMU police who told them the cyclist was on the sidewalk and fell in front of the bus.

You can see some of the other utility covers in the street picture there. I know there have been wrecks caused when people were knocked off balance by a rapid succession of dips in the road caused by utility cover also in that general area of Forbes.

I seem to recall that grate having slid towards the curb within it’s metal frame. This would leave a single, long channel that could catch a tire. The gap was about two inches at the time.

I also paid a visit today and this does not seem to be the case at this site, but around the corner on Fifth Avenue, near WQED and Central Catholic High School, there is a drain that is in that exact condition. I’ve 311’d it and gotten nowhere.
