“At 9 p.m. that day” Aug 2nd, “the road will close to outbound traffic from the West End Bridge to McKees Rocks”

Sounds like a good time to have a 10pm bike ride…

EDIT: Ooooo, and it’s a Friday too!

I was jsut signing on to post the news about the delay.

Marko, your friday night ride might have to wait for a week or two.

Y’know, I’ve been thinking about this. The main reason for having the road shut down is the bridge replacement over Chartiers Creek. I find it hard to believe they will have the entire road torn up the entire time of the project. Chances are excellent that with outbound traffic shut down altogether, two-way bike traffic might be a lot easier to accomplish.

As we aptly demonstrated during the 31st Street Bridge project, and a couple summers earlier on the California Ave bridge replacement, it is entirely possible to do major bridge work while maintaining bike traffic at all times.

We should be using this long-term closure as an opportunity to establish large amounts of bike traffic along that corridor.

Hey, here might be something to do a group ride to on the temporarily bike friendly W. Carson, check out the Rocks:

And look, on Friday 8/30 at 8 pm, The Marcels! Who knew?
If anyone actually wanted to do a ride out there I would be happy to scout the rideability of the route in advance.

Ed, it’s ridable and very easy to get to there. One of the PMTCC regular rides goes W.Carson ride over Chartiers Creek, right on Rivers Ave, left on Robb Str and intimidate right on Helen Str all the way to McKees Rocks bridge. We ride on W.Carson two abreast and taking full lane either as one group or two groups (fast group and slow group).

Oh, I meant specifically during the construction period, to be sure that it is indeed passable.

I suspect there will be a brief period from time to time when part of the corridor will not be passable. But not the whole thing, the whole time. Even when they have that bridge completely out, it will still be possible to ride up the outbound ramp on West Carson to the West End Bridge, cross the end of the bridge on a pedestrian crossing (you can do this, right?), then ride down the ramp to the (closed) street. I’m sure we’d have to wiggle around a big orange sign, and chances are good that milling and paving and whatever will be going on someplace. But we can wiggle around that, too, especially during off hours.

wait, is there another tunnel under the liberty ave ramps behind the Ft Pitt Museum, or is that supposed to be Portal Bridge?

There is a small pedestrian tunnel (if we are talking about the same place). I marked it as Tunnel #1.

Has anyone attempted to ride on West Carson since it was closed? I rode past there August 3 in the morning rain. There were some cops standing around near the corner. I wonder if they’re there to keep people off it. Is it usable?

I saw two people on bikes with trailers heading into the closed section during yesterday’s afternoon rush hour. I haven’t had a chance to check it out, myself.

The police I’ve seen have been working the lights.

I hope to be able to explore this situation on one of these early weekend mornings. Will post.

I drove West Carson from River Rd in the Rocks to Station Square. Aside from the road-closed signs by the West End Bridge that block passage, that’s just screaming for two-way bicycle traffic.

I rode it yesterday. There’s some trash, but I much prefer it to having cars try to squeeze by since the barricades now don’t let people cross the double yellow to pass.

How difficult is it to get from the downstream side of the West End Bridge to the open sidewalk upstream of it?

Hard. I don’t recall if they’ve rebuilt the downstream (McKees-Rocks-ward) corner the same way, but as I recall the upstream (Downtown-ward) corner has had a roughly thigh-high cement barrier installed, with the only gap at the crosswalk to inbound 51/60/South Main.

Can you get to the downstream staircase? Can you get to the upstream staircase? I don’t even care if I cannot cross West End Bridge traffic on foot to get to the upstream staircase. I’m OK with having to cross the river twice. I want to get to the downstream staircase, climb steps, cross river, use the pedestrian walkway on the north end of the bridge to get to the upstream sidewalk, ride back across the river, go down the upstream staircase, and continue along West Carson. Is that possible?

Even from the north end of the bridge, it’s easy to go down one staircase, ride one block, and end up on the North Shore Trail.

I’m not sure (I didn’t even know there were stairs there), I avoided the whole West End circle by ducking back into traffic and taking the right “ramp” that goes underneath the whole intersection.

Apparently this really inappropriately placed sign is so important that it needs to be placed on the sidewalk that is heavily used by bicyclists.

*It simply states “Route 51 closed, follow detour”.

Janie and I today biked closed part of W.Carson. We decided to check fi we can use inbound lane and ended up using one and later closed lanes. They can be used both ways for now. The only advise is to get to inbound lane a little bit before right bend (the one that about 150 yards before entrance to bridge) — you can see traffic better.

Stu – yes, what you want to do is possible.

You can access both staircases on the south end of the bridge – one upstream and one downstream. And both bridge walkways are passable – the upstream one now has a smaller sign to clear it for peds and bikes.

Too bad the Carson signs are still blocking everything.

Just quoting someone I knew…

My Penndot connection told me the road will not be torn up till Sept 4th.

So enjoy while it’s possible.

There will be a team out looking at the roadway for a couple of days this week. They should spot the signs on the sidewalk, and recommend their removal. (Which PennDOT had said they’d be fixing, btw.)
