looks like a hole lot of trouble
Maybe They'll Fix Smallman Street Now...
That brick wall makes me think there are some tunnels to be explored under the Strip.
Also, the corner across the street is where I crashed and busted two front teeth.
No way. It'll be like the McArdle bride where they close it for a year and then reopen it w/o doing anything.
I'd love to see Smallman St turn into a one-way street with bike lanes and sidewalks in both directions.
that one spot next to the stop sign looks like it would make a cool ramp
I think you could grind that rail on the far right too.
a very timely 5% rate hike. lulz
Hole-y smokes. Never thought that'd happen, "ditch"-ya?
It looks like the telephone pole dropped 4 feet or so without tipping over at all.
I wonder if this is the work of the "4th river"?

@scott oh god yes. I'm assuming it would be outbound? I hate biking on this street and am surprised it is on the map as a bike route. Railroad is a much better alternative.
I tried to go check it out after the YEP thing tonight but smallman was closed from 27th to 29th and there were plenty of bright lights, big machines, and about 100 people in yellow vests milling about the hole...
Did they find the big black monolith yet?
@dmtroyer: railroad only goes 8 blocks or so, hence the inferior recommendation of using smallman...
there is an underground tunnel that comes from the river between the 16th and 31st bridge... that might be what it collapsed on... i've canoed down it, its scary
It's terrifying to me that things like this exist under our city. In my last neighborhood we had a couple sink holes open up and suck in a car or two parked on the street.
now that i look at where it is on the map i'm thinking it really is that tunnel... that's scary, that would make it like a 30+ ft hole
You can see what looks to me like brick pilings in the picture above, which suggests to me not just a regular street.
All they need to do is cart out some of those big metal plates to cover it with and they can wait another few years to fix this thing...
Woah... I never saw the tunnel when I am out canoeing in that area Mark. Where exactly is it? I'd love to peep that out sometime.
I wonder how much treated water is lost due to broken/cracked/leaking mains. Do you suppose it's a significant fraction of total usage? I guess I wouldn't be surprised to learn it was between 1% and 5%.

Wonder no more. Gifts and Leaks
maybe they just paved over an old brick-paved street, and that's what that is?
