August Flock of Cycles

Well, the weather forecast couldn’t possibly look any better for tomorrow night. Come enjoy a nice bike ride with fellow flockers.
We will meet at 5:30 pm at Dippy, and try to leave by 6:00 pm. Expect to ride for a couple hours and have a potlock-style picnic in the park afterwards. Make something and bring it along, or buy some food to share at the Giant Eagle, where we will stop immediately before heading to the picnic site.
A link to the Facebook event, and the important bits pasted below (for the neo-luddites):
As always, FOC welcomes EVERYONE! Gender, race, religion, class, occupation… none of that matters. It is a slower paced ride, so it is a great opportunity to bring out your weird wheels–tandems, tall bikes, recumbents (the weirdest), trikes, rat rods, choppers, and unicycles are all welcomed.
Helmets are STRONGLY encouraged, and lights are mandatory after dusk.
REMEMBER: For all of our safety, it is important to keep the group as tight as possible.
I’ll be out of town for this month’s ride. Catch you all in September!
You probably should have made “try” bold, instead of “leave”.
Someone please remind me to charge the stereo battery tonight.
I still had editing privileges. Bolding shifted.
Remember to charge the motorolas too.
I’m excited, I can come to this one finally. It’ll get me to rig up christmas bike style lights too. Well, at least buy a headlight.
I’m planning to come! First FOC ride for me too!
Is “the picnic site” Schenley or somewhere else? (I just want to make sure I know how to get home from the end point, especially since it might be getting dark.)
It will be at Schenley as far as I know. I don’t know where you live, but most folks don’t have a problem finding someone else to ride most of the way home with.
I’m in Greenfield, but embarrassingly unfamiliar with many parts of the city. I know Schenley and the Oakland area pretty well, though.
when I get a helmet and a better work schedule, I’ll join one of these. Until then, maybe I’ll run into some of you on my way in to work
I always, always seem to miss this. Going away happy hour for my roommate tomorrow night.
If the (*&&^^&@$% G2 shows up on time and has a rack, I’ll be there.
I’ll be riding back to SS after this if anyone is hesitant to make that ride back at night.
i will be out of town for any flocking this friday and the next. i hope to be nausea-free at the next flock i can attend.
Hmmm, I’m considering going and bringing my sister and niece along, but they’re definitely on the slower side. (Niece in trailer) Any other kids coming to this one?
I have a spare bike tied up in a Downtown garage. If anyone wants to ride but doesn’t have a ride, PM me and I’ll give you the details and the combo.
This was fun! Nice meeting everyone!
On the ride home, someone yelled out of their car, distinctly, “Turn off your lights!” I’m not sure what they were trying to communicate.
(If anything, this ride reinforced my belief that if I plan on going any distance in the dark, I need to invest in a better headlamp.)
Well I think tonight was a night of firsts…
First 3.5 year old flocker (my niece)
First trailer in FOC?
First trailer crossing over train tracks
First FOC drop-out and pick up via car (On Beacon I think)
First post-FOC vomit (My sister, thinks it was my roommates several day old spaghetti, which luckily neither I nor my niece consumed)
Thanks to the guy who stayed back with my sister until we dropped out and thanks for waiting for us at the top of Beacon. Oh yeah, I just realized I have Nick’s radio. (Was too quiet as I predicted; if I remember, I’ll donate mine next time, they’re a lot louder.)
Alas, dropping out before the end was the FOC equivalent of vasocongestion
Peirce, that radio belongs to Dan. If you would, plug it into a computer and charge it a bit, and bring it to the next FOC ride.
Just charge the radio and bring it next time. It has a mini-USB plug on the back. Plug it in for 8 or so hours, and then unplug it – there is no smart charging circuit.
I thought I would be the first to vomit on a flock ride. There is always next time. Even though I couldn’t go, I still wore my flock t-shirt. It is a Friday standard.
I hereby blame all who attended last night for the next time I get winded going up a hill. Too many brownies left.
Mmm, those were some really good brownies. I could go for 1 or 2 of those now.
Sounds like it was a great time!! I pooped out and instead chose a quiet Friday night at home, but I know I’ll see you soon! Like, when is the next BBQ flock ride?
can I suggest Wilson’s BBQ on the North Side for the next one?
I have yet to have good bbq since moving to pgh. I’m down.
Sames, sorry i couldn’t make it..I had planned on attending but a friend from NY came to visit.
I’m working on the next FOC BBQ ride. I think we may do a FOC ride to OTB first though.
Darn, the first FOC I missed. I would’ve loved to join. I knew I had to leave at 4:50 to catch that G2, but work came in at 4:45, and my boss would’ve been mighty unhappy if I’d skipped out right then.
I ended up joining the Car Free Fridays ride in Carnegie. Hope everyone had a good time!
Well I am finially done dog/house sitting which means I can actually try and make it to a FOC ride now instead of running back to make sure the dog hasnt died or the house hasnt burned down.
Looking forward to my first ride with all of you. Ill be the slow fat guy. (that should narrow it down)
Yeah, looking forward to the next. Hopefully all my side projects/distractions are over!
What with students being back people might want to get some notices out on bulletin boards or something.
Theming this one? other than bbq?
A toga/bbq ride might be ridiculous.
Louie, louie.
Looking a bit further ahead, a halloween ride would be pretty sweet.
FOC was mentioned in last Friday’s iheartpgh.com blog post.
@robjdlc I hereby blame all who attended last night for the next time I get winded going up a hill. Too many brownies left.
Naw!
It’s cause you used up all your prodigious lung capacity getting the charcoal burning. None left.
I know one thing I’d like to see for next time is to get together with saltm513 and her hOOp friends, and have a small bike-to-hOOp festival of a sort.
In general, though, a fun ride through the city, culminating with doing a fun thing at the end of the ride.
