Bikes Reported Stolen 2014
Sorry, byogman, for messing up the credit. You the man!
I haven’t gotten an update about the thie(f/ves). The cop who sent me the text of photos said they know who at least one of them is.
@scott, does that mean you have photos of the bikes the police have recovered? If so, are you allowed to make them public?
I have the photos and can make them public, but then we get into the whole how one proves it’s their bike sorta thing…
Scott, was there a white Peugeot bike among the one that were found?
Great news about another bike find.I have told the police about the pawn shops months ago and glad they found a few bikes and have a detective coming in tomorrow with photos of more bikes / info.I will post any good info
Ok, I just had my bike stolen from the front of my house on Lilac Street in Squirrel Hill.
It is a green Surly Disc Trucker, with drop handle bars, fenders, and a back rack. It has duct tape over the name of the bike.
Stupidly, I don’t have the serial number in easy reach, but I will try to get that.
It was stolen between 5:30 and 6:30pm today. If anyone sees it, call me 412-352-9673.
Update… I had a detective stop by today and they had a warrant for one of the suspected bike thieves, I just got a call that the suspect and Police had a shoot out and a officer hurt and suspect shot.I hope the officer and any other are ok,,its just a sad story for all involved.
Yes that’s it,,i thinking since it just happened it will take a while to get the right story,I was told that the suspect was shot but either way I hope everyone is ok but I am certain its bike related.
Wow, they updated story. They were arresting Amy Calabrese for selling @citywatcher’s bike. Also Richard Desabetino for stealing a bike from somebody’s house on Grandview. Anybody here?
Well that certainly makes me think twice about confronting a bike thief. I mean I’ve been hit by a couple of cars, but never got in a shootout
KDKA has video of chase
Suspect In Custody After Carjacking 2 Vehicles While Fleeing From Police
From girlfriend: “Richey’s not a bad guy. He’s just really misunderstood and I hope he’s okay.”
I mean come on guys, haven’t we all shot at cops, carjacked people and gone on police chases before?
Also wondering, did the forums crack this case? Did we plant the seeds for a shootout
I’ve seen reports that Amy Calabrese = Angel7159 (or some short string of numbers) on this board. Do we know that to be true?
“I mean come on guys, haven’t we all shot at cops, carjacked people and gone on police chases before?”
A quick google-search of her name will show you that it’s par for the course with her dating pool.
Must be nice to have two different criminals with a serious record come up when someone does a google search for her name. I bet her child is going to be real proud of her momma one day for all the criminals that she dates.
ahhh who am I kidding? I bet there isn’t a person in this thread that hasn’t missed a probation hearing at some point.
Note to the girlfriend: Fuuuuuck you. Give Angel access back to the board, I’m sure there are things folks would like to tell “her”.
I hope both of these idiots get rooms with real nice views of the “Jail Trail”. Hi!!
So didnt they arrest the girlfriend then? Like why is she doing
interviews with the TV news? What is wrong with people????
Let’s see…..she’s wanted for selling a stolen bike.
He was wanted for probation violation, and then flees (among other things).
I am not surprised that the police sort of “forgot about” her in the interim. I suspect they’ll be back for her.
I was sort of offended by the news last night that implied that they were chasing HIM because the police were trying to track down someone who had sold a stolen bike. The easy takeaway was “you put MY child and MY neighborhood at risk because he sold a stolen bike?” Hopefully, I was the only one reading between those lines.
P.S. You guys ROCK, by the way. None of this would have been possible without this board. From Ben and Jon on the board/wiki, from CityWatcher’s video evidence to Marko’s sharp eyes and inquiring mind, to police follow up (twice). I am a fan for life of the awesome cycling community here in Pittsburgh.
It is truly the most exciting thing ever to happen on the message board. And just in time for BikeFest!
indyb6 just PM’d me — his bike was not recovered; the Specialized bikes the police found belonged to someone else. They’re looking for the owners.
Thanks to the officers for catching this guy, at no little personal risk. I hope the Baldwin officer who was hit isn’t seriously injured and is out of the hospital soon.
lesson learned: don’t use the same screen name for your online dating profile that you use to try and deflect blame from yourself for a bike you stole. especially not an easily googled one, and especially not if a certain ortho pa happens to work with someone who knows you.
This isn’t just about social media in action, but also the simple old technology called personal networking. We all know one another, in fact most of the people involved here know each other face to face, with connections made directly or indirectly through this board. We each know stuff, we each have specialties, and a lot of us know what each other’s specialties are. That’s not to say we’re experts, even necessarily infallible, but when a lot of properly informed people get on a matter of mutual concern, a lot of good things happen, and quickly.
On one hand, some reporter should totally get on this aspect of the story, so great. Might help to deter thieves if they know we are watching, and we are legion.
On the other hand, I don’t want thieves to know about this. Catch us up some more varmints.
Thanks to the great Bike Pittsburgh network, which was responsible for getting my bike and then with great police work the thief. None if this would be possible without the eagle eyed member, Marko 82 who snapped a photo of my bike.
I agree with the idea that we need to work with the police and sometimes let them keep things quiet so they can get them. Bike Pgh should set up a more robust site for the thefts, data and advice. The WordPress is a little clunky for this purpose. Mayeb agrant is available while the issue is hot to develop a great system of registration and photos.
We were lucky that the pawn shop in question made a suspicious post on the FB swap group, that got the ball rolling. Thanks @marco for the followup photos.
I’m not sure that having a suspect on this board posting self-incriminating evidence even mattered in the end, although it certainly made for an interesting read. I’d love to be a fly on the wall at the police station, to know what they knew and when they knew and compare notes with our own cycling-detectives network.
I don’t really want to talk about angel, as she is a suspect (innocent until proven guilty and all that jazz); we don’t know exactly what role she played in all of this. For me, at least, there are still some question marks.
My take away from all this is to keep an eye on all potential dumping grounds for stolen bikes. The pawnshop on 51 had some bells and whistles that we all need to watch for in the future. A typical pawn shop may have a couple of bikes, usually old and run down. A bunch of tuned up, operational commuters with racks and accessories… that stuck out. They also were being showcased outside of the establishment. I’ll be watching for similar situations in the future as I’m sure we all will be. Besides the former, there are bike shops but I think we basically have that element covered (kudos to Craig for his ongoing help). Beyond that, perhaps swap meets and flea markets are another place to watch?
I think it’s also fortunate that most thieves are not internet savvy, as there is a lot a thief could learn from this thread that would make it more difficult to catch them as well as easier to steal bikes. The more we empower each other with knowledge, the more we inadvertently give away how to identify an easily steal-able bike. It’s a tradeoff we have to live with, I guess.
As with any crime, you do it once and you’ll probably get away with it. When you start to pile on top of the initial crime, the amount of evidence out there increases exponentially. It’s funny, really, in that success breeds confidence which in turn breeds more success… eventually leading to excess which is what usually (I suspect) gets a thief caught.
Don’t mess with the pittsburgh bike scene. We’ll go all NSA on your ass and track you down. Next thing you know, you’re in jail after a police shootout.
Just the first part, where a bike was identified and recovered, that was a happy ending in my book. But then there is the whole other story about the thieves posting here, getting identified and then one getting shot by police after stealing one car and carjacking another.
Pure insanity. I hope the whole story gets published somewhere. Who’s got the movie rights?
“I don’t really want to talk about angel, as she is a suspect (innocent until proven guilty and all that jazz); we don’t know exactly what role she played in all of this…”
Fair point. But the fact that her comment to the press that Dickface McGee is “a good guy, just misunderstood..” really tells me all I need to know about Angel.
Well, no question she is guilty of something… whether it’s criminal, stupidity, or both… that’s for a judge to decide. :p Her involvement is undeniable, but her intent (and specific role) is questionable (to a degree).
As I pointed out earlier, a google search for her name will pull up two different news reports each involving a different man who is in violation of probation and in each case resulted in over-the-top police action (in one case Federal Marshalls and SWAT while in the later an injured police officer, multiple car thefts, and massive chase). Not a great track record, and since I suspect she will come back and read this, I’d like to emphasize what kind of men she is raising her daughter around.
@db, always good to point these things out. I’m sure that she has never considered it, and will start dating a better class of men now that we’ve made her aware of it.
Despicable that this human ooze has children. Next time someone tells me that bicyclists should be licensed, I’m going to tell them a license should be required to have children.
I can tell you with talking to detectives the people on this forum did help get the ball rolling. I can tell you the Police are working very hard on this. The police have another guy in mind I think he may have sold a stolen bike to us and since we got his I.D. with a sale ticket they can find him but it may be legit deal just don’t know yet. I bought the bike knowing he was a suspect but this way I got a drivers I.D. and good info for the police. I did tell the suspect if its a stolen bike I will turn him in but he said its not a hot bike and gave me his info. I just want to say I am doing this with my own money and may be at a lose if the bikes hot. I am not doing it for people to say great job Craig but as a buyer of used bikes its my duty. With all the bikes missing I just want to protect myself and I don’t mind helping people out and i have found a few bikes and have been returned, I just want to do what’s right. I feel bad about the event yesterday with a Policeman getting hurt and someone getting shot. Its just too bad and its a sad story .The police did hear you all and they are doing a great job on this still working hard and I hope it stops the thefts.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i think this will put a big dent on the thefts you all did a great job,,,hats off to Bike Pittsburgh,,,,I know we all want Pittsburgh to be known as a safe fun place to ride a bike,,,ride on
You know, I know it’s late and I’m talking about money not my own, but it would be a beautiful gesture if BikePgh would contact the police departments involved and offer some free Bike Fest tickets to the officers involved. Might help next time a cyclist calls to complain about something.
Hey, I’d even kick in for a ticket or two.
