I've sadly never made it to a Flock ride (yet) and don't know exactly what the marshals do or whether you'd want me doing it, haha, but if it's not something that requires some exceptional skill or knowledge that I don't have, I'm glad to help! I'm signed up and will be there anyway, so I totally don't mind if you want me to do it.
EEB Keg Ride April 28th - Who is volunteering as a ride Marshal
Heyas!
The East End Brewery Keg Ride is coming up April 28th! I'm helping Nick w/Flock of Cycles with some of the Marshal Organization for the event, and I was wondering if there's people out there who would like to help out Marshaling too and who haven't signed up yet.
Marshals get in for free along with a yummy East End Pedal Pale Ale!!
If you --already-- registered, well... that means you will have an additional East End Pedal Pale Ale!!
Let me know here/send me a PM if you want to be added to the volunteer marshal list AND contact nick@flockofcycles.org to confirm.
And I guess you can email me too at: bikeygirlpgh@gmail.com
The Pedal Pale Ale Keg Ride is April 28th! INFO"
Any questions? Let me know!
Cheerio!
@ pearmask, last year the marshals just made sure that cyclist stopped at the major intersections and stayed within the lane, etc. The only “skill” is to stay at the front of the pack until you reach your designated intersection- and remembering which intersection is yours. Since the pack moves at the speed of the guys/gals pulling the keg (7mph?), it’s not difficult at all.
I’m already signed up, but I’m volunteering too.
ETA: we helped with bike parking too.
I signed up, but I'm also hoping to be able to volunteer again. Really looking forward to this!
Sweet, I can do that.
I've done it a couple of times, and already replied to Nick off-line that I'm interested in participating.
Pretty much you get to your appointed intersection ahead or at the head of the group, make sure everyone stops at the light, and yell "Mush!!" when it turns green. Essentially an exercise in getting 500 bikes through a traffic light, and trying not to antagonize auto traffic toooo much.
Awersomeness!!!!
@Marko et-all, Yes, Marshals will be assisting with Bike Parking assembling before the ride. More details later.
BUT Seriously! Being a Marshal is easy, and a great experience in-terms of aiding the EEB & the rest of the folks riding their bikes have a FUN and SAFE expereince
SO yeah, email me and Nick if you're interested -the more the merrier!!!
I'm excited about this! (I'm the Sarah who emailed you and Nick earlier, BTW.)
I know Sara -I got you! Thank you for signing-up!
Seriosuly, it is great to help out!! Many folks who do this ride, it is sometimes their first-time riding in the streets w/traffice in a group-ride, so they appreciate the assistance. And I would like to think that a positive experience in this ride, could make someone more excited-eager to try to ride their bike more often -even maybe commute! Which is a win-win for everyone!
I could do that! Had a lot of fun with the reverse ride in the fall
That sounds great, Aryn! Wanna email me and Nick your info so we can officially add you to the list?
Bumping this to the top!
Anyone else who would like to volunteer? Please let me know!
Count me in. Sending email now.
Will anyone be riding over to the brewery from the Friendship/Bloomfield area? Maybe we could all meet up and head out? I live on S. Winebiddle. Looking for some people to cruise over with.
I'm planning on heading over from Shadyside, I'd be glad to ride over with a group. Doubly so, since I have only a vague idea where the new brewery is.
I'm in Friendship. Maybe we could meet up at say, the Montessori School? I'm not exactly sure of the location either. My plan was to go Coral -> Negley -> E Liberty -> Frankstown -> Look for a bunch of bikes.
Thank you for volunteering guys! Adding your names as-we-speak to the list!
THIS SATURDAY WE RIDE!!!
Any other takers? Email me and let me know!!!!
@CPollack - are you just going to do the ride? Or are you volunteering too? Because I don't have you on my volunteer list if you are volunteering....
I'm in - I sent email to Nick before and just forwarded it to you.
I was contacted by Lucia, and will be a marshall on this ride also. So we are going to meet on Winebiddle at the Montessori School? 8:45am? Sound good to anyone?
I probably won't be able to meet quite that early, looks like I'll be on my own to ride there. I unfortunately will have to work until 9, so I'm looking at getting to the brewery by 9:45 or so.
That was just a suggestion. If everyone has a general time they want to meet i am open to it. Unless marshalls have to be there early?
Just sent an email to all the marshals. It should help clarify things. Let me know if you have any questions.
@Chris - I think the school on Winebiddle is Waldorf. Montessori is on Friendship between S Graham and Roup. If you're marshalling you probably need to be there before I planned on rolling out. I'm probably not leaving until closer to 10 so I have some time to hang with the kiddos before the ride.
I'm marshalling, live in Friendship, and in favor of meeting up to head out to the brewery.
Sounds good, i really forget to check this site daily.Escargonaut, where would you like to meet? Marshalls meeting isn't until 10:30, so i'd like to arrive by 10am if possible. My number is 716-979-1101 also, if you want to just text me since i'll reply asap in that case.
(Keeping the discussion here for now, for others who want to convoy along)
The Montessori school (Friendship & Graham) entrance seems as good a landmark as any. Let's say 9:15 meeting?
Deal!
716 represent!
Anybody else wants to volunteer?? We need more Marshall's!!!! Nick won't be in-town so you'll have me as Marshall organizer for the ride!
You know you want to volunteer!!!!
Email me!!!
.
Spoiler alert!
I think the board tries to detect posted spam and prevent it, but doesn't do a very good job of it.
Workaround: Post a message without links, then edit it to include the links.
that is uncool.
People still planning on meeting at the school?? 9:15am!
I'm marshaling now but I still think I'll be leaving later than that. I'll try to be there at 9:15 but don't bother waiting around for me if other people are there and ready to go.
It's looking like I'll be done with work at 7:00 am instead of at 9, so I'm planning on meeting you guys in Friendship.
Good, good stuff. I'm sure Rob will post a pile of photos - including one of his epic arm rasslin' contest, but:
here's the beginning:
And the End:
Wow. The power of beer.
Ha! i'm _almost_ in that one--I'm just to the right of the guy in the orange halfway up the right-hand border of the picture.
Hah, my helmet and jacket are the little white blobs sort of to the right of the person with the red drawstring backpack in the 2nd picture.
This was fun, and it was nice to meet a few of you guys in person!
Yes, I remember seeing you in about that same spot. I must have taken my helmet/horns off by the time this pic was taken, as I don't see myself, though a snippet of my bike's blue fender is peeking around the edge of the building at right, so I must be there.
I knew I should have turned around and waved to the camera.
Thanks Lucia and Nick for organizing the marshaling, everything went very well!
Thank you everyone who participated & volunteered!! Everyone did a terrific job!!!
Sorries if I forgot people's names at the beginning, though -nothing personal
We had a great time at the ride yesterday. Unfortunately my friend broke her pint glass on the way home from Station Street. Is there anyway to get a replacement for her? She had just bought her bike and this was her first organized ride so I would like her to have a momento.
If anyone knows who to contact about that it would be great!
Thanks,
zjc2a, use the contact form on the breweries website to get a hold of scott: http://www.eastendbrewing.com/contact
Alternatively, you can always talk to him on twitter if you have an account: https://twitter.com/#!/EastEndBrewing
Great pics rob. How many official riders?
ditto - nice pics, rob.
Thanks!
@Marko Trying to get a number from Scott. I'll let you know if I hear back.
Great pics Rob! I look ridiculous
Thanks!
Scott said around 510 beers were served.
Rich, you do look ridiculous, but not as much as I do... or at least not as often?
After tallying up the waivers, there were officially 520 on the ride. That's up from 450 last spring.
