if anyone has one of them fancy iphones, then start shooting away. the city's 311 app has all the bugs worked out of it, so now they receive them and the GPS location is accurate.

Liberty Ave in Bloomfield has a doozy I hit this morning. It's a least half a foot around.

If anyone has an Android phone or iPhone, there is this a cool app called iBurgh that lets you take geotagged photos of potholes (or whatever else) and have them sent directly to the 311 office.

Biking home Monday night, I found a nasty longitudinal crack on Pine Hollow Road eastbound, just down from Heckel. In the whole 15-mile trip, it's the only spot I wasn't entirely in control of the bike.

iPhones? meh. Fancy is overkill. Just gimme an address I can text to or a phone # I can leave a message.

when you make a right onto centre from neville, look out! that stupid concrete road surface that was filled with asphalt is coming apart...again.

omg. highland avenue has quite a few. just north of penn circle the pavement has an unbearable likeness to the face of edward james olmos.

oh boy. I can't wait to test out the new sway bar on my car as I'll be rollin' back into town this weekend. I'm pretty sure the potholes broke it last year.

One wonders why they don't just let Centre Ave. turn into gravel. It'd be about the same thing.

+1 for the uselessness of Centre Ave on a bike. I generally test my luck on Baum instead.

Friendship Ave right after the park on the East Lib side. This part of the road already looked like the earth was splitting apart before the winter. Now the cracks are widening and becoming full-fledged holes. Its not too bad to bike around, if you know they are coming, but ive found that cars flying out of the park are trying to dodge these as well making for some close calls.

I generally test my luck on Baum instead.

I agree, Centre Ave would be best left to gravel or dirt. Who fills in cement with asphalt?

serious. and who makes a cement road? did they wonder what they'd do if there was ever a pot hole?

There was a city truck patching holes along Negley Avenue this morning.

Of course, it was in the middle of rush hour, so much chaos ensued.

Please quickly log your 311 complaints here as well so we can keep an eye on them. I also want to see, roughly, how many 311 complaints cyclists register.

agreed, Highland by Home Depot is extremely ugly.

its gonna get bad this weekend when snow melts and the potholes are hidden by lakes of water... be careful!

I expect the lost continent of Atlantis to pop up in the midst of one of our Pittsburgh potholes.

Morewood's a fine mess. I just 311'd it.

they patched those at the penn n penn circle intersection. looks like they are getting a lot of them around there today....

I had my first serious crash in a while tonight, and the culprit wasn't a hole but a heave. The pavement must've buckled four inches above the road surface. If the street got more than the car-every-half-hour traffic it now gets it'd probably *be* a big hole, but the main thing is, it isn't just holes that are the problem.

(fwiw, it's in West View not the city.)

I second the Home Depot comment. Ellsworth is getting bad again too. I'm honestly amazed at how bad the roads are this year---I don't recall the pavement having so many damn holes in it last year.

That said, (and this is slightly unrelated, but...) I-70E in W.Va. (from 470 to Pa border) is a moonscape in the right lane. I think their DOT set the plow blades too low. It's impossible to drive in the right lane w/o 4-wheel drive. So I guess it kind of put things in perspective. o_O

oh geez, 18th St., on the downhill, just past Mission Street. It's rather large, 1 1/2-2' X 1' or so with a depth reaching the brick beneath. Yikes, man.

saw a pair of doozies eastbound of forbes, just past wightman. they're in a row, so if you miss one, you miss them both, but if you hit one...

If any of you have MTB's or fatty tires, there is a massive lump like stu mentioned on Neville right before it hits the busway. Serious air

For anyone who uses Alder St., there's a HUGE hole somewhere between Highland and Spahr St., I think at Lehigh (I'm looking at a map here). If you're approaching Highland Ave. on Alder, it's in the middle of the road a couple blocks before Pizza Perfecta.

It's a serious bike-eater.

A car stuck in a pothole at the intersection of Boulevard of the Allies and Market Street is blocking outbound traffic in the right lane.

The car's front left tire became lodged in the hole shortly after five while it was inching through traffic. The hole is more than 3 feet deep, police said.

Police plan to reopen the lane with barricades or cones warning motorists of the pothole as soon as a tow truck, currently en route, can pull the car out of the pothole. The car sustained no damage.

i called 911 at 4:37 yesterday on that sink hole. they said it was in the system...

A motorcycle cop was parked alongside the hole at 6:50 last night when I came through on foot. I darn near *stepped* in the hole as I crossed the street, not realizing why he was sitting there.

There are currently a few patched potholes on Negley Avenue that have new potholes in them.

This is a fitting metaphor for our winter thus far, I think.

There are also some spectacular potholes along Fifth Avenue in Oakland.

There are epic level potholes nearly everywhere...what's bigger than epic? We may need to find out.

However, last evening from a bus inbound to Squirrel Hill I noticed some very deep potholes on Forbes around 100 feet before you get to the St. Edmunds/JCC driveways. I imagine there are others along the route but my eyes bulged when I saw these. They are exactly where you would be riding if you had a lot of cars/buses etc. to your left. Keep your eyes peeled.

These days, it's really worth taking the lane if at all possible. You really don't want to be stuck in the gutter given the condition of the roads.

In some cases (California Ave between Marshall and the Post Office, I'm looking at you...), you need to be willing to crowd the double yellow, or even (briefly) cross it.

Take care also if you're closely following a car at any reasonable speed. Unless you know the road to be in good condition, a pothole can appear from out of nowhere with no time to avoid it.

Im pretty sure on morewood between ellesworth and center was where there is one that is literally the ENTIRE lane. It was a total WTF moment for every car trying to go around it.

There's also one on Morewood right next to CMU that's probably a foot deep.

I was thinking it would be like roads gone back to nature sort of thing like Detroit. But, some of the potholes I've seen are deep enough you could just go ahead and plant a tree...

Shady Ave is a mess. And they just repaved it last year.

Beechwood Blvd. near 5th has an insane number of holes. Some more up the hill too, but closer to 5th there's almost no way to avoid them.
