Crap!! This looks so amazing and fun!! I want in!

A. Where does one get viking gear? I at least want something to cut up and somehow stretch over my helmet! Haha.

B. I am definintely going to try to get a few hours off of work to make this, or try for the whole day.

cpollack
2011-03-15 06:31:35

I am bringing myself, my bike, dback, his bike, reusable plates/silverware/napkin for myself and one other person (whoever wants), water for washing up/drinking, food item (depends what's in season, might be sesame sweet peas), as well as any additional items dback may want to transport in the car as well.

CPollack - I'd check party stores, but scuttlebutt seems to imply this is a DIY party.

Where does one get viking gear?

One sacks a castle.

pseudacris
2011-03-15 13:47:22

I should be able to bring firewood and manage that component for communal grilling.

Does anyone know that park, is there one of those steel pedestal grills?

edmonds59

> Where does one get viking gear?

Spotlight Costumes on Carson Street has delux viking helmets with horns and fur for $20. Helmets without the fur for $8. And some kids sizes and soft helms. I just stopped by there and they have at least half a dozen of each.

I will bring a cooler full of once living consumables for the Non Vegetarians if we can find out about the whole grill situation.

dbacklover
2011-03-15 17:46:57

I will have F.A.Q and what you-should-know soon...

If you have specific questions, shoot away!!

For now, assume we will have to bring out our own "tailgate" style grills. I was thinking that if we could have (2) of them, one for Omnivorous people and one for the Herbivorous, we would be good....

@Edmonds.... there is no "pit" for wood burning.....

I'll get back to you on this & more.... soon....

bikeygirl
2011-03-15 18:04:52

woot! It's a grill!

edmonds59
2011-03-15 18:54:06

The last time I was there, Im pretty sure they had built in grills.

the-beast

I'll try to make viking-shaped bread at work.

rubberfactory

This looks fabulous! But, inevitably, there are Questions:

1) Are you renting the pavilion? If so, who's putting up the cash? do you want donations?

2) The pavilion has a full food-prep area. Will we be using it for re-heating stuff and for clean-up? (It also has washrooms, electricity, etc.)

3) What's the Millvale policy on alcoholic beverages?

4) Is this rain-or-shine?

[ps-> for the person who suggested pillaging castles for viking gear. Recall that our all-new PA assembly is voting in favor of the expanded "castle doctrine". Be careful out there.]

----

whoops, just saw @bikeygirl's post...

ahlir

THE SKINNY ON THE PAVILLION-POTLUCK FACILITIES:

*Covered shelter!

*PIcnic-Style table -About 12 of them!!

*Car parking If you are car-commuting your bike & potluck goodies!

*(2) Medium-Size built-In charcoal grills!!!

WHAT WE DON'T HAVE:

*Bathrooms at Pavillion are closed for repair, but there are some nearby

*No water -so bring your own!

*No electricity -but it will all be daytime so who cares.

Hrm.... Anything else?

EDIT: FOR THOSE ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS:

*I talked to the folks in charge of the Pavillion, and it doesn't officially open for rental until end of April -so that's why the kitchen, bathrooms, water are out/closed. BUT, we can still use the facility as-is, as long as we leave it better than when we found it.

*Therefore, we are using it for free & I haven't spent any money so-far. I'll probably get some "basic-general-supplies" for back up & for the un-prepared cyclist, but so far no donations are needed.

*I did not ask about alcohol policy for the place since we are technically not renting the Pavillion -but I can ask the association nevertheless. Assume the answers are "no" or "no open containers allowed". Either way, I will not police anyone nor will be responsible for that -I just expect people to behave in a social-healthy-responsible-prudent Viking manner.

*Rain or Shine most definitely. If it rains we can just do the short route & start "potlucking" earlier.

*Both routes start at the Pavillion and go west on the Milvalle trail towards the North Side, around the stadiums, across to Downtown, and then fork apart, with the short-route heading down The Strip District and all the way back to the Starting Point at the Pavillion. The long route goes on through Downtown, Jail Trail, Panther Hollow, and so on, until it makes it's way back to the Pavillion via 40th Street Bridge.

*Short route is approximately 10miles. Long Route approximately 22 miles.

*No re-heating on-site unfortunately :(

Anything else? :)

*

bikeygirl

Two questions about the routes:

1) Which direction?

2) And what are the distances for the 2 options?

BTW, thanks @bikeygirl for setting this all up. I'm really excited about this!

I'll be making something. Vegetarian, possibly vegan. (Depends on my time and what I have on hand.)

Once I know what it is, I'll post it. :)

Since I volunteered the fire stuffs, I will be driving to the park, so if people bring items to the start, you can stow things in the vehicle during the ride.

I've put together the armature for the prow. Tomorrow I'll do the stern and start in on the first part of skinning. I think I've got time, 6-7 days. It's gonna rock.

HEYAS!!!

I THINK I FOUND WHAT COULD BE THE "OFFICIAL" T-SHIRT FOR THIS RIDE!!!!

"Pillage and burn, maim and kill....nothing like a little good old fashioned Viking fun!"

I found it at "The Cotton Factory", which is a local T-Shirt company based here in Pittsburgh!

http://www.cottonfactory.com/pillage-and-burn.html

I think that I found my t-shirt for this ride! YEAH!!!!!

EDIT: I'M DEFINITELY GETTING THIS T-SHIRT -IF PEOPLE/SOMEONE IS INTERESTED IN ONE TOO, LET ME KNOW AND I CAN PUT YOU IN MY ORDER, AND I'LL BRING THE TEE FOR YOU BEFORE THE RIDE :)

:D

bikeygirl

Can we burn an effigy of a Marcellus Shale gas well?

pseudacris
2011-03-17 16:31:01

NO BURNING EFFIGYS OF ANY KIND!!!!

Let's not get back on that line-of-discussion

Even if the burning-effigy is to support a good cause.... ;)

Voting has ended over at Woot but I don't know if this shirt is one of the winners. If so, it will go on sale in the next few days for $10 and, if ordered immediately, may be shipped in time for the ride next week.

10 day forcast says high of 42 that day. That is just a tad chilly but im still excited for the ride. Those I invited may not show but Ill be there.

dbacklover
2011-03-18 15:01:26

that's probably the high that vikings are accustomed to.

rubberfactory
2011-03-18 15:04:27

Plus, Pgh 10-day weather forecasts are about as accurate as looking in a magic 8 ball. it'll change, don't worry.

2011-03-18 15:42:48

Blast!!!!! i've just been informed I made plans for the day of the ride. I promised my sister Id make it to her competition that day, and since i haven't been to one yet, I guess I better go.

bikelove2010
2011-03-18 17:08:12

Are you Saying a magic 8 ball isnt trustworthy.. I asked it if I should get married and it said YES...

I see your point

dbacklover
2011-03-18 18:53:50

dback - I ride unless the roads are covered in something nasty. At which point I'll be at DH's getting studed tires installed, and THEN I'll ride. Your transportation is thus assured :D

ejwme
2011-03-18 19:27:53

Ejwme

I never doubted you, I invited everyone I know to join the ride. My friends and pastor and sisters and brother.. you know everyone everywhere. I really dont expect any of them to show up. 8-]

dbacklover
2011-03-18 19:43:49

Man, this just occured to me, we have paddlers on this board! There could be a bike, pillage, and paddle triathlon. The rivers are probably a little too nasty to do this time, though.

edmonds59
2011-03-19 15:10:17

I'm going to miss this now. The first big work day of e season for the north park free ride trail has been scheduled for Saturday. We are repairing the winter damage and finishing the last big feature so we can open the trail for the season so it's a big all hands on deck kind of workday. Sorry.

cburch
2011-03-21 04:16:42

Just waiting on two more pieces of my costume. So excited!

@edmonds59, that sounds like fun! Can't do it this year since I haven't touched a kayak in over a year... but if there is a Viking Ride 2:The Quickening, I'd def be there. :)

myddrin
2011-03-21 12:43:36

@Cburch.... Well that sucks! Is Stefanie still coming though?

You can always try to come by later at least for the potluck

And how about everyone else???

Remember.... come as you are, but if you come with viking-gear you will be a hell-lot cooler! :)

bikeygirl
2011-03-21 15:48:59

I'm still gonna try to swing through Millvale after the 200K, but it'll be late afternoon at the earliest.

Given how feeble my legs are these days, it may be early evening. ;-)

Worked on Viking gear over the wknd. Gettn ready.

edmonds59
2011-03-21 16:25:13

stef will be there for sure. possibly in cardboard and construction paper viking gear. the workday will be from 9am till 6 or 7 pm. i'll call stef after to see if people are still in millvale and swing by if they are. i wish i could do both as this looks like a really fun ride, but the freeride park is a bigger commitment.

cburch
2011-03-21 16:52:06

HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!!!!!

WE ARE RE-LOCATING THE POTLUCK AND RIDE-STARTING POINT TO THE SOUTHSIDE!!!!

I JUST TALKED AND TRIED TO CONFIRM --AGAIN-- THAT WE COULD USE THE MILVALLE PAVILLION AS-IS FOR OUR GATHERING, AND WE HAVE BEEN DENIED!!!!

TURNS OUT THAT THE MILVALLE ASSOCIATION DOESN'T FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH MANY PEOPLE CONGREGATING THERE FOR A LONG-PERIOD OF TIME WITH NO BATHROOMS. IN ADDITION, I WAS TOLD THEY ARE/WILL BE DOING WORK IN THERE THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS, AND DON'T WANT PEOPLE MESSING AROUND THERE RIGHT NOW....

SO.....

We are relocating -TO THE SOUTHSIDE.

PARKING AVAILABLE

But we will need to bring, on top of food and water, our own grills.

DO I HAVE (2) VOLUNTEERS TO BRING THEIR PERSONAL TAILGATE-STYLE GRILLS FOR THIS EVENT???

PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP -POST HERE ON THE BOARD!!!

My apologies for this last-minute change, but it is not under my control.....
