bikeygirl
2012-07-13 17:18:18

stef will be there, i might be bringing my sister and her family to the party, but they won't have bikes for the kids (stoping in town on their way back from florida) I'm hoping they aren't too pooped to go out when they get here.

Does anyone know why the website doesn't really seem to be updated?

http://flockofcycles.org/?page_id=24

Just curious, as I've never heard of these before.

italianblend
2012-07-13 18:00:51

We are working on it. New website soon

marvelousm3
2012-07-13 18:05:07

@Italianblend, do you have Facebook? You can "like" our page there. It will be a good source of info for now, and we're working on updating our web presence elsewhere.

You should totally join us next week!

2012-07-13 18:06:26

Oh okay. Thanks, I hope I didn't offend you guys about the website. This is a monthly thing?

italianblend
2012-07-13 18:14:40

Nope, we're all in agreement the website needs to be updated :)

sgtjonson
2012-07-13 18:24:36

No offense taken — we have been actively working on new website plans this week, actually, so we already knew it needed some work :)

Yep, these party rides will usually be monthly (at least for the parts of the year where the weather is reliable enough). There will be a ride during BikeFest next month, too: stay posted for more info about that!

In addition to the monthly party rides, we'll host other fun rides and events from time to time. We've done special night light-up rides and stuff like that in the past. We'll post here about them, and we're actively working on ways to spread info via our website and elsewhere too.

2012-07-13 18:25:50

(edit) pearmask said everything I was about to say.

marvelousm3
2012-07-13 18:26:58

I'm totally bringing some extra hot guacamole from reyna's.

rubberfactory
2012-07-13 21:18:20

5:30? Geez, some of us have jobs.

Eh whatever, I'll be there.

joeframbach
2012-07-13 23:37:40

Yeah, we're doing our best to find a good compromise, since some have also said that a later time is too late. For those who can't arrive in time for the 5:30 meetup / 6:00 rollout at Dippy, you have the additional option of catching up with us at the Eliza Furnace Trail parking lot at 6:30.

2012-07-14 00:57:25

I like the multiple meeting time options! This was I'm covered if I decide to take a nap after work :)

rubberfactory
2012-07-14 01:57:30

The secondary meeting place is something that we will add to every Flock ride.

marvelousm3
2012-07-14 02:01:00

Crap, I am going to the Pirate game....Jail trail parking lot is a perfect spot for me to join the group. Maybe next time. :(

2012-07-16 12:51:12

Are these rides on traffic roads? Do you have some sort of escort? Just curious

italianblend
2012-07-16 13:40:29

This ride is about half road, half trails. We have no escorts, but do have a seasoned person in the front, a seasoned person as the last cyclist, and seasoned cyclists spread out in between.

sgtjonson
2012-07-16 14:37:27

No driver is going to tangle with 80 bicycles. Not that it hasn't been tried...

stuinmccandless
2012-07-16 16:11:47

mad props to the poster designer, too. Despite the challenging ergonomics, Dippy was clearly born to ride. You've elegantly captured his esprit de velo.

ejwme
2012-07-16 20:28:02

If I come, can I rent some space in someone's pannier bag for the potluck? All my bikes have zero utility... :)

rice-rocket
2012-07-17 02:15:33

Ill be bringing my shoulder bag and im sure there will be several people with panniers. I really want to "liberate" a milk crate for my bike.

dbacklover
2012-07-17 16:16:51

I can bring a crate, I might need to anyway. I would bring my mountain bike with the donkey boxes on the sides, but it's less-than-comfortable to ride.

rubberfactory
2012-07-17 16:24:41

You can definitely borrow pannier space from me. I'll bring two of them and will have plenty of room.

2012-07-17 16:33:58

Excited. but. Since I'm not even sure I know where the kitchen is at our house, is there something that would be helpful that I could just buy and bring, chips, bread, or something? Any approx ideas as to what is being brought?

edmonds59
2012-07-19 11:10:15

I'm buying chips and guacamole, my backup was a granola bars.

rubberfactory
2012-07-19 11:11:07

Fingers crossed, I'll be making this one. I now work not far from Dippy....

myddrin
2012-07-19 14:51:53

Is this a go in the event of rain or what's the plan?

edmonds59
2012-07-20 15:08:56

It is possible rain might cancel, but that decision isn't likely to be made until 430 or 5. (I'll probably show up anyway, but I'm sick like that.)

epanastrophe
2012-07-20 15:50:00

Based on my completely nonprofessional reading of the radar map, I would say that it will be close, but the rain will pass by 6.

rzod
2012-07-20 16:00:34

First of all, I love the poster! Kudos to the design/implement team.

Unfortunately, I think I have to take a pass on this ride. A combination of work schedule, weather, etc. (As in, I did not ride in today due to rain, would have to go home to get bike, clothes, etc) and making it back to Oakland by 6:00 impossible, and even a 6:30 meet time problematic. I am really bummed. I was looking forward to this ride!

swalfoort
2012-07-20 16:18:22

Would love to make this one but my adventures are taking me to Cleveland tonight for a concert. Was hoping to get more use outta my rain gear and lights.

orionz06
2012-07-20 16:25:13

Wont be making it tonight, between my wrist that just wont heal up and the rain this morning when I would of been riding into town I decided to pass on this... and im not happy about it at all.

I was really looking forward to seeing you all.

dbacklover
2012-07-20 16:25:49

Gah! We're getting a lot of cancellations and people dropping out early. We should have another next month; hopefully those that cannot make it then can make it now.

sgtjonson
2012-07-20 16:33:38

I'll go out and ride around. If I don't see anybody I'll just go get some grub.

If it gets cancelled, push it to next week and still do another in August, I'd say.

Orionz you should go early and see what this is all about - Cleveland Velodrome Open House!; http://www.facebook.com/events/417008725015870/

edmonds59
2012-07-20 17:03:25

There is still hope. The rain might end before the ride, don't cancel on it yet

marvelousm3
2012-07-20 17:11:05

I'll be there pretty much whatever the weather is.

sgtjonson
2012-07-20 17:16:15

You figure, even if the ride was totally cancelled, there would stil lbe a couple of hard-core types that show up.

Alas! I have other commitments. Might be able to cruise past Panther hollow lake, though.

mick
2012-07-20 18:06:09

I braved the rain and will be there, rain or shine. I'm expecting shine. I've been wrong before, but a look at the radar shows a long thin line of showers that are moving pretty much along that line. All it will take is for the line to drift north or south, and voila, the rain lets up. I'm confident.

stuinmccandless
2012-07-20 18:32:44

@Mick

Maybe you could stop by and play some tunes?

sgtjonson
2012-07-20 18:41:23

I'll be there and I'm counting on no rain, I haven't installed fenders yet thats how confident I am.

marvelousm3
2012-07-20 18:43:55

Weather.com says 85% chance of rain at 5pm. 90% at 7pm. The map doesn't look good to me. If the ride is on I will be there (especially since I volunteered to fill in as DJ), but if we're taking a vote I'm ok will moving the ride to next week.

rzod
2012-07-20 18:55:49

Looks like there's some serious flash flooding going on south of the city. With more rain on the way, lets hope it doesn't move north. :( This is 51 and 88. Second pic is Lebanon Church Rd.

rice-rocket
2012-07-20 19:31:29

Ha! That's crazy. Top photo was taken by a friend and former co worker of mine.

2012-07-20 19:33:19

It's too bad I'm not working at South Campus today, I could have cycled through that, although I'm not sure it's good for the hubs

sgtjonson
2012-07-20 19:37:31

If you like swimming around in raw sewage, go for it...

rice-rocket
2012-07-20 19:40:18

Yeah, I try not to think of that. Maybe I'll just stick to runoff coming down 885. It is pretty fun though!

As long as it doesn't get in your mouth, you should be okay right?

sgtjonson
2012-07-20 19:47:49

Not gonna make it either. I feel sick (hardly got through batman) and dogs are sick also.

stefb
2012-07-20 20:30:20

I'm not making it either. Normally rain isn't a concern for me...but ever since the mid-century bronchitis, I'm trying to be a little bit more cautious.

myddrin
2012-07-20 20:35:03

I posted this on the admin board, but I'll cc it for here:

At 4:00, the trailing edge of the rain was over central Beaver County. The serious weather was in the South Hills.

At 4:40, it's pretty much stopped raining Downtown.

I'm still holding to that we'll be OK by 6.

The ground might be too wet to have an on-ground picnic, though.

stuinmccandless
2012-07-20 20:48:16

I'm at Dippy and no rain in sight. Roads are starting to dry

marvelousm3
2012-07-20 21:05:59

I'll try to be there soon! leaving in a few minutes here, just need to motivate myself out of bed.

rubberfactory
2012-07-20 21:16:12

I repeated this to a comment on our FB page.

stuinmccandless
2012-07-20 21:17:44

Well, flat tire. Seems that I'll see you guys at the end of the jail trail at 6:30 instead.

rubberfactory
2012-07-20 21:22:31

PS - I'm now a huge advocate of the early start time. I'm home already, I can get in 6 full hours of sleep tonight! Usually I'd feel groggy and tired and awful the day after a ride (which is why I didn't attend very often).

A++ would ride again.

rubberfactory
2012-07-21 00:54:09

Thank you to all who came out today. It was a fantastic ride. The first of many to come

marvelousm3
2012-07-21 01:28:50

We had 18 people for the ride tonight plus two more who joined the picnic. Some got muddy from doing wild breaks through the puddles on the Hazeklwood trail on their cross bikes, but otherwise we were dry.

marko82
2012-07-21 01:39:11

And that guy chose to get muddy

sgtjonson
2012-07-21 01:40:32

Damn, sounds like I missed a good ride.

That said, I was at the bike shop, getting my friend a proper fit so he can get hooked on riding too, so not all was lost.

rice-rocket
2012-07-21 02:29:11

Had to make a last minute run to the FedEx facility on Neville Island to pick up the new bike so I bailed. Sucks because the weather was damn near perfect.

boostuv
2012-07-21 03:25:58

There's a fedex facility on Neville Island?

swalfoort
2012-07-21 13:12:41

That would be it.

boostuv
2012-07-21 20:01:56

I tried to make it for the picnic, but at about 9:15, there wasn't anyone at the lake.

I had a nice picnic by myself, though, and then I went on my way. Flock of 1.

mick
2012-07-23 00:38:04

We started to break up around 8:30. I was among the first to leave, as I had an 8:50 bus to catch Downtown (and made it).

stuinmccandless
2012-07-23 01:25:50

I left with Stu as I had to be at work by 5am

marvelousm3
2012-07-23 01:48:38

Mick, you should have called me. We headed over to Sharpedge in Friendship

ndromb
2012-07-23 01:55:57

Well if I had known you guys were heading over to Sharpedge.... I still would have gone home to bed.

marvelousm3
2012-07-23 02:02:40

Glad to hear it was good, I ended up having to work until 7 pm. On a Friday, in July. Pissed.
