Flock of Cycles September Party Ride

September 21st 5:30pm

It's that time again for the most fun you will ever have. The Flock of Cycles Party Ride. Meet us at Dippy the Dinosaur 4100 Forbes Ave. for a fun ride around town. An all new route takes us to The Point for the post ride party.

Also, don't worry if you aren't super-familiar with Pittsburgh's bike routes: we'll be glad to ride with people back to Oakland after the party if anyone needs help getting home from downtown.

Helmets and lights are mandatory. It will get dark during the ride Bring your lights. We will bring the fun.

This is the beautiful route.

oooh, Carsony.

2012-09-18 00:18:01

Yay!

2012-09-18 00:31:40

oh yeah!

sweet. I love dippy on the bike.

*grouse* Bah, another one I'm going to miss because I'm out of town.

Boo, Stu!

It would be awesome to have a Dippy tail when riding. A car buzzes you, and, WHAP.

2012-09-18 23:52:39

heh, imagining a real Dippy on a bike, he'd use the neck to say a soft-chewbacca-like friendly hello to people with sunroofs open, then affectionately lick them like a giant bike-riding puppysaurus.

ejwme
2012-09-19 01:40:07

Ha! And then some of us would start carrying around Giant Bike-Riding Puppysaurus Snax in the glove compartment to encourage him.

Edited: and also hang onto his tail going up Greenfield Avenue.

2012-09-19 02:23:54

*wonders how he might fashion a diplodocus costume that could be ridden in ... with tail*

stuinmccandless
2012-09-19 13:14:52

@Stu: I'm thinking a tandem arrangement a la the old vaudeville 2-man horse costumes, plus maybe a trail-a-bike as support for the tail.

Marko, if i saw one of those coming down the road, i'd be unvelcroing my U-lock and building up momentum.

SOmethigns are jsut too unnatural.

2012-09-19 14:36:13

I did specify a diplodocus. Dunno about Barney.

I do like the tandem/trailer idea, though!

stuinmccandless
2012-09-19 15:22:30

You could cut one costume in half and use a purple towel & some ducttape.

2012-09-19 15:52:22

Who's coming? Tomorrow 5:30 be there! I didn't make the play list for the ipod so don't blame me.

mrs-marvelous
2012-09-21 00:46:42

I'm coming!

2012-09-21 00:50:42

Booo. Can't. Big freelance job means extra money but no free time. I swear I *will* make it to one of these someday.

I'll be there!

josgood
2012-09-21 13:19:08

I'll be there too! Can't wait! I'm a bike commuter who hasn't been able to ride for weeks!

2012-09-21 13:32:35

Yep, unless something hits the fan.

edmonds59
2012-09-21 15:01:23

I'll be there, even took the time to string lights on my bike for the party ride.

I'm going to take vacation time from work just to be there.

Got out of work super early, which gave me enough time to pick up some chips and guacamole from Reyna's, in addition to the cookies I'm bringing from work.

Good people, good music, good ride. I hope we can pull these off through winter.

Super fun ride. Always good to see great people you already know and meet some new ones. Shame on the PPD for shutting down the fun at OTB though.

2012-09-22 02:52:46

^Seriously, IT’S JUST WATER!

This is why we can’t have nice things.

Fun.

Huge success on the frame mounted sound system.

And...mmmead.

Great ride! I am still shaking my head in wonderment at the Crazy Cager who passed the entire group and turned left in front of us while we were waiting for the light to change at the end the Smithfield Bridge.

That was classy.

The ride was amazingly fun. The best ride this year. I love the cycling community and I am grateful to be apart of it.

You know it's a good ride when the Police are call to OTB.

Thanks to everyone who showed, and the ride will only get better. And yes my playlist will have more Ka$ha.

marvelousm3
2012-09-22 13:48:56

Mos Def a good ride.

Bummed i missed all the OTB excitement, but then again Octoberfest @ Penn Brewery had its own levels of epicness.

And how cool was that guy's bike mounted sound system? A speakerbox built into the front triangle running off an ipod. cool stuff indeed. (Bonus: he found out about the ride from parking day.)

2012-09-22 14:14:26

Perfect night.

That sound system was amazing--and he built the whole thing with free parts/stuff he had lying around!

Mead and food=delicious. The crowd was great.

And the water and ensuing brush with the young officer=funnnnyyy.

2012-09-22 14:57:50

I think he was 12 years old

marvelousm3
2012-09-22 15:03:28

Oops, double post. Sorry, I just woke up.

2012-09-22 15:18:03

Yes! Guess they didn't take us too seriously--the kid didn't even have back-up.

I can't believe even one motorist called the cops because their car got wet.

2012-09-22 15:18:03

Also it was embarrassing that I fell off my bike at OTB after only one Woodchuck.

marvelousm3
2012-09-22 15:19:33

Hee hee--I would laugh harder if I hadn't done that myself (and didn't expect to do it again).

2012-09-22 15:31:56

+1 on sound system. Sorry i missed the otb debacle

dbacklover
2012-09-22 15:43:20

Wait...

Cop shutdown & a fall over?

Talk about a night of epic.

(I have a "personal best" of post-otb fall over of 4 times in the same ride.)

2012-09-22 18:41:20

Great night, great ride, great music.

I missed OTB (had to go home). Now I am curious what happened there.

2012-09-22 19:06:03

what happens at OTB stays at OTB.

epanastrophe
2012-09-23 02:05:56

@Andrew S Shame on the PPD for shutting down the fun at OTB though.

???

When you start spraying lots of water on cars that might have open windows, just what do you expect will happen?

The cops might say "It's OK to spray your water on those car's sound systems and the nicely dressed occupants. I'll be on my way" ???

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

It's shame that we made the police come, not a shame that the police responded appropriately.

One of the drivers stopped and was angry, too. Shocker.

mick
2012-09-24 16:29:21

wtf? What did I miss by heading out of town? This was the ride we've been inviting a crapton of potentially hostile people to so we can show them what we're about?

stuinmccandless
2012-09-24 19:12:19

Nothing directly related to the ride. OTB had some sort of bike-powered water gun set up for PARK(ing) Day, and some people happened to go there after the ride, and apparently it got out of hand. I wasn't there.

But yeah, I kinda tend to agree with Mick. Don't get me wrong, they sound fun, but I'm not surprised that they annoyed people.

2012-09-24 19:18:14

I guess the cryptic post about OTB made it seem more sinister than it was. For the last 3-4 years OTB has set up a bicycle powered water gun and spray cars. A driver complained and a cop came. I actually don't think he would have shut it down until the OTB employee got on the bike and kept spraying with the cop standing there. Thats when it got shut down.

Nothing to do with the ride we were just posting about what we witnessed after the ride.

marvelousm3
2012-09-24 23:08:44

Yes, I'm sorry for any confusion--the OTB stuff had no connection to the ride. It was just a Pgh Parking Day event.

2012-09-25 00:09:05

This sounds fun...just testing my posting ability.
