Friday FOC?

Been out of town a few weeks. Ready to get back in the saddle. Is Friday's ride Flock All Night?

Should be. I'll be missing this week, parents coming into town, then next week as well, hosting a conference.

How does Flock All Night compare to the 6pm FOC ride in terms of speed, hills, general difficulty, drop policy, etc.?

jeg
2010-09-08 00:32:08

same exact thing, just 4 hours later and with more lights.

noah-mustion
2010-09-08 00:34:49

I'm in.

smarti6
2010-09-08 01:08:48

I am so in, although I broke one of my lights today, I hope it still looks good with 2. They are not kidding when they say to make sure they are firmly attached to the spokes, otherwise you'll be sorry when doing 30mph down Negley and you can't stop enough to keep the thing from vibrating itself apart :(

PS: Noah, I still have a FoC t-shirt for you.

If i am not sick and tired, i am in! Should be nice weather.

forgive me, how does this Flock all night thing work? Where do you guys ride?

bikelove2010
2010-09-08 03:41:23

we ride all over.... could be 15-25 miles depending on how things are going.... hit the trails, carson st., etc. moderate pace, stop for lights, no dropping, etc. helmets encouraged, lights REQUIRED...

noah-mustion
2010-09-08 11:17:27

sweet! where do you meet?

bikelove2010
2010-09-08 12:42:19

We meet at Dippy (the big Dinosaur outside of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Oakland).

Noah, moderate? I'd say it's ...s..l..o..w...

ndromb
2010-09-08 15:17:38

It did not strike me as slow.

mick
2010-09-08 15:42:00

If you trust my blackberry GPS app, we averaged about 11mph during active riding last month.... so I'd say that is fairly slow.

http://www.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip/851067

There was a good bit of downtime last month, too.... a flat if I remember.... plus riding down carson takes about 30 min or somthing like that!

smarti6
2010-09-08 15:54:17

ok, now if I can just muster up the courage to ride the the dinosaur

bikelove2010
2010-09-08 20:10:20

Someone ALWAYS gets a flat. Waiting for it to be me. I think that perhaps the faster, more regular riders may do the whole ride.. It seems like we Ride a little faster at the end of the ride,

stefb
2010-09-08 20:20:13

I am starting a new contest. Fastest flat change on a FOC ride gets a special prize at the end of the year. Current record seems to be about 40 minutes.

dwillen
2010-09-08 20:21:56

We really do go faster at the end of the ride.

I think it's partly Stef's explanation, and partly that as the group gets smaller we're more likely to make lights.

chrsjxn
2010-09-08 20:32:33

The fastest flat fix I think I've ever seen was on last Fall's urban forest ride. I forget who it was, there were only about a dozen of us (Caitlin might remember), but I swear it was 10 to 15 minutes. Fast, anyway. I can't do it in my own driveway in under 30, even on a front tire.

stuinmccandless
2010-09-08 21:02:50

Haha, i'm with Stu..I HATE fixing flats..I'll walk for a day or two, look at my bike...sighh..kick it..And walk another day..Guess that's why i got called out for "riding the incline when i own a road bike!" Hahaha, just not as 'serious' as some folk.

cpollack
2010-09-08 21:05:32

Okay, Chris holds the record for the longest flat change at 4 days. He wins the least serious award.

dwillen
2010-09-08 21:26:40

We'd go somewhat faster if we didn't hit Carson St.... just sayin'

noah-mustion
2010-09-08 22:32:32

TBH there were points in the last flock that were so slow you might have trouble staying upright.

Changing my "no" to a "maybe".

robjdlc
2010-09-09 00:28:29

I've been really bad at making it to rides that I RSVP for lately, but I should be there this Friday. I'll also be introducing my girlfriend to flocking for the first time...

hoffmannj
2010-09-09 00:36:25

I won somethinggg!

cpollack
2010-09-09 00:38:31

Sigh. Gonna have to miss out, friends. I'll catch the Flock in 2 weeks.

msprout
2010-09-09 01:11:33

I'm a firm maybe for this Friday.

reddan
2010-09-09 01:19:09

I gotta be honest.... I love biking down Carson. I know it's barely biking, but the reaction to the spectacle that is the flock makes this my favorite part.

smarti6
2010-09-09 01:21:35

I half love and half hate going down Carson. On one hand, Carson is a place that I, as a rule, avoid after 6 pm. On the other hand, what better way to travel down it than in a large spectacular group?

noah-mustion
2010-09-09 01:44:38

I like Carson with Flock. If I was alone I'd never go down there at that time of night.

dwillen
2010-09-09 02:07:43

Definitely helps to have certain elements (tall bike, ridiculous lighting) to throw the drunks off though... replaces hostility with curiosity

noah-mustion
2010-09-09 02:09:39

So is this week a Flock, or a Flock All Night?

swalfoort
2010-09-09 13:56:17

10PM Flock all night.

smarti6
2010-09-09 15:06:20

Man, if it didn't start about half an hour after my last Coherent Moment of The Day, I'd be in. My brain fires up at 4AM and shuts off at 9:30PM (if I'm lucky).

I could handle a Morning After Flock. Hair of the Cog?

ejwme
2010-09-09 15:11:40

Hair of the Cog would be a great follow-up to Midnight Mass, assuming breakfast was part of the agenda.

reddan
2010-09-09 15:33:57

Hair of the cog, breaky at Pamela's? Mmm... pancakes.

ejwme
2010-09-09 15:58:19

Could take the trail to Millvale and then dine at the P&G on Lincoln.....a Pamela's affiliate.

swalfoort
2010-09-09 16:43:00

how delicious, the trail to milvale and pancakes. Hair of the Cog indeed.

ejwme
2010-09-09 17:16:11

The Waffle Shop is open from 11pm to 3am on Friday... I could be persuaded to eat a waffle after the ride.

dwillen
2010-09-09 17:19:07

I can hit Millvale in 25-30 minutes. Sure!

stuinmccandless
2010-09-09 17:48:00

I have family coming into town this friday and can't! :( Miss everyone, but busy-bee-sy over here!

Stay thirsty my friends!,:D

bikeygirl
2010-09-09 17:59:28

Wait, what is this Hair of the Cog thing?!

cpollack
2010-09-09 21:34:09

I think it's a joke. Just come to the dinosaur at 10 pm. Bring your serious face.

dwillen
2010-09-09 21:43:24

Dude, I would totally do a 7AM ride. But Hair of the Cog does not exist.... yet. MUA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!!!

ejwme
2010-09-09 21:46:25

I would only be there at 7a if it required little sleep the night before and at least 90 miles on a tall bike.

ndromb
2010-09-09 22:17:01

I wanna flock with you.. all night

We're gonna flock the night away...

stefb
2010-09-10 16:57:07

I second a 7 am Flock ride and breakfast!

jeg
2010-09-10 18:56:59

Note: ejwme is having a jail trail plants meeting at the bike rental at 9:30

If you guys flock all night and then do the hair of the cog, you can do that next.

cburch
2010-09-10 20:20:37
