Premium Rush!

I've been waiting for years for someone to catch on to the new urban bike riding popularity and make a sweet action movie out of it. And it's here on 8/24! Everyone on IMDB forum is talkin' smack, but I think it's gonna be awesome! I just hope Kevin Bacon and Larry Fishburn get cameo roles!

Now that the messenger industry is dead, Hollywood can glamorize it. The old west was yesterday. War World II was earlier this morning.

It seems pretty realistic to me... :/

2012-08-10 06:33:07

It looks like a fun movie! Though I think if they used big, heavy basket bikes, it wouldn't look as cool.

Fast and the Furious, bicycle edition?

2012-08-10 11:24:59

That is what I was thinking haha

I think a group of us are going to ride to a theater to see it when it comes out.

stefb
2012-08-10 11:30:10

A ride to this would be awesome, who's coming. I say a ride to Southside.

"I ride my bike a quarter mile at a time."

+1 Ride to Southside. On a Monday for $5 movie ticket AND $5 burgers.

2012-08-10 11:58:22

Monday? We ride opening night

marvelousm3
2012-08-10 11:59:17

I try to stay away from the south side theater on a Monday night. Seems like more annoying people show up

Think of all the bad road manners it will promote! If ever I wished a film could be squeezed back into its can.

By the way, people hate bikes this movie will flop.

thelivingted
2012-08-10 12:20:10

Every movie promotes bad manners. Guns, fighting, profanity, road rage, and on and on. It's a movie. After I watched the Avengers I did try to take over the world.

marvelousm3
2012-08-10 12:31:55

Fast and the Furious movie premieres were always burnout-filled. Pretty entertaining to watch everyone get pulled over less than a block outside the theater. :)

make sure to replace your H2O bottles with cans of NO2.

2012-08-10 12:36:17

@Ted - while I agree that people who don't ride bike might hate bikes... people love that Joseph Gordon-Levitt dude and might see it just because he's in it.

But I do agree, impressionable people will ride like shitheads for a while after they see this movie... just hope they don't graduate to watching

there will also be the group of ppl that think they can just buy a fixie then do all these crazy parkour level stunts, without realizing the movie uses 8-10 different bikes specially rigged & built for certain actions.

and i totally agree with MM on the "movies inspire actions" thinking, I saw Devil Wears Prada then tried to be an ice-queen magazine editor it didnt work out, then i watched Big Trouble in Little China bought a semi-truck never but found a secret society underneath Chinatown.

The only time that it ever did work was when i watched Ferris Bueller's Day off and i successfully skipped school once (i didnt get to crash a parade though).

2012-08-10 14:46:52

I tried to time travel after I watched Back to the Future but it takes my Subaru over an hour to hit 88 miles an hour

marvelousm3
2012-08-10 15:44:11

@MM so you managed to travel an hour into the future.

still, its not as bad as the time my boss died when i was using his vacation house. dunno what i woulda done if i hadn't found all that string.

2012-08-10 16:21:41

After watching a movie with a Kenny Loggins soundtrack, I once tried to make a foray into the highly competitive world of championship arm wrestling. Sadly, my lack of a CDL prevented me from making it over the top.

Just as long as you remember to turn the hat around backwards.

2012-08-11 01:11:20

@benzo: Sorry but the people in your clips are kinda lame...

The gold standard is still Danny MacAskill e.g. in this (recut): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z19zFlPah-o

In particular check out the scene at 4:09. (Admittedly just an urban cyclist thing.)

On the whole, talent trumps bravado...

ahlir
2012-08-11 01:32:06

The crashes in the trailer (especially the one at the end) make me shudder. Why do people have to get demolished on their bikes for the film to have drama? Just my $00.02

2012-08-12 01:17:51

Interesting. Movies show people getting the crap beaten out of them, getting shot, crashing cars, they love it. People completely disconnect the real outcome that would result from these movie scenes.

As long as the crazy Hollywood bike messenger is the good guy, against all reality, I'll take it.

Also was just in a Sports Bar a little while ago and the commercial was in heavy rotation, so someone is trying to have it succeed.

edmonds59
2012-08-12 01:33:09

If they wanted it to succeed they should have released it last year. Someone claimed copyright infringement and its been in lawsuits for the better part of a year.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premium_Rush

But it does look like it'll be a fun lil popcorn romper.

2012-08-12 01:48:44

cool story, bro:

this movie was advertised last year

and then, my friend tumblr'd a picture of his sweet road rash and a picture of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's sweet filming road rash

and then, later, my friend got hit by a car

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT FOR JOSEPH GORDON LEVITT

~inception~

~real life is a movie~

I'll see it!

2012-08-13 20:24:15

I already bought a brakeless fixie to ride to this movie.

scott
2012-08-14 11:46:32

I heard you sold your helmet, too.

stefb
2012-08-14 11:57:00

The alleged copyright infringement was for a screenplay about a rollerblading messenger who's a hacker at night.

I want to see THAT movie... but doesn't that sound like the main character from the movie hackers?

benzo
2012-08-14 12:27:41

eh. The movie is likely going to be pretty awful. Nevertheless, I will gleefully fork over some cash to go see it, drink heavily beforehand (during?), and heckle the shit out of everything, Statler and Waldorf style.

All are welcome to join. Seriously.

2012-08-14 20:15:29

would it be ironic to watch this movie at a drive-in theater?

2012-08-15 02:30:28

not unless you bring lawn chairs @ take the whole spot.

Velo, talk about a throwback to pure awesome. That's how you rock a skool dance.

2012-08-15 03:15:22

I say let's try to get a huge group of people to go watch this movie. SS is the closest... :)

2012-08-16 20:22:07

opening night/right after the 23rd leaves us for the future/at midnight?

2012-08-17 15:07:46

I don't care about this movie.

I sure wish I could ride like Danny MacAskill. The man is basically a superhero.

2012-08-17 16:57:57

Ohhh sigh, Lori Loughlin. *swoon

Just curious though, everyone seems to throw Lucas Brunelle under the bus since Line of Sight came out..

Yet, everyone praises the movie Quicksilver. I'm not trying to start a brawl here, just curious how the two are different.

Kevin Bacon rides just like Lucas Brunelle does....just curious.

cpollack
2012-08-19 06:26:20

I am also aware that Quicksilver is a movie, not documentary/video.

But i've never once heard anyone say "Quicksilver gives cyclists a bad name!"

cpollack
2012-08-19 06:27:18

Quicksilver is too cheesy for anyone to say anything serious about it.

stefb
2012-08-19 09:07:36

So when and where are we seeing this for sure?

marvelousm3
2012-08-22 20:52:51

Since someone mentioned Line Of Sight, is it available anywhere to rent/borrow/watch (netflix, redbox, library, theater etc.), or do you just have to buy the thing from his site?

2012-08-22 21:21:10

OTB had it playing on Friday. It was on repeat all night.

2012-08-22 23:56:05

I might buy it.

2012-08-23 05:39:36

So we going to see this en mass?

sgtjonson
2012-08-24 14:53:15

I would like to see it, I ordered line of sight after seeing part of it at OTB on friday. I'm looking forward to seeing all of it. maybe I can organize a viewing for people. (I have access to a big room east pittsburgh, projector, and sound system)anyone else interested.

dbacklover
2012-08-24 16:10:21

Double feature with an intermission ride between the theater and "a big room?"

2012-08-24 17:23:25

I have a copy that i pre-ordered. If anyone wants to borrow it. It is worth buying in my opinion.

2012-08-24 18:50:50

My app says it is playing at 7:35pm on Monday night at south side works. Anyone in?

stefb
2012-08-24 18:55:14

im down.

but hopefully someone brings a microwave, $10 popcorn is a beast to burden.

2012-08-25 23:15:48

I am in. I will be leaving N.Side around 6.

2012-08-26 05:31:11

So is there still an intention to gather some peeps & yell @ the screen, or have ppl done thier own thing and already partaken in a viewing?

2012-08-26 22:12:19

Well yelling or talking during a movie is rude but we are trying to gather people Monday night.

stefb
2012-08-26 22:55:37

@stefb

Agree with the sentiment that yelling in this instance is not what I'm interested in doing. Joseph Gordon Levitt is a good actor and this movie has good reviews

Also, I seem to recall a large popcorn being around $6; we could share

sgtjonson
2012-08-26 23:27:52

I thought everyone got a free small popcorn along with the $5 ticket.

That is good to know. I think that the south side is more convenient for people though.

stefb
2012-08-27 02:32:55

If you can't go tonight, it looks like the major Taylors are going next week. Copied from an email:

Where: The Eliza Furnace Trail head Parking lot

When: 6:15pm, Monday 9/3 (Labor Day evening), the movie starts at 7:30pm.

Movie tickets are only $6 bucks!

stefb
2012-08-27 09:19:06

It dawned on me this a.m. that my kid has a bike fit at 5 p.m. today and that takes a while and then I have to drop him off in HP for a sleepover so I think the timing for tonight isn't going to work. :( Look forward to hearing about it.

sarah_q
2012-08-27 09:47:56

Who is down for some premium grub before the film?

2012-08-27 13:11:13

It's going to be raining tonight. :'(

2012-08-27 14:18:47

@ron, I'll be down at OTB. I think I am getting a pie tonight too!

ndromb
2012-08-27 19:03:18

I am going regardless of the rain. I will hit OTB for some grubbin'.

2012-08-27 19:12:01

And that's about that. You're looking for depth and profundity, this is the wrong movie. But under the direction of David Koepp ("Secret Window," the screenplays for "Mission: Impossible" and "Spider-Man"), this is an expert and spellbinding adventure. I'm very weary of routine chase movies. There's nothing routine about "Premium Rush." Any action formula can be brought to life with enough imagination and energy.

2012-08-27 22:17:20

Two thoughts (no spoilers):

1) what a craptastic villain, and

2) those are implants or it is somehow possible to be cold while sweating.

Cheesy movie. Worth the money.

stefb
2012-08-28 02:08:45

yup, agree, Michael Shannon is awesome,

And as long as you don't roll into the theater expecting the next Avatar, Godfather, or Schilndlers List you should enjoy the film.

(But it is closing in on Biodome 2: Electric Civilization Boogaloo)

2012-08-28 02:34:40

I was entertained. Fun movie.
