stick to talking about bikes. you only seem like a bit of an asshole then.

Quoting cburch, one of the wisest things I have read on this board in a long time. I used to read this board every morning (admittedly lurking), it was exciting to hear about rides, following along with tag-o-rama and wheel set of fortune, not to mention the camaraderie I felt just being a part of Bike PGH.

However, in the past 9 months or so, the direction of this board has changed. It seems that a few people who spend a lot more time here than I am willing to have taken the bossanova tag as a representation of some kind of authority on this board. All it means is you post a lot.

Admittedly there has been some questionable stuff posted, but until the mods think it is not up to their standard of usage, no one here has the right or ability to threaten the ban hammer, no matter what is posted.

we should all try to follow cburch's quote.

Does seem like there is a group of young kids trying to muscle up and feel they can ban people or tell people to "leave". They don't really contribute to cycling in Pittsburgh. It is more of a click kind of thing that kids do to fit in or belong. As many of us get older, that kind of thing becomes amusing and of course childish.

Nice post Mr. Eric. I do feel the subject matter should be more cycling related. Not how horrible we are for eating meat or whatever the latest craze is. What about cycling and safety? What are the improvements for us cycling in the city?

I remember posting about bikes stolen in East Liberty. Since then there has been lots of changes and it all backed my claims. The little click did the best they could to derail and tell me I was wrong there were no threats, but I really wanted cyclists that park a bike in E. Liberty to know they should lock them well. Probably shouldn't have bothered informing cyclists of the issues I was around and discussed with business owners All I got was grief.

"I had so many things to say in response to these two posts, but RF already said it all."

True. By that little picture is says, "I cannot understand and it is best to move on, since I would have nothing to add and my contribution would be meaningless."

Enjoy.

2012-08-09 01:52:19

This is fun. I've been saving all these gifs and thought I've never get to use them.

Also, your thread about bike theft being on the rise didn't seem to deliver the message of "Lock your bike properly," It seemed more like you were saying "East Liberty is full of thieves." More recent posts of yours certainly add to that sentiment.

rubberfactory
2012-08-09 01:53:03

well, if it's going to be that way:

1. please tell us what you are doing to contribute to cycling in pittsburgh. sounds like you're really making some fine contributions; no need to keep them a secret. tell us more.

2. if you're going to call us all kids, it seems fair to ask how old you are.

3. the message board is going to stray from cycling topics sometimes. lots of posters here are friends in real life. lots of posters here happen to have things in common other than an interest in bikes. sometimes conversations are going to stray. sorry, i guess?

4. you never really apologized for your blatantly, inarguably anti-semitic comments earlier today. if you're going to be that much of a racist, yeah, no one will care what else you say. (and i don't necessarily love it when veganism gets brought up out of nowhere either, but you were the one who brought up anti-semitism instead. that's not better.)

for the record, i was starting to warm up to you a little until the nasty comments earlier today. i thought people were being too harsh to some degree. but no, you have yet again gone out of your way to insult a large group of people who you don't know, while also being unapologetically racist, so... i guess they weren't being too harsh.

I do more for cycling in Pittsburgh in one day than you will do in a lifetime.

I defend the east end because I love the community.

I know you will never leave because you are nothing without us.

Seriously. What is your obsession with age. I'm betting youre not that much older than most people here and quite a bit younger than many. Get off your high horse you racist, mysoginistic, anti-Semitic jackass. You aren't some sort of cycling god anymore than anyone you keep attacking. Go troll somewhere else.

Getting close to 50, but not there yet. FWIW, I enjoy your posts and feel you contribute to cycling. Thanks.

2012-08-09 02:09:16

additionally, age has nothing to do with experience or street smarts or bike handling skills.

Mr. so-called Marvelous, you seem to really hate my truthful posts. Shall I post your post in a big string to show your contribution to this forum? You may not like the look of it. Don't be too high and mighty. You don't contribute anything of substance here. You know it and I know it. Shall I post your contributions?

2012-08-09 02:12:12

at 24, I feel like I may be one of the youngest 10 or so who post regularly, though I may be mistaken. I think that all age ranges are represented quite well here.

Mr. so-called Marvelous

ndromb
2012-08-09 02:13:11

They've already been pointed out to you. Don't play dumb.

And there was clearly more to that comment than just getting one Hazon confused with another — you tied in Madoff, Goldman, the phrase "Considering this is all a Jewish thing, I suspect they are somehow in cahoots with Giant Eagle," a reference to some stereotype that you hold (a new one for me) that Jews own all the grocery stores, a reference to "the mess that they leave," etc.

I mean really, this sentence: "They are jewish owned, like MOST all grocery stores, so there will no doubt be some financial gain somewhere." Are we seriously not past these stereotypes about Jews and money? Are you THAT old? (like, Old Testament old?)

2012-08-09 02:13:16

reddan
2012-08-09 02:16:33

"FYI- you are younger than quite a bit of people on this board. We are not all 20 years old."

Age is be a number, but maturity is something different. Anyone posting some little video response has no words for a response. They are just trying to get a laugh to sidestep substance. It is all good. I think why many hate me is I call a spade a spade and people's egos don't care for it.

Here is an idea. When I posted about bike theft and other cycling concerns, don't jump on me saying I am a racist and whatever. I am living on a bike and listen to what is going on. I wanted to convey to others that they should lock their bikes up well. What was my response? You are a racist, no one in East Liberty would steal a bike. Nice. Welcome.

2012-08-09 02:17:09

Speaking of sidesteps... what was that about you giving any real explanation or apology for your anti-Semitic comments, or recognizing that there's a difference between saying "bikes get stolen in the city" and making generalizations about the "East Liberty crowd"? Oh, right.

But anyway...

My bad, y'all. Nick is right.

ericf: I agree with your post.

If I were to judge this forum on the last few threads I've viewed here, this seems to be the pattern:

(1) Someone makes a point that might actually be legitimate in the first post

(2) hcurtis posts something that's somewhere between slightly offensive and utterly repugnant.

(3) a bunch of people then make follow-up posts pretending to be offended by hcurtis, but in reality just showing their own immaturity.

(4) Someone posts a gif video of marginal relevance.

Is this all the forum has to offer?

2012-08-09 02:40:04

jkp1187, i see your point (and as the youngest regular poster on this forum as far as i know, i'm willing to accept the charge of immaturity, although i actually am offended by hcurtis and am not just pretending). but in general what you said can also be summarized as "If I were to judge this forum on the last few threads I've viewed here, this seems to be the pattern: it's an internet forum." and in reality, compared to most internet forums, i think this one is pretty damn productive and useful. i have never seen a real question go unanswered or a real contribution go unacknowledged here (even if things got off-track somewhere in the middle), and i've met a lot of awesome people as a result of following this board. i can't say that about any other message board i've ever read or contributed to.

2012-08-09 02:47:37

because I was asked the name mr marvelous comes from a play on my initials that are mm. I was given the name mr marvelous when I was a youth group leader years ago. The youth gave me the name out of fun and it stuck all these years. It's not an ego thing just a fun play on my real name. Also working with youth has given me a great love for the city and the east end.

also, he's made offensive sweeping generalizations about "the east liberty crowd" in several threads, most recently this one:

http://bike-pgh.org/bbpress/topic/why-cant-everyone-be-trustworthy

And I will absolutely own up to being immature. It's part of who I am. I am immature when it's fun to be, but I like to think that I take things more important than a jerk on a message board seriously.

for the record, we haven't had to ban anyone yet (although the anti-semitic comment is bringing me really really close). they usually get bored and move on to some other messageboard when comments like that aren't taken care of. their posting record (and everyone's response) hopefully serves as an example of what not to do.

also for the record, 3 of BikePGH staff's last names are: Fineberg, Susman, and Boerer.

Keep in mind, my post was a mistake in name and my concern wars for cyclists being ripped off. I posted this later and found my mistake. The name is VERY close, you have to admit:

Sorry about my first post. I thought this Hazon was THIS Hazon.

The term veganism was coined in 1944, probably before hcurtist was born. Pythagoras made an argument for veganism in the 6th Century BCE. The idea shows up again in the early 1800's England.

Yeah, just talking, not competing. At some point I realized I was probably an outlier compared to the age range of the majority here, but not much of an outlier. We seem to cover a pretty wide range.

It came up because of the discussion of immaturity, but my age is probably not relevant anyway, because I am and will be immature at 23/53/103 (at least as far as my sense of humor and approach to internet discussion is concerned)

I am 12 years old, and what is this?

W Roger, were you at the track a fews weeks back for one of the Tuesday crit races with your dad? I thought I saw you but I wasn't sure if that was you or not. I've still got those pedals too but I can't open your PM because theres no message title.

w roger, you look sooo happy in that shot!

@quizbot: my niece thinks that she is a princess. I have no idea what to do when she wants to play Barbies. My natural instinct is to flee. I assume you are doing your duty and getting that kid on a bike, even if it is pink.

@w roger - so very glad to see you back on a bike. I am sure that crash would make some people quit. You have youth on your side. You heal more quickly. Keep riding!

I have realized that I am more than twice as old as w roger, but I have been told numerous times that I have the sense of humor of a 14 year old boy. I credit Beavis and Butt-head for that one. 3 years ago in a line outside of a venue waiting to see a band play, a 14 year old girl called me an old lady. *facepalm*

@wr that is an artistically interesting photo. The blinds & shadow make a interesting frame for your face. Of course, an animated GIF would be even better.

So far I am the oldest, at 55. I was showing one of my sons the animated GIFs last night and got mocked. Oh, Dad, you just discovered animated GIFs. How sweet.

I'm 58 years old and new to riding in an urban environment. Every time I've ridden with an experienced rider or group of riders from BIKE PGH I learn new tips and begin to break old bad habits.

@quizbot: 5-yo female commentary would be welcome here: bring it! :-)

Seriously, it would be cool to hear what little kids are thinking abut their bikes & riding.

@bootsuv

Yeah that was me and my dad! It's completely no problem though. If there would be any time in the future you could give me the pedals it'd be appreciated.

P.S.

Thanks everyone! I just wish the weather would lighten up a little so I can ride!

W Roger now that we have matching sunglasses and helmet I hope to ride with you on Tuesday sometime soon

@WR - congrats - welcome back!

@quizbot - the 5-year-old perspective would bump both the maturity and intellectual quotients up a few notches...

Pseudacris, that wasn't directly responding to you, I was just posting more gifs.

Oh, I totally missed this in my overeagerness to add more gifs.

I got a job. :( Or I've been lazy/making excuses for myself. :)

I'll bike commute to work someday, and I'll have no excuses to drop down for a ride @ 6:15.

"So far I am the oldest, at 55" Sorry, Mr. Webb- gotcha by 5 years. Ah, to be 55 again!

My friend Rachel recently learned how to make animated gifs of herself. She's incredible at it:

W Roger, you gonna be out at any more of the Crit races? I should be racing at the next two and can bring them if you'll be there.

It is Hugh Laurie. Not sure of the source, though.

at first i was worried about seeing hugh laurie in what appeared to be an action role. then the gun fell apart and it made sense.

his role in house still freaks me out.
