Another Cyclist Struck - Hill District

Last night a 16 year old female was struck while riding her bicycle in the hill district. The driver stopped. She was transported to the hospital in critical condition, which was updated to stable this morning.

what exactly is the difference between "critical" and "stable"

my understanding is it's basically the same diagnosis, but stable has a better prognosis. that is to say, the chances of their situation worsening without prompt action are significantly less than if the person was in critical condition.

From Wiki:

Typically, stable is not a condition on its own; it is usually qualified with a true condition. It is commonly used to denote conditions where a patient has a favorable prognosis or stable vital signs. The American Hospital Association has advised doctors to not use the word "stable" either as a condition or in conjunction with another condition, especially one that is critical, because a critical condition inherently implies unpredictability and the instability of vital signs.

My intuition? "Critical" means "she might die." Stable means she will be around the hospital for some time and the extent of eventual recovery is not yet certain.

When I witnessed an accident, the declaration that one of those involved was critical meant the police came after me to ask me a whole lot more questions about what I saw, after previously sending me on my way.
