Blessing of the Bikes - April 30, 2011

As discussed here previously, I'm organizing a ceremony of the Blessing of the Bikes, inspired largely by a similar event in New York City. It will be held on Saturday morning, April 30, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Squirrel Hill, on Forbes Avenue near Murray Avenue.

My goal is to make this an inclusive event that people of any religious background would enjoy and appreciate.

Weather permitting, we take a ride through Schenley Park after the blessing.

Here's the Facebook event, with the relevant information from the page pasted below:

Saturday, April 30 · 10:00am - 11:30am

Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 5700 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15217

More Info

Inspired by the Blessing of the Bikes at New York City's Cathedral of St. John the Divine, this first-ever Pittsburgh Blessing of the Bikes will start off the riding season with a short service, including sprinkling (asperging) of holy water over cyclists and their bicycles and a commemoration of those killed while riding.

All ages and all faiths welcome! Riders of other non-motorized vehicles should come out for the blessing as well--scooters, skateboards, etc.

I'm going to NYC for the 5boros tour on May 1st so I might have to try to make the NYC blessing.

so how does this work exactly? If I have more than one bike, do I need to bring them all, or does a single rider blessing carry over through contact with the bicycle?

I may have to show up at this as I live less than 100 meters from there.

the nice thing about sky cake is that you can make up your own rules about how it works.
