Duck Hollow 3 rivers heritage trail

PROBLEM SOLUTION QUESTION DATE 3/7/14 Saturday March !st 12pm noon (P) There is a Thick mat of Dead leaves on the bike trail. Between Duck hollow Trail Head Access and Glenwood Bridge Train Tracks (S) I need 2 or 3 Volunteers with rakes to help me clean the trail. I have a Honda 420 Rancher All Terrain Vehicle and would like to drive slowly with 2 people on back rack with rakes strapped on going slow with Orange safety vest . I guess a couple passes woud do wonders . (Q) is there someone on this board to help me get permission to do this ? I would like to do it with the Tail council blessing if possible Date Saturday March 1st at 12pm Noon

I'm the Friends of the Riverfront's trail steward for the Duck Hollow Trail. I'll relay your request to the FOR's Stewardship Coordinator, Jeffrey MacCauley, and we'll see what he says. Once a year or so, Pittsburgh Public Works has made a pass along the Duck Hollow Trail cutting knotweed, which is that trail's biggest problem. I have made requests to Public Works to take a mechanical sweeper to clean the trail but I believe it has never happened. That trail has many years of accumulated leaves, twigs, knotweed stalks, and other plant debris on it. I agree that this trail needs a cleaning.

metal leaf rakes and a few people on foot are the best solution to clean off the surface. unless the matted leaves are so think you need a gravel rake. then thats the best solution. driving over what you want to sweep off the trail is going to mat it more and strapping rakes to the back of the vehicle wont give them the leverage they need. fyi we have to do this to much of the single track around here every spring.

the mat is thick and wet , by hand would be best but we are talking over a mile of trail. i was thinking two on the back with a leg hooked pushing down on rake would work .

How about pitchforks? How about metal, thick-toothed rakes? I might be able to scrounge up one of each. The implement I cannot help with is myself. I'm tied up on Saturday.

gravel rakes and macleods by hand are your best bet. if i don't go skiing in the highlands i can bring a few tools. a mile isn't that hard to clear off with 5-10 people on a crew.

i am the proud leader of my 1st clean up Here are my thoughts . if we can do this with a small group think what we can do with a Bike Pgh Army ? perhaps set up a volunteer mailing list and find and post problems that can be tackled and then ride off in to the sunset LOL wouldn't it be cool to see a bunch of rakes straped to bikes . also on another note I posted notes at the trailhead to see if any walkers ect ... can get there. Thanks again for any and ALL HELP !!!!
