"Bicycler"

I like this word and will be using it more and more. Just letting you know. You can now go about your business.

Personally, I'm a heterocycler, but what ever floats your boat...

No, no, of course not!...not that there's anything wrong with that...

I like the word too, but it sounds too mainstream.

How about "bycïclër?"

I identify most closely with "Polyamorcyclist".

I used to only ride trails but now I prefer the streets... does that make me a trans-cyclist?

I road-bike now, and want to mountain bike as well, but I haven't bought a mountain bike yet. I guess that makes me a pre-shop trans-cyclist.

Tabby nailed it. That's what made me post the thread.

Bicyclist does seem a bit presumptuous.

dmtroyer

is there something wrong with cyclist? it would include unicycles too I think. Bicycler just doesn't roll of the tongue. The only reason the word bicycle rolls off the tongue is because of Freddy Mercury's catchy vocalizations.

I prefer Bike Driver.

There was a fair amount of discussion at a recent BikePGH meeting about how "cyclist" doesn't really include everyone who rides a bike as it tends to be bicycle enthusiasts that identify as such. Many people who ride do not consider themselves cyclists, and more casual bicycle users are many times the people that are most in need of proper infrastructure for a safe ride. "Bicycler," while not a term I'm personally jumping up and down to start using, includes everyone who rides.

I own a car and am a driver, but I'm not a driving enthusiast, you know? I can't think of a similar term to "cyclist" for the analogy, but I think what I'm trying to say is clear enough.

We could go the bureaucratic route and start calling us like the law does: pedacyclists.

@Brad: I think the term you're looking for is "gearhead". I know that includes bikes, but that's what I've heard used.

2 Tag-O-Rama clues:

1. When I left the tag from edmonds59's Egyptian building, I turned on MapMyRide for the next 11.22 miles

2. On the post here

I remember someone on here making the Carlin-esque observation of the ridiculousness of the fact that someone who passively sits in a car is driving it while someone who actively propels a bicycle is riding it.

noah-mustion

i think that dates back to horses and wagons. you ride on top of a horse but drive a team of them when hitched to a wagon. cars took over for wagons and the term stuck around.

Eleanor, one can shorten it to "cycler." It's not that I am going to solely use this word, but Brad is correct - only a very small percentage of people consider themselves "cyclists" and an infinitesimal number of people ride unicycles and only a portion of them would feel offended by the use of the term "bicycler"

scott

I like cycler better than bicycler for mouth feel, though work jargon lends it an unpleasant connotation.

I guess most people consider themselves "drivers" not "motorists", so the "I ride a bike but I'm not a cyclist" technically does make sense.

Silly 'cyclists' sullying my transportation with their competition!

if one can "pilot" a river boat (Mark Twain was one, back when he was Samuel Clemens), why couldn't one "pilot" a bike? I like it.

My son pilots his tag-along. He thinks its a star fighter, complete with laser sounds. Sometimes a podracer. Every white stripe or painted arrow we roll over is a "power-up."

Maybe I should wean him off the Wii Lego/Star Wars game...

I'm not sure which word fits me best but based on what I hear screamed at me from passing cars I think I'm a "Lance Armstrong".
