PghMurals.com

As you've probably seen repeatedly, SRPIT and I have been riding our bikes to murals all over the area. We've documented and researched over 360 artworks in 2012 and 2013 so far and put them online in a google-maps mashup with photos and background stories, links to the artists, etc. PghMurals.com We'd like to acknowledge and truly thank everybody who suggested murals and helped us locate them over the last year. We could not have found so many without the help of you folks on this message board. Please check it out, leave any feedback here, or in the comments on the site, or in an email to pghmurals@gmail.com The entire time that the BikePgh web forums was going through the new format introduction I kept saying, man when we roll out the murals website that's going to be us on the receiving end of, Hey I'm using Netscape 27 on my Commodore 1024 and it's a little bit fuzzy on my 4G but we really would appreciate any guidance and feedback you'd care to give us. Our goal is to encourage people to ride their bikes around Pittsburgh by giving them a list of destinations and some information so they could plan an afternoon's outing, on a Google map that shows the bike trails and bike-friendly routes. thanks.

If you gave us information and you don't see the mural on the site, we might not have gotten there yet. We just finally made it to one that Edmonds58 told us about months ago. There's one in Etna for example, that Stu told us about, but we wanted to combine that ride with another destination this spring so we've postponed going there. Hopefully we'll get it in the next month. We're still working on this project and will continue to add murals as we get to them or find them. I'd like to reiterate the thank you VB sent out above. We really appreciated all the help. Please let us know if you find any new murals. We'd also be interested to hear if anyone actually uses the site to plan a ride.

Man, what a great idea and execution. Even though I see murals all over the place when walking/biking/driving around, it's really impressive to see the sheer number of them scattered on the map. Do other cities have this many murals and I just haven't noticed, or are we just really cool? Also, one small suggestion on site usability: when you click on another mural marker it automatically closes the current one and switches, but if you just click with the hand on the map, it doesn't close the window. Might be nice to be able to close the window this way in addition to clicking the regular "x" close button.

is there a way to comment on a paticular mural. it would be interesting to hear stories from people about their trip to see this mural or that mural, or stories behind a paticular mural. I was living a block from the one the east pittsburgh when it went up and some of the people had their noses out of joint when it went up. Edit nevermind I figured it out.

Love this! I work at The Midwife Center and I just posted this to our Facebook because we have "Celestial Weaving Girl" on the side of our building.

@WillB, Philadelphia has a mural arts program which is pretty famous. But the Pittsburgh area seems to be doing quite well. Edit http://muralarts.org/ Also there's a couple of books: Philadelphia Murals and the Stories They Tell [Hardcover] Jane Golden (Author), Robin Rice (Author), Monica Yant Kinney (Author), David Graham (Photographer), Jack Ramsdale (Photographer) More Philadelphia Murals and the Stories They Tell [Hardcover] Jane Golden (Author), Robin Rice (Author), David Graham (Author), Jack Ramsdale (Author), Natalie Pompilio (Author) Maybe someday there'll be a book about Pittsburgh's murals.

We received a request from someone in Johnstown for location information on a mural of Forbes Field. He said it was inside a small bar in Oakland and covered the wall from floor to ceiling, but he couldn't remember the name or location of the bar. Wondering if anyone on the board knows where this is? Thanks.

There was a mural of Forbes Field inside the old Fort Pitt Hotel on 5th ave that is now a parking lot so SOL on that one; And there used to be an "old neighborhood" mural inside Dennys Bar on Louisa Street which is now called Gene's Place, but I don't know if the mural is still there or not - I think Reagan was in office the last time I was in there.

This is really incredible work. I'm going to start plotting routes for myself zigzagging a bit off normal A to B type routing to see more of these.

I've contributed a few to the project mainly through my using a plethora of methods to get from A to B. Change up how you get places and look for new things. Like the day I saw someone painting a design on the side of a building at 2227 NCharles St.

This reminds me that yesterday I noticed that the Shephard Fairey mural on Double Wide Grill in Southside was painted over. Not sure when this happened but I was disappointed.

Thanks, @rgrasmus. I've changed it to "ghost" status. Appreciate the info. @jonawebb, looks like an interesting Google project. Sounds like they have a few reservations about the idea. Thanks for the link!
