caitlin

the bikes are built by republic bikes. just to clarify!

No drops? I was so close to becoming a hipster, dammit.

i stated this somewhere else but doesn't hurt to do it again: you know what would be awesome? if they sent along a little brochure/booklet on bicycle safety basics, or gave you a helmet along with the purchase. to help reiterate that being informed is part of bein' cool.

i'm sure it's just wishful thinking but it's important wishful thinking at least.

I'm all for it. I want to see everyone on a bike and buying through a clothing store only makes it easier.

scott, bikePGH should partner with urban outfitters to do what argylepile just said. hehe!

i'm glad they come with brakes

i kind of hope these bikes get really hip and then go out of style so there will be all kinds of brightly colored parts scattered all over the usedbikeosphere...

it would be nice if they sold helmets too... it really blows my mind that anyone would be willing to sell bikes sans helmets... should always be an option

A helmet should be part of the bike building process on the nifty little widget. That would be a really cool move on UO's part.

When I first skimmed this subject, I got the impression they would sell Argyle color-patterned bikes.

Alas!

It turns out that like so much of the world, they simply are not hip enough for me.

if they sold argyle patterned bikes i would be on top of that.

i guess i could always make a bike look argyle by cutting up old socks though

caitlin
2009-07-16 17:24:19

i will custom make argyle sleeves to fit anyones bike for a small fee

Many bikes already come with a booklet telling you some traffic basics, and not to ride at night without lights and other such stuff. They could be improved though. Cars don't come with driving manuals, stoves don't come with cookbooks.

Helmets... that's a hell of an added cost to a bike for a helmet the consumer may not want. People are making bike decisions based on $25 here and there, adding the price of a very personal helmet to the bike price would likely price the bikes out of their immediate competition.

As for coming with brakes, there are very very few fixed wheel bikes shipping without them these days. Besides full on track racing bikes, most all of them have brakes in the box... Whether the shop installs them or the consumer removes them immediately is another story.

What is scary to me is that someone who may or may not be new to cycling in a city like Pittsburgh is buying a fixed gear bike! I flopped the wheel around on my singlespeed and almost bit it within two pedal strokes! Ha ha.

The booklets that I've seen include some useful instruction, but also such gems as:

"don't ride at night" -- period, no mention of lights

"ride as far to the right as possible" -- instead of the more nuanced "practicable" wording, and a little explanation of what that means.

I think this is actually good news, overall. I see what is happening with bikes as akin to a form of gentrification. The hipster phase is just about ending (Buying your hipness at a shopping mall is lame), so now it's time for the yuppies to move in.

Just wait until Cuisinart comes out with a line of blenderbikes.

This has to be one of the signs of the fixed gear apocalypse.

you can build an argyle Madone

Yes, but does it come with brakes?

reddan

yes!

With cable housing in a truly awesome colourway, no less.

I tried to paint my bike argyle, but I couldn't find a spray can that would make pointy little diamonds. So it's kind of more like polka-dot. I'm not happy with it.

But I've got this can of Black Watch...

Maybe some Bike PGH maps could find their way to the counter at the Urban Outfitters in the Southside Works?? Not much, but an easy start.

All the more reasons Port Authority needs to start installing more bike lanes and lockups.

Lyle: I've seen spraypaint argyle before. I'd guess the secret is probably painter's tape.

alankhg

so do you get the hoodie to match the bike, or the bike to match the hoodie?

erok
2009-07-18 14:42:57

Maybe the problem is they can't find any argyle-patterned helmets.

i wonder which retailer will be next.

erok
2009-07-21 13:35:47

Hot Topic can sell fixes with blades and spikes.
