1A today: What needs to change to make roads safer for cyclists?

Today's "1A" (for first amendment / free speech) program by NPR is about making roads safer for cyclists.  It will be broadcast on 90.5 WESA 10-12am, possibly followed by a partial rebroadcast 9-10pm in "1A Plus."

My favorite line was a caller making the statement “right of way means nothing when you’re the squishy one.”

Audio is available here https://the1a.org/shows/2019-08-26/inaction-in-the-past-is-making-new-york-cyclists-less-safe-in-the-present and is also available as a podcast, e.g. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/1a/id1188724250?i=1000447858191 It was a good discussion. They covered many of the big issues:
  • all road users break the law at comparable rates (drivers, cyclists, pedestrians)
  • speeding cars kill, so slowing cars helps
  • SUVs are deadlier than sedans, because of the high front end
  • smartphone use means more distracted drivers (a statistic they cited: cameras in cars show that 13% of drivers are distracted (not watching the road) when passing cyclists)
  • protected bike lanes help
