1A today: What needs to change to make roads safer for cyclists?
Today's "1A" (for first amendment / free speech) program by NPR is about making roads safer for cyclists. It will be broadcast on 90.5 WESA 10-12am, possibly followed by a partial rebroadcast 9-10pm in "1A Plus."

My favorite line was a caller making the statement “right of way means nothing when you’re the squishy one.”
all road users break the law at comparable rates (drivers, cyclists, pedestrians)
speeding cars kill, so slowing cars helps
SUVs are deadlier than sedans, because of the high front end
smartphone use means more distracted drivers (a statistic they cited: cameras in cars show that 13% of drivers are distracted (not watching the road) when passing cyclists)
