So sorry to hear your bikes were stolen from your porch.Did you have them locked??? My bike was stripped a couple weeks ago in Shadyside and I felt violated?? Your incident is even worse with 2 bikes stolen.I sympathize with you and hope your bikes are recovered.
2 Bikes Stolen
Woke up this morning to find our bikes stolen from out porch. We live in Greenfield, but who knows where they may have ended up. No pics, but here are short descriptions:
1) Specialized 17" Mt. Bike. Silver. Most defining features are a rack on the back and the hybrid-ish tires which have nubs like mt. tires on the side but are smooth in the middle.
2) Giant Boulder SE Mt. Bike, Maroon, Gray and Black.
If anyone has seen then, I'd appreciate any tips!
Nope, we were dummies and didn't have them locked. Not really a good place to lock them to on the porch, though...anyone have any creative solutions for that? Has anyone tried installing or heard of any artistic/decorative things that could function as bike racks?
I used to have a Rubbermaid tote filled with concrete with a U lock embedded in it. Not really artistic or decorative, but it worked.
do you have a basement? If not, you might want to consider taking it inside your apt/house if the steps are navigable...there are some decent sturdy wall racks that you can get.
As I'm thinking about it, it seems like if someone had a welder (and some talent), they could construct a very interesting and attractive piece out of some scrap metal that could function as a bike rack. Anyone know anyone who'd be interested in such a project?
I happen to have a welder... I only have experience in automotive metal fab (structural bracing/suspension/exhaust), but let me know what you have in mind.
i just put a new porch on my house and this is what i did for locking up outside
That's real cool. Plus they are under the deck and mostly out of the elements.
Erok, that is just a fabulous idea. It changes the whole equation! Instead of "Of course I need a three-car garage, I have three cars", you replaced it with "Why would I need space to store three cars? I have a four-vehicle garage right under my porch!"
A picture is worth a thousand words.
I have some bike racks I built I could give you one cheap. I make em out of huffies.
@erok surprised you don't have a fleet of 3 rivers racks under there.
Thats a great use for huffys.. bike racks.
@erok: That is sweet.
I don't have an area under my porch like that, but I was thinking about something similar on my porch. My porch has a single to get onto it and a concrete floor, so I was thinking a basic metal U shape that would fasten into the concrete somehow. Although I'm not really sure about how to do the concrete fastening, either...
hammer drill and concrete anchors. You could try to get a 3 rivers rack on your porch, that would be awesome.
Even locking them up to each other makes them harder to steal.
I like the ubolt in a rubbermade tote/tub of concrete concept.
