Where would one find this "BikeFest Calendar?"
22 August 2009 - Iron City Populaire
I know this'll be on the BikeFest calendar, but just to get the word out....
Thanks to Jim Logan and reddan, the BikeFest populaire lives on in my absence. This year, however, it'll be a proper randonneuring event, with actual brevet cards and controles. If you think that sounds too official, it really isn't--the idea is to have fun.
We're still working the kinks out of the route, but it looks like it'll head north via Little Deer Creek Road, through Deer Lakes Park, to Sun Mine Road and points north. After almost hitting the Butler Airport, the route will head toward Valencia and return to the city via North Park.
Start and finish location will be the Oval on Washington Blvd. Registration begins at 7:15 AM, with a rider meeting at 7:50 AM. The ride will begin at 8:00 AM. Cost is $5, all of which will be donated to Bike Pittsburgh.
More details will be posted here and on the WPW radonneuring page.
Jim Logan has generated a map and cue sheet for the populaire on 22 August.
Info, in case you've forgotten:
Details: Start/Finish Location: Washington Blvd Cycling Oval;
Registration begins: 7:15 AM; Rider meeting: 7:50 AM;
Ride start: 8:00 AM; Ride is free, $5 voluntary donation to BikePGH to support BikeFest is encouraged.
Also, Jim is looking for three controle volunteers (i.e. stamping brevet cards). If you're interested in helping out, please let me know.

Thanks to all the riders and to the Wheelmen for the donation to Bike Pittsburgh. Hope yinz enjoyed the ride.
(Not to brag, but my husband and son got the best time in the tandem division.)
How many folks showed up?
Also, big thanks to Jim Logan and the WPW for putting this on in my absence.
About 30 people showed up. It was a good route once we got to the turn off of Freeport Rd. Sun Mine Rd is a sweet challenge. Very nice roads in Butler County. I appreciate those who put it together - especially the set up in North Park. I also highly appreciated the guy who gave me a ride of to a bike shop in Butler after I got a cut on my tire. He drove me about 10 miles to the store and then back after the repair was made. Thanks to him I was able to enjoy the whole ride and make the cut offs.P.S. There was only one tandem, but it had really nice handlebars.
djr -- now your story makes sense -- when you passed us on Mount Royal I couldn't understand why you would be there then, I thought everyone was well past by that point.
Routing. I just want to point out that North Park and Mount Royal are on the same side of the Pine Creek valley. Which means that you can plan a ride which turns L onto Sample, and falls in and climbs out of the valley TWICE. Or one that turns R on Sample and AVOIDS THAT VALLEY ENTIRELY. Tandems will notice that little detail.
I'll make another post about handlebars, have to find my camera first.
Nate, do you honestly expect us to _avoid_ hills?
