Hello Seth,
any details? V.
24 Hour DC to Pgh Relay this weekend
We're looking for a strong rider or two to join us on a 24 hour cycling relay from DC to Pgh this weekend. The first team leaves at 2pm on Friday and returns to Pgh at 9pm on Saturday. The second leaves at 2pm on Saturday and is back in the 'burgh by 8am on Sunday. It's a hell of a challenge and you'll need serious lights if you want to be on the second team. Email me at seth@ventureoutdoors.org if you're interested. It's a great time and a good challenge.
Seth
V,
We ride segments of the trail with a van meeting us every 20 miles or so for support. At that support stop we put fresh riders on and then leapfrog to the next spot, where you would ride again. Riders usually ride about 4 or 5 legs for a total of around 80 miles. The first team rides in the daylight and the second team rides at night. We ride in any weather. It's a ride in the fourth year and it's a small fund raiser for Venture Outdoors.
You don't need to raise funds. All we need are a few riders that are used to riding on trails and are in good shape. If you're interested feel free to shoot me an email at seth@ventureoutdoors.org or call me at 412-606-9318.
This was a lot of fun for Pgh250, but I can't do this weekend, sorry!
There is a 15 mph speed limit on at least some of the 335 miles of trail. I bleive all of the 180 miles C&O.
The second team averages over 18 mph, so it is unlikely that they can remain within the law and meet their goals.

The C&O Canal towpath, although level, is unpaved and rugged in many areas, where it is riddled with roots and rocks. Speeds are limited to 15 mph on the trail, which is open during daylight hours.
EDITED: It looks like I misunderstood what was going on. I thought the 2nd team was riding the whole trial in 18 hours or so. Now I'm guessing it is just one leg of the trail.
I don't care much about someone bravingthe dangers of riding at night. I was really worked up at the idea of a group blasting down the trail past other users at a fast speed.
Sorry.
No enforcement.
Don't worry, this ride is a legitimate and sanctioned ride. We've
been holding it for 4 years with permits and insurance. We've even
used the event to raise funds to finish the trail into Pittsburgh.
I agree that it's unsafe when cyclists travel at high speeds on the
trail. The great part about the distance is that it can be covered in
22 hours and 40 minutes by traveling at 15mph. I instruct my riders to
ride no faster. Our number one priority is safety. In fact, I can tell
you from personal experience that it's quite difficult to maintain
15mph as we're chugging up the hill out of Cumberland.
Thanks again for you concern for the trail. It's an amazing asset.
