5/26: Riders wanted - ride your bike in the Lawrenceville Memorial Day Parade!

We've been invited to have a small group of people riding bicycles participate in this year's Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 26th! Come represent the bicycling community in Pittsburgh and honor our veterans. Just bring yourself and your bike. Feel free to decorate your bike if you'd like! Please respond to this thread if you are able to participate. Info: Meet at 9am in the Rite Aid parking lot at the intersection of 40th St. and Butler St. Bike Pittsburgh will be in Section 53, Group 5.

So far we have a few people confirmed but could still use some more to make it a bikey parade! Can you come out for Memorial Day morning? 9am-11am.

Tentative yes, dependent on the "honey-do" list.

Just a side note regarding the OP, it's Memorial Day, not Veteran's Day. We honor the fallen, not those who have served. Of course, those who have served will be playing a pivotal role in the memorial services, and appreciate the support.

Drewbacca, thanks for the correction! For those of you who can be there, just look for the other bikes or ask an organizer where to go. Hope you can make it!

So.... There's barely anyone in here... come on down! Is anyone from BikePgh staff supposed to be here too?

Hope there was a decent showing? Better to be in a parade than to watch one! I'm two hours away spending the day with family, so it seemed kind of silly to drive in just to be in a parade. Otherwise, I would have been there.

Yeah we were 7 people. It was confusing to say the least since we all assumed that someone from BikePgh was gonna be there to help figure things out, but after we figured out no one was coming, we asked around and got a handle of things. Next time it would be helpful to know if someone will be present at an event or not, instead of finding out at the last minute -from the wording on this post, it sounded like someone (Becca) was going to be there. OTHER than that, it was a good time to be part of the event and see the Lawrenceville community out & about. Many people cheered at us saying "Go Cyclists", which I though was cool.

Another of the 7 checking in. I was also a little disappointed--like bikeygirl mentions, I had the strong impression there would be at least someone from BikePGH there. I was about the fourth rider to arrive, but there was no coordination between us, since none of us knew each other...but since there were no other riders around, it was eventually somewhat easier to find the others. The parade itself was also somewhat disappointing. We were assigned a spot fairly late in the parade, between the beauty queens and motorcyclists, but as soon as we pulled out, we were told we could just ride freely up the line. I think this could've worked if we had had some sort of uniform or banner or something to tie us together, but as it was I'm afraid we just looked like a half-dozen random assholes who'd crashed the parade, especially since we ended up square in the middle of the Animal Rescue League contingent by the time we hit the cemetery gates... We did have the county fairly well represented, though: in addition to Mikhail from the South Hills, we had riders from Shaler and Springdale....I think I was the only one there who actually lives in Lawrenceville.

I've been out of town and am just now catching up on posts. I'm sorry that there wasn't a staff person to coordinate the bikes at the parade, and that I could not make it. I should have been clearer in my post. We were told that there would be someone at the parade to coordinate all of the people riding bikes and that you would be riding in a designated section, so I was under the impression that it would be simple for all of you arriving. In the future I will make a point of being more specific about who will be coordinating and if a staff member will be attending. Thanks to those of you who were able to attend! It was great to have all of you there to represent our bicycling community!
