Oh geez.............I think your Portland would look bad ass with them, or is this for your soon-to-be carbon speed demon???
aerospoke Wheels.
I love the look of Aerospoke Wheels, I found a bike in Shadyside chained up with them on. Anyone know anything about them, are they any good?
My only comment about this bike: slamthatseatpost.com
These would be for my single speed.
In my limited experience: heavy, solid, aero speed advantages won't kick in until you hit high teens/low twenties, and they'll probably dice any squirrel that dares jump into your spokes.
Well my speed max is 5mph, I have had squirrels in my spokes.
What? You didn't like the feedback you got on the facebooks? I'll say the same thing here, get a nice set of carbon track rims laced to some nice hubs instead. These things are built like shit and ridden for [negative] style points only.
Ok cburch you win, any suggestions on a fairly decent set that won't kill my wallet. I was hoping for once you weren't right.... but as usual
Start saving your pennies. A nice wheel set will run you $600-$1000. Totally worth it though. One of the most important upgrades to any bike.
Yeah the wheels I have are crap. Cheep plastic. I'm saving planning on buying soon.
I could tell a difference when Colin let me use his nice wheels on my road bike then took them back.
Sigh.... I just want a fast set of wheels
^pedal harder!
and faster!
I still think they are cool
^^ ha!
I won't be worried until he looses the spandex and grows a handlebar mustache.
i think they look cool too... they remind me of the bmx mag wheels i lusted after when i was 9. i have anecdotal evidence that they are strong but heavy, though that should be taken with a grain of salt.
My back hurts just looking at this. I think i follow whoever this person is on Instagram, unless there are two people riding Cinelli Histograms in Pittsburgh, which i doubt. How do you get any speed sitting on your top tube?!?
*Not a histogram, but my back still hurts.
Aerospokes are like the dubs of the cycling world.
Man I don't think I could ride on a $1,000 set of wheels, not on these streets. I'd be sick to my stomach worrying the entire time.
"fixation" is on Netflix now...
Well now I would feel silly if I got these.
They look really clunky/heavy to me and remind me of my old Skyway mags on some GT's I had when I was younger. They are probably very light but they just seem that way. I like the overall look of the bike though.
I really want, not sure why, a set of Mad Fiber wheels. Don't know if they are good, doesn't matter though, they look cool.
Aerospokes - crappy fake aero wheels that were
about to go out of business and some
messengers started using theam cause they are
super easy to lock through. Suddenly they
are crazy hip and coudlnt keep up with
production. They are like mags of the 80's
provide no benefits other than looking cool
as that bike above shows.
@Steevo, love it! Enough reason to hate them.
*still riding on Shimano RS10's. Started at 240# and down to 185#, still can't destroy these cheap ass wheels. I lust for better wheels but better is relative as these "garbage" wheels still roll.
Are the really that bad? Are they heavier than a set of Velocity B43 or Deep V? Do you mean crappy as in the fall apart and wont stay true?
You can't really true them, have the stiffness of a wet noodle, and are probably nearly double the weight of your current wheelset (I think ~2400g/set?).
I give up should have just listened to cburch from the beginning.
I want to see the guy who's riding that bike
I bet it is a woman or a short guy
@mr marv - i built a set of wheels last summer with velocity deep v rims, tiagra hubs, and dt swiss double butted spokes for about $200. i love them. they're probably not the lightest things in the world, but that doesn't matter much to me. they handle pittsburgh streets quite well.
I have been saving for that frame set for sometime now it is rather beautiful.
Regardless of the wheel quality opinions, this build was a pretty big investment for a fixie and it is a shame that it is not even close to being sized properly for the rider.
I am just happy that the fork is left uncut and hopefully it remains that way.
If anyone knows the owner,if the specs are right I would offer a fair price.
Mr marv, when I met colin, his old road bike weighed about 15lbs, and it wasn't carbon. He sold off most of the nice parts to buy downhill bikes.
Actually the current trend of having a foot of seatpost showing just looks like a too small frame to me, but I'm old school. Kind of on board with Grant Peterson on that, oddly.
I am not really into the skyscraper seat post trend either, but in my opinion a 2000 dollar bike should have the fit and finish of a artistic masterpiece and ride like one too.
Unless this bike was won at a raffle or something there is a few more low cost details missed than just the seat post height leading me to believe that buyers remorse will kick in well before the credit card payment will go away.
But then again, this thread is about wheels and getting back on topic I like the idea of aerospoke's but for $600.00 there are many better options.
@mm
Buy this ones
um... they are like $2,000 a pice.
Those would be rough on a windy day, no?
yes
I know a guy who banged up his leg pretty badly, chasing his wind-blown $3600 disk wheel across part of Death Valley during a poorly executed tire change.
There are a set of Zipp 303's on CL...not my thing but since Mikhail offered up pics of Zipp's.
@reddan: you just made me nostalgic for tumbleweed
I saw those wheels on CL, I think I might get Ksyriums or have some built. I am not cool enough for wheels in bags.
I just didn't understand how to ride them in the bags...
if you do the internet thing, keeping an eye on chainlove can probably score you some decent wheels for a fairly meager price.
+1 chain love.
orionz: If you go with Ksyriums, don't get the Ksyrium SLs, get the Elites w/ the normal steel spokes. The SLs ride pretty harsh, and the fat spokes make them terrible in crosswinds. They suck worse than my 58mm deep Flashpoints.
Elites were what I was looking at.
Zipp 202 tubulars will be my next wheels.
Elites are pretty much bomb proof. I've been riding them for 5 yrs or so, never needed more than a slight truing, and I occasionally blindly nail holes. Original rear had to be replaced due to sidewalls wearing too thin from braking over 10k mi. All 3 purchased on ebay slightly used. A++ would purchase again.
Good to know, they seemed like a solid set of wheels that got only positive reviews. Wanted to get down in weight a bit before doing anything but these stock wheels are still good... Might make them training wheels over winter.
quizbot, how much used?
Honestly, at $675 retail, I wouldn't even consider them. At $300, eh, maybe. $200 sure. When I had them, I had the infamous Mavic freehub howl that required a freehub rebuild. They looked cool though.
I started building my own wheels, jumped on the latest trend of wide rims. BikeHubStore.com rims, hubs, and CX-Rays puts me around $350 and 1462g. I could do a lighter build with KinLin XR200s and get around 1280g, but I'm not that much of a weight weenie. Instead, I'm an aero weenie...
I think I see a new thread coming on...
First set was 400 several years ago, rear was 250 when I picked it up last year.
FYI Ksyrium Equipes are on Chainlove right now, 40% off ($269).
...
and now gone.
Saw a gorgeous Cinelli Mash Histogram today on some Deep-V's. Ugh, I want it. Anyone know if Iron City stocks these? They are the only dealer in the area listed on Cinelli's website but I cant recall ever seeing them in stock.
I mean, they definitely stock Cinellis. Bob showed me some while I was bike shopping. I don't know if they stock that particular bike, but I bet they can order whatever you want from Cinelli.
Interesting. GF will shoot me if I buy another bike this year so I'm not looking for anything now, but its good to know. Not that I need an $1800 fixed gear anyways.
@ rice rocket FYI Pro Bikes can get Kinlin rims and Sapim spokes.
