There really aren't trails in Highland Park, but you can do a nice road loop around the reservoir and the swimming pool. There isn't a dedicated bike lane, except around the reservoir, but the roads are mostly pretty quiet.

Any advice?
Hi all -
I'm going to try a new area this weekend and I'm thinking either Highland Park or the trail that starts in North Park and travels through Hampton Township Park. Any advice for either trail? Anyone know any other trails around that part of the city that are good for riding?

FWIW, the lane around the reservoir isn't a dedicated bike lane either -- there are always pedestrians in it. But the traffic is quite light, so other than the weirdness of having to frequently merge right into the faster traffic instead of left, it's not bad. You don't actually go anywhere, so it gets dull, but if you're looking for someplace to pound out a regular effort with less than one stop sign per mile, it's great.

Okay, good to know. What about any other good routes that far up the river and along 28?
I just moved and haven't found any good riding areas yet!

I don't know if "lane around the reservoir" means the reservoir walkway, or the lane on the road that goes around it---but I know that last year when I first arrived in Pgh, I got so frustrated with the stop signs that I used to bike on the walkways around the reservoir. Again, you have to look out for pedestrians, but for me it was a nice way to blow off steam after a week of law school classes on a flat, continuous track.

Another route that's not flat but goes thru Highland Park is to take Mellon St. north to the zoo, go up the big hill, and come down onto Lake Dr. (the road around the pool) and then loop around onto Stanton. It's good exercise, and once you conquer the hill, it's pretty flat.
I don't know if there are any good routes along the river up around here...I usually go down thru Panther Hollow to the Furnace Trail-to-Hot Metal Bridge-to-South Side trail.

Heh, I've learned to live with them, having come from the Land of Flatness (Central Ohio). Haven't learned to love 'em yet, but if I get a chance to trade up to a different bike, I might get to that point.
One thing's for sure--when you get over a big one (or series of them) they definitely make you appreciate a nice stretch of flat road.
