August 19th Flock Ride
Anyone coming to the Flock Ride on friday, its my birthday that day so what a better way to celebrate than with my Flock friends.
*rotates 8-ball*
"signs point to yes"
kinda depends on the route. but I will say that i really want to.
I'm planning to. I haven't made it to a flock ride probably since last August. woo
come hell or high water, yes.
Unless I have to work late on Friday, I'm planning on coming.
I finally don't have to work before dawn the next morning! Meaning I can hang out at the party for longer than 5 minutes.
The route will be posted tonight.
Get excited, we've got new shirts!
cost for shirts? post pic? I'll break my "second hand only" rule for a Flock T.
I may make it to this one.
Just a teaser photo for the moment:
They will be on sale for $10 each, starting at the ride on friday.
As long as it isn't raining I will be there pulling along my twins. I know I've said this before, but I actually mean it this time. Plus now that I work downtown, it's a lot easier for me.
The shirts look awesome.
Route: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/46685824
Return route: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/46686598
Alt return route: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/42614778
Being a first timer, can someone explain the purpose of the alt return route? Do people take one or the other depending on where they live? For example, Mile 3 on the return route is pretty close to home for me, so I would most likely split off there.
Also, I feel a little bit silly about how excited I am for this ride. I just hope my outta shape tuckus can keep up.
We post return routes so people unfamiliar with how to get home from the destination have a better idea on how to get home. They are routed to Oakland mostly because the people who generally need help are often students or people who drove in an parked in Oakland.
From Penn Brew, people will be leaving at their leisure. If you are uncomfortable riding home alone, there are always people going your way, but the ride ends at the Brewery and does not actually return (as a group) to Oakland.
and don't worry about keeping up. flock speeds range from slow to "are you sure we're moving?" the few times i have gone i have had trouble not ditching the group accidentally.
lol, yes that's the speed exactly. I kept accidentally ditching the group we were riding with from the movie last night which was going at Flock speed. I have an easier time staying with Flock since the group kind of bunches up. I think of it more as a mobile conversation than a bike ride.
Thanks, all. I'll try to find someone to ride back with.
I'm not planning on leaving right away I'm going to eat and hang out, but if anyone is uncomfortable riding back they can stick with me and Mrs. Marvelous we ride at a little faster than a Flock pace.
hubby and I are planning a "kayak shuttle" of sorts with our cars, due to some question of ride duration potentially exceeding saddle comfort levels, so I may be available to bike back with someone (I prefer alt. route but am flexible), or we may be able to give someone + their bike a ride back in a car (or a combination of both). Can confirm plan/possibilities at start of the ride or before via PM.
I'm headed back via trail to Millvale (& then up Babcock), unless one beer does me in too much & then I'm only traveling the three blocks over to East St to get a bus home.
In any event, I'll help anyone figure out how to get home by bus. (Nearly) Every bus has a rack now. (I know of 3 in 700 that don't.)
So I got my mojo up this morning, rode in to work, coming to Flock. Got clearance from the fam to be out tonight. Feel good.
Yesterday was my b'day, so I had a nice dinner at Mallorca with a High Ranking City Official. Got to dinner on my Raleigh folder, so I showed HRCO the folder, talked up biking.
So far first day of my new age going very well.
Right now I have a ring-side seat for this lightning storm! This is awesome. Makes all that "movie magic" seem like, pfft, whatev.
Hope everybody's in.
Happy belated edmonds!
Thx!
I'll be pulling a trailer full of tshirts, $10 each for anyone interested!
Cant wait for the ride tonight, got my bike all locked up in town waiting for this work day to end (early) Then off to run some errands, visit the Mom and then to oakland.
Very excited to make another ride.
P.s. Happy Bday Edmonds.
hmm, seems there are many birthdays- mr marv, ian and bikeygirl too, I think. Who's bringing cake?
Weather + daughters being "sneezy and defiant" in daycare = another cancel for me.
It's raining.
I get defiant when I'm sneezy too. I think it's supposed to clear up by 6:30, so I'm still planning on making it.
It's going to clear up and be beautiful.
Tonights ride has been pushed back to 7 to account for the weather and traffic going on. See everyone at Dippy at 7!
my husband is irked that he's watching "them send boats to rescue people on washington blvd - there are people in life jackets" and I won't "call people about the ride tonight."
muahahahahaha - only if the water is above the seat, at which point it's time for a swim. or lightning. But weather.com shows the radar clearing up ~6-6:30, and clear all night.
I think a bike-swim could be fun.
There should be plenty of imagery for the news casts tonight; PAT bus caught around downed power line, guy trapped in car around water and downed power line, three inflatables sent out to rescue people
This is just an example of how disconnected from reality driving makes you, you drift along in your illusion of safety until it rains, and, Whoa! Surprise! I need to be rescued. Damn waterfromthesky, get offa the road!
The road by the basketball courts down in the Run was waist deep. Seriously.
It's pretty clear now...I'll swing over to Dippy and pass the word about 7.
@jeg: No problemo! Just scurry up the stone path and cross the tracks. (Or vise-versa depending on your direction.) Actually, this is pretty impressive...
[added: is that guy standing there up to his waist in water a biker? I can't see the bike.]
@ Jeg were you the guy that warned me about the flooding and pointed out the people trapped in their cars.
Mrs. Marvelous and I missed the Flock we got trapped in-between flooded streets and couldn't get to Oakland in time.
Ahlir: Yeah, I went over the tracks, but this was too awesome not to stop and take a picture. That guy was indeed carrying his bike through it.
This was well before flock -- I had planned to go but ended up not going because I'd already been caught in two electrical storms today, and I had some work to get done tonight.
Amazing. Didn't storm in the North Hills at all, no sign of anything amiss until I got across the Bloomfield Bridge. Bigelow had a lane-wide lake, then I saw branches down along Bellefield, then I got to Dippy and saw the pond on the street. Wow.
@Tabby -nope! My birthday is next month
BTW, awesome flock ride tonight! I loved to see all the new people, plus obviously all the seasoned flockers
Hope everyone made it home safe afterwards! It was a wonderful evening to ride indeed!
I'm so upset I missed it.
Great ride, Great Fun, and I gots me a snazzy new flock shirt. I just loved going out with everyone! you all have to be sure to make the september ride. ending at OTB with free beer and food. Wanna get 200 people At least.
Fantastic ride, I am now completely mentally rebooted. I now go to spray the poo water off by bike.
@stu you didn't have ANY rain???? that is incredible the radar was lit up for 100 miles like a christmas tree.
I did get some hail & tweeted about it. A couple of close lightning strikes. Maybe 30 seconds of strong rain, not even enough to get a stream going on the street. I sat on the porch and ate a late lunch while working on some paperwork.
In Cranberry earlier in the afternoon it was super nasty. I was stuck in my fabric covered box, so I didn't get to see if it was flooded, by by the time it was Quit'n' Time, it was just "meh, Pittsburgh" weather. Turns out a minivan with people in it didn't make it out of Washington Blvd geyser flood. http://www.wpxi.com/weather/28919071/detail.html Really sad.
... aside from scary flooding, Hubby (and I) had tons of fun and he wants to come out again "Kayak Shuttle" worked so well that's now our staple way of both getting to the ride on time.
My first Flock did not disappoint. It was a blast! I just wish I had been able to talk to more people. I'm already looking forward to the next one.
Thanks to Fridays ride, my Brooks saddle skipped about a years worth of break-in. It now fits my ass like a glove. A glove that's shaped like an ass.
I was kind of worried about riding on it totally soaked, but it seems to have come through wonderfully.
rzod,
glad you enjoyed the ride. hope to see you on the next.
