Bike as Minivan?

My husband and I recently sold our second car so my bike just became my new minivan. I'm courious if there are any other families in the area who are doing the same. I'd love to hear your experiences! We moved to a town north of Pittsburgh about a year ago and since it's so walkable/rideable here, we don't really need a second car. I'm currently using my husband's diamondback mountain bike with a double burley trailer.  It worked fabulously a year ago but my 3 and 5 year olds are getting too big. Together they weigh at least 100lbs and I'm frequently stuffing the "trunk" with groceries so we are definitely over the weight limit. I'm considering getting a cargo bike such as the surly big dummy or the yuba  elmundo but I don't have a cycling background so I know next to nothing about purchasing a bike. Does anyone have experience hauling kids and stuff on these bikes? Is there somewhere I can check them out in person? I basically need to haul 2-3 kids + groceries for short distances in all weather conditions, year round. Thanks!

I'm mainly a commuter but have used a trailer on the bike for grocery shopping trips a couple times. For me it wasn't a pleasant experience, as the terrain in my area is not bike friendly. But as to the method, I'd say if you can hook up a trailer without much work, and are geared low enough to handle a 100# load on a hill, you're in good shape. And disc brakes. The only other advice I can give is to add a couple of blinkies and an orange flag or triangle to the trailer for visibility, and a tube for the trailer to your repair kit.
